ECHO & THE BUNNYMEN IN CONCERT:

Formed in the late-'70s wake of punk's first wave, Echo & the Bunnymen forged a unique fusion of post-punk, new wave, and neo-psychedelia that established them as pioneers of a new direction in British rock. Today the band's moody, sophisticated sound is as compelling as ever, and their spellbinding live shows are the perfect place to experience it in the flesh. Whether brooding frontman Ian McCulloch is belting out classics from seminal 1984 album Ocean Rain or performing new material from 2014's Meteorites, Echo & the Bunnymen never fail to mesmerize with muscular musicianship and intense performances on their unforgettable tours.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Echo & the Bunnymen formed in Liverpool in 1978, taking their name from a list of nonsensical monikers suggested by a friend. The band made their debut in 1979 with "The Pictures on My Wall", released on the now-legendary Mute Records imprint. Their 1980 album debut Crocodiles was a critical and commercial success, cracking the UK Top 20 and setting the stage for the success of sophomore album Heaven Up Here, which reached the Top 10 in 1981. Their chart run continued in 1983 with third album Porcupine, the vessel for hit singles "The Back of Love" and "The Cutter" and predecessor to the band's landmark 1984 album Ocean Rain, widely considered by critics as the pinnacle of their '80s output. After taking a hiatus between 1993-1996 the band reformed with a vengeance, scoring another Top 10 hit with "Nothing Lasts Forever" and delivering a powerful series of performances on tour. With their 12th studio album Meteorites hitting shelves in 2104, Echo & the Bunnymen have fans eagerly awaiting their next live shows. Previously, Echo & the Bunnymen has sold out venues to capacity, like The Fillmore (Minneapolis) and Fox Theater (Oakland).

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"Amazing show. Ian's voice has not changed a bit. The band sounds the same as the first time I heard them. Bravo!"

"The Bunnymen did amazing renditions of their albums. The improvisation on Crocodiles brought back many great live memories of Bunnymen past shows."

"It was an amazing show. The band sounded incredible and Ian was very much a dynamic presence. Two complete albums were played, along with encores, so it was definitely a show to remember."

  • Echo & the Bunnymen Old School rocked the House

by Donimo on 4/23/10House of Blues Cleveland - ClevelandRating: 4 out of 5

Awsome to see such an set of older songs. Ian and Will the last album The Fountain has some great moments you could have done a couple more off it. Never sit where you can see the setlist. The second encore did not happen and man that would have capped my night off with the song that turned me onto the band way back when. I was very satisfied even without Do It Clean.....Get to see this band if you get the chance.

  • Bunnymen could have been better

by collegerocker on 4/23/10House of Blues Cleveland - ClevelandRating: 3 out of 5

I saw these guys back in 1987 while I was in college and they rocked. Even had Ray Manzarak of the Doors come out on stage for two songs. Ian's voice was amazing and the show was a highlight of my college career. Now my expectations for the band almost 25 years later was not that high and Ian's voice was still pretty good. You got highlights of his former glory and overall he sounded good considering he's over 50 now. The sound, however, was a little to distorted. I like shows loud but there is a difference between loud and clear and loud and distorted. Unfortunately, this one sounded a little distorted. Ian also seemed lost during the show and had to have the drummer remind him what the next song was on several occasions. They also skipped Stormy Weather off the set list, which is one of their better newer songs.

  • Shoulda' Been Better

by LBLoneStar on 4/23/10House of Blues Cleveland - ClevelandRating: 3 out of 5

Was really excited to see these guys for the 1st time. Was disappointed in the somehwat ballady-slow pace of the bulk of the show. They need to build a show around Porcupine & emphasize more of the up tempo & psychadellic songs. Breaking the Back of Love & The Cutter were the two best songs of the show, but throwing in Roadhouse Blues & Walk on the Wild Side was a nice touch. Musicianship & vocals were spot on, just not the best song selection to keep the energy flowing.

