ECHO & THE BUNNYMEN IN CONCERT:

Formed in the late-'70s wake of punk's first wave, Echo & the Bunnymen forged a unique fusion of post-punk, new wave, and neo-psychedelia that established them as pioneers of a new direction in British rock. Today the band's moody, sophisticated sound is as compelling as ever, and their spellbinding live shows are the perfect place to experience it in the flesh. Whether brooding frontman Ian McCulloch is belting out classics from seminal 1984 album Ocean Rain or performing new material from 2014's Meteorites, Echo & the Bunnymen never fail to mesmerize with muscular musicianship and intense performances on their unforgettable tours.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Echo & the Bunnymen formed in Liverpool in 1978, taking their name from a list of nonsensical monikers suggested by a friend. The band made their debut in 1979 with "The Pictures on My Wall", released on the now-legendary Mute Records imprint. Their 1980 album debut Crocodiles was a critical and commercial success, cracking the UK Top 20 and setting the stage for the success of sophomore album Heaven Up Here, which reached the Top 10 in 1981. Their chart run continued in 1983 with third album Porcupine, the vessel for hit singles "The Back of Love" and "The Cutter" and predecessor to the band's landmark 1984 album Ocean Rain, widely considered by critics as the pinnacle of their '80s output. After taking a hiatus between 1993-1996 the band reformed with a vengeance, scoring another Top 10 hit with "Nothing Lasts Forever" and delivering a powerful series of performances on tour. With their 12th studio album Meteorites hitting shelves in 2104, Echo & the Bunnymen have fans eagerly awaiting their next live shows. Previously, Echo & the Bunnymen has sold out venues to capacity, like The Fillmore (Minneapolis) and Fox Theater (Oakland).

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"Amazing show. Ian's voice has not changed a bit. The band sounds the same as the first time I heard them. Bravo!"

"The Bunnymen did amazing renditions of their albums. The improvisation on Crocodiles brought back many great live memories of Bunnymen past shows."

"It was an amazing show. The band sounded incredible and Ian was very much a dynamic presence. Two complete albums were played, along with encores, so it was definitely a show to remember."

Echo & The Bunnymen, Not a bad show just to predictable, no interaction with the fans, every thing on schedule, you even knew if they had an oncore it would be Sugar Kisses, Boring, I would'nt recommend this show to a friend.

Show was a incrediable...The sound quality was the best. Highly recommend the venue. The staff was curitous and they really let you enjoy the show with too many rules. It's rock and roll... The intermition was a little lengthy between sets due to the orchastra.

  • Boring Concert

by Anonymous on 10/25/09NOKIA Theatre LA LIVE - Los AngelesRating: 2 out of 5

In the early 2000’s, we saw them at the KROQ 80’s Flash Back concert at the Glenn Helen Pavilion in California USA and at that concert they played for the fans. I will never forget that concert. They were awesome. Unfortunately this concert was not up to par from a fans’ point of view. Though they played ½ of their hit’s, they played them with some type of disdain while they gave their energy to the more artsy songs which seemed obscured and several I had not heard of in years. Then the band took a 1/2 hour intermission in the middle of the concert. That really brought everyone around us down. All in all, if I had to do this again I would have saved my money by staying home turning off the lights and playing their greatest hits from my iPod. Reason for this comment has to do with the stage being dark for most of the concert. Real artsy stuff. You couldn’t even see the band. At least this way I could have controlled the songs being played and would not have had to pay $10 a beer or $25 for parking.

when people pay an average of $100 a ticket, they like to SEE the band perform......at first I thought there may have been a technical glitch, but they played in the DARK the entire time with a minimal amount of blue back lighting.....you could not really SEE the musicians albeit their silhouette.....if I just wanted to LISTEN to music I could have stayed home, quite honestly, with the price of concert tickets these days. Love the band, they sounded great, but still..... we felt gypped....

Last saw in 2005, where Ians voice was terrible. Not this time.opened up with orchestra playing ocean rain album.just like on the album,1-thru-9. Took a 15 minute break, and came out with a strong 1 hour set, with all the classics.(or most of them) Glad they played........back of love sad they didnt play.........with a hip Band sounded great.Nice to see a great 80's band still play and sound great after (at least) 20 years.

The show was ok. They didn't sound great. The video screens with the walk down memory lane were distracting. and there was no encore, but that was partly the crowds fault. it was great seeing them again though, and it is still one of the best albums produced in the 80's.

  • EATB's Nokia show

by turokjr on 10/25/09NOKIA Theatre LA LIVE - Los AngelesRating: 4 out of 5

It was a great show. Only one thing bugged me there was not enough light on them. It would've been great to see their faces. But the music was and is always great. Echo & the Bunnymen are the best... better than U2

  • echo was hiding

by bigdaddyoh on 10/25/09NOKIA Theatre LA LIVE - Los AngelesRating: 1 out of 5

although they sounded great, when i attend a show i hope to be able to WATCH the band perform. this was not the case for this concert as they chose to remain in the dark for the entire first half. it wasn't as if the lighting was bad, in fact, it was quite intricately lit and i have to assume intentional that the band remained backlit and therefore unviewable from beyond the first few rows. and the screens were filled with their images from decades ago, so maybe they don't like what they look like today or have really bad skin or extreme sensitivity to light. we left at halftime out of frustration.