  • Echo was awesome

Echo & the Bunnymen continue to prove how fantastic they are. They mixed some old and new tunes flawlessly.

  • Echo!

by Iamonemore on 4/22/10The Fillmore - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

I saw them last year/same venue and thought them absolutely amazing. What could be better? This year... with the new album and their timeless catalogue of prior mesmerizing music, they were... even better. It was truly fantastic. E&BM (Ian and Will, etc.), have continued with new material that remains way ahead of others. (me = good taste or something...? picked musical artists to listen to from the beginning that have proven themselves timeless with seemingly never-ending creativity) Really nice [for me]... I don't have to feel all creepy going to a "resort-type concert and/or Vegas" to see reunion bands, that are still singing that same song that was way over-played -- back then (too). Like everyone got stuck or something... Ewe, nucky thought! Thank you guys... ...and, (sometimes grumpy -- always amazing) Lou would be smiling to have heard your cover, and the honor or your (absolutely truthful) reflection of America's best... Hope he did (hear it). Lou Baby! Come back soon and often... PS -- as always, the Fillmore is an institution in and of itself.

  • Should've stayed home and darned socks instead

by SupaKah on 4/21/10The Fillmore - San FranciscoRating: 1 out of 5

The first half of the show was good but as the night progressed and singer Ian got more intoxicated, he would start and stop in the middle of songs, slur his words where no one could make out what he was saying, he would go on long ten minute bouts of jabber no one could decipher. For the price of the tickets I was quite disapointed and judging from the boos in the audience, I was clearly not the only one. Don't think I would have gone if the ticket was free. Nothing wrong with partying but when fans pay so much for tickets to support an arrogant drunk, I think the artist owes it to the fans to deliver.

  • amazing show

by fluffygirlrocks on 4/20/10The Fillmore - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

i was expecting the show to be average assuming they're older than they were in the 80's. but echo & the bunnymen were current, energetic, upbeat and amazing! you would've thought it was 1985! the fillmore is a spectacular venue for shows! it's historic and magical! the perfect place for all kinds of rock! hell for all kinds of shows!

  • The Bunnymen brought the house down!

by UKGazza on 4/20/10The Fillmore - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

What a fantastic night, front row at the Fillmore. I first saw Echo & the Bunnymen 28 years ago in London. Ian is a bit more talkative these days! Absolutely fantastic concert.

  • by Anonymous on 4/20/10The Fillmore - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

The fillmore is one of the best places to see a show. Ian and Will put on a great show it was classic Echo and the Bunny knock knock jokes, rolling in and out of other songs and some political rants

  • Bunnymen in fine form

by AlexWT on 4/20/10The Fillmore - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

Ian, Will & the band were in fine form playing classics, rarely heard, and one (only one?) new song. It was a very loose Monday night with lots of knock knock jokes some rarely heard early songs and three attempts at playing their classic hit The Cutter (third time was a charm) - thought they might give up on it but a fine ending to a great show.

  • ECho was magical and amazing.

The whole set was amazing and Ian was quite the character.

  • Echo and the B-Men

    by SassyGrl55 on 4/20/10The Fillmore - San FranciscoRating: 1 out of 5

Seeing bands 20+ years after their heyday is often a bit dodgy. It's pretty easy to tell if they're genuinely happy to be back together on stage, or if they're just doing it 'cuz the bank is calling. I'm always excited to see them either way, and try to enjoy it whatever the scenario. Echo and the B-men were one of my fave bands in the 80's. Lovely, lush poetry set to sublime orchestral music. This show had none of that. Empty and shallow. You know it's bad when the person next to you is checking their FB page (and I mean checking, not posting) in the middle of the show.

  • Echo and the Bunnymen

    by Galaxie500 on 4/20/10The Fillmore - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

I saw Echo and the Bunnymen at Luis La Bamba Club in Portland i think when Heaven Up Here Came out. At the Time I thought "What a KILLER Show!" How does a Band get that much better in 28 Years or so??? Echo and the Bunnymen at The Filmore was so Frickin' Good last night. The Encore set was way more than just the usual quick renditions of one or two songs... I always thought they were one of the Top B Level Tech/Psych Bands but they are truly A List... It would be nice to be able to Post a Video but the Video Gestapo caught me for a second time and made me erase everything I had... Cheers, Galxaie 500 - KFJC

  • Echo still rocks

by Shnikens on 4/20/10The Fillmore - San FranciscoRating: 4 out of 5

Good show last night. Ian and the boys are not the most animated band to watch up on stage but they still rock with a sound that is both powerful and elegiac. Ian did a nice job building rapport with the audience who appreciated his efforts even though it was difficult to understand what he was saying.

  • Classic - relevant

    by johnv24nyc on 4/20/10The Fillmore - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

Wow, I was there for the first time around in the 80s. I stay in touch with music, often going to see new artist. This was clearly high quality performance. The sound, performance, interaction with audience, even sense of humor was on point! Excellent venue, cool employees, quality sound system (did I already say that). THANKS, great time.

  • No Question, Bunneymen "Best Band Ever"

by Echoman on 11/11/09NOKIA Theatre LA LIVE - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

Why isn't this band getting more air play? I mean their three albums from this decade are, in my opinion, the best stuff this century. They are still knocking out unbelievable melodies. Ian's solo ablum Slideling is as attractive as any solo gigs the beatles members ever did. If you listen to this music, you will definitely be hooked. I can't tell you how many times a day I find myself belting out (in my head mind you) "I really really want you" from the Song "Love in Veins" Album Slideling 2003 McCulloch Solo - Anyway, It amazes me the trash that passes for music these days and it is refreshing that The Bunneymen are not only still making music, but the best music of the century so far...Hands down. They hit on every musical sensor in my head and it's all just perfect... Speaking of perfect,.. The gig, at the Nokia Theater on Sat. Oct, 24th, was nothing short of perfect. I salute their profresionalism. I mean they are true professionals working hard at their craft that seems to elude most music lovers. From the beginning you could tell they were on the nut with "Silver" as they proceeded with the entire "Ocean Rain album" in the same order as the record. Simply effortless was the whole live album show all the way through the Best Song Ever" The title cut "Ocean Rain" They took a short break and removed the orchestra from the stage. When they returned they went right for the throat with "Resue" They went on to play a very nice set of ther older stuff as well as the more current "Stormy Weather" - Finally the encore was the perfect ending to a very great show with a favorite of loyalists "Nothing Ever Lasts Forever" and finally "Lips Like Sugar" the song you did not want to end. However, sadly enough, it did. .. - Echoman A review of the Echo and the Bunnymen Concert at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles on Sat. 10/24/09 by Echoman

  • Echo & The Bunnymen

by Motorican on 10/29/09NOKIA Theatre LA LIVE - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

I loved the slide show presentation on the big screens in black and white pictures of the band throughout the years. Very nostalgic and also very well presented. The orchestra at the first half added such a classic touch to an already classic band.

  • by gulia on 10/28/09NOKIA Theatre LA LIVE - Los AngelesRating: 3 out of 5

yes, Echo and The Bunnymen rocked! The music was great and Ian sounded just as he did back in the day.... BUT, the lighting sucked!!!! There was this consistant blue down light throughout the entire concert, which is cool to open w/, sets the mood.... but we could never see the band, I may as well have been in my room listening to album. The biggest point of going to concerts is to SEE the band and singers, and of course to feel the vibe of the audience. I totally think this had an affect on the entire audience, it kept us all from connecting w/ the band... Then during one song, they flashed these huge white flood lights from the stage, out into the audience, which totally hurt everyones eyes and just gave us headaches. It was pretty discouraging. Aside from that, the music was great and we loved how they played alot of the old stuff... Next time, please put a spot light on you guys, at least some of the time:):):)