  • Echo and the Bunnymen Great HORRID lighting

by Telstar on 10/25/09NOKIA Theatre LA LIVE - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

No frontal lighting of the band. Could not see them really. All lighting was BEHIND them. The lighting guy needs to be fired. Nokia has two big screens, but no video feed from the stage...LAME. Despite this Echo and the Bunnymen were a 10/10. Ian McCulloch's voice was amazing. Great variety of songs! Excellent sound.

  • The Nokia Theater SUCKS

by RomanDad on 10/25/09NOKIA Theatre LA LIVE - Los AngelesRating: 1 out of 5

The band gave a lackluster performance, but I am a longtime fan so that would have been overcome by the "Its just great to see them in concert for the first time" factor. Some other people were grumbling that Ian seemed to be is a bad mood.... I think it was just that he wore sunglasses and a heavy overcoat (an "I'm off to join the Russian Navy after the show and they want me in Uniform" coat)... Nobody moved around much (To be fair, The rhythm guitarist did a few Bolero moves that would get rave reviews from Bruno Tonioli should he ever decide to go on Dancing with the Stars).... But it COULD have been a good show except for one thing.... The real problem was the Nokia Theater staff. I see below we can upload photos of the event.... That's not likely to happen... The theater staff damn near TACKLED anybody who tried to take a photo with a camera phone.... Their aggressiveness was the most astonishing thing Ive ever seen at a concert venue.... I can only imagine I would have had just as good a time watching a great movie in County Jail..... I would love to know if this is an Echo & the Bunnymen policy (in which case I never need to try to see them again because the experience wont get any better) or if this is a Nokia Theater problem (Where I will NEVER see another show).

  • Ocean Rain and more

    by Misa55 on 10/23/09Fox Theater - Oakland - OaklandRating: 5 out of 5

I'd been wanting to see these guys again since my first time in 1985 at L.A.'s Greek Theater (when I was barely 15 years old) so for me it was a dream come true. MAGICAL!! I'm still all emotional today...

  • Echo Was Devastatingly Good

by Higheight on 10/23/09Fox Theater - Oakland - OaklandRating: 5 out of 5

Here is the deal: they play their seminar album Ocean Rain straight through with a 12-piece orchestra, the come back for two encores where they play some of their greatest hits and some stuff from the upcoming album. Now, Ocean Rain is one of my favorite albums of all time, so I had high expectations. They shattered those expectations with a performance that was incredible. Ian McCulloch's voice is still as good as when I first heard them 25 years ago. Hard to believe but true. Don't expect a lot of dancing or theatrics, because that just isn't what they do. But the light show is atmospheric and captivating, and the music is better than you can possible imagine. Highly recommended. Go see it.

  • Echo & the Bunnymen Fox Oakland 10/22/09

by oldebfan on 10/23/09Fox Theater - Oakland - OaklandRating: 4 out of 5

Two shows in one. Ocean Rain complete for the first half which was textbook and a little stiff, but if you wanted to hear Ocean Rain that's what you heard. Second half, a mix of hits and new stuff. Great show, the band has come along way and overcome tradgedy. The new album is one of their better albums.

  • Echo was lusterless

by ValerieCompo on 10/23/09Fox Theater - Oakland - OaklandRating: 2 out of 5

She wants revenge opened right away and had a small 40 minute set. The shame was that the fans of Echo seemed totally unacquainted with She Wants Revenge so the audience energy was lifeless. It was a shame because She Wants Revenge has some really cool songs. Echo's singer rasped his way haltingly through the first half of the set, relying on the orchestra to mask his bad singing. Then he cranked it up a notch during the second half. Too bad he resorted to shouting obscenities to the crowd. Seemed like he was not having too much of a good time.

  • Ian still has it!

by Plantaddicted on 10/23/09Fox Theater - Oakland - OaklandRating: 4 out of 5

It's obviously that the band has worked really hard to pull off Ocean Rain and they do. The orchestra is great and clearly having a good time. The guitarist has lost none of minimalistic talent but of course, eyes are on Ian....who was dressed in what looked like winter coat, almost covering his bottom and with a collar turned up so it was VERY difficult to really see what he looked like. Add to that sunglasses and moody lighting and he was absolutely teasing us about not being able to see him. Retaining a sexy image apparently important. His voice held up really well 3/4 of the way through. He sort of lost it a few songs into the second set, which was a best of Echo fest with obvious adoration from both the drunken louts in the audience and I think folks like me who remember seeing them 'in the day'. Ocean Rain was beautiful. Moving, poetic and well done live. Very full rich sound Ian is that same old Liverpool ruffian he always was..he talked alot..hard for most folks to understand but clearly he was feeling chatty....

  • Echo and the Bunnymen are as good as ever!!!

by Binskers on 10/23/09Fox Theater - Oakland - OaklandRating: 5 out of 5

I've been a fan for 18 years and saw them all through the 80s and 90s and the 2000's. Last night's show was probably the BEST I've ever seen! They were in top form and played a lot of very old (Crocodile and Ocean Rain) songs. I was so happy to be able to see this show. I flew all the way from Seattle to Oakland just for it and it was sure worth it!!!
