Raised on the Bakersfield honky tonk of Buck Owens and traditional country like Johnny Cash and Hank Williams, Dwight Yoakam has created more than a dozen studio albums of his own self-described hillbilly music over nearly four decades. On his 2012 collection, “3 Pears,” the Kentucky-born performer reached out to Kid Rock and Ashley Monroe of Pistol Annies for co-writing help on a couple songs, while Beck co-produced the successful set.
Ticket buyers know a slew of Yoakam singles when they head to his concerts — from the chart-topping “Guitars Cadillacs” from the similarly-titled 1986 debut and “I Sang Dixie” off of 1988’s “Buenas Noches from a Lonely Room” to 1993’s “A Thousand Miles from Nowhere.” And when he’s not on the tour bus canvassing the nation, the singer/songwriter may be on a movie set. His acting credits include critically acclaimed roles as an abusive boyfriend in “Sling Blade” and a psychopath killer in “Panic Room.”
A+ Great concert, great venue, easy parking within venue, easy exit
it was awsome best show i wanted to get a picture but didnt it was great
I was very unhappy with the seat that I was assigned. The event was moved from the Santander arena to the Santander Performing Arts Center. I purchased a premium ticket for the original venue and the seat they moved me to at the performing arts center was behind an elevated section where I couldn't see Dwight Yoakam at all (I could see the base player off to one side). The music was great though. It would have been a 5-star event if I could have seen the performance.
The show was as great as I expected. Dwight mixed in some new material and included as many of the classics as he could fit in. He did some great storytelling in between too. He closed his encore with his classic cover of Elvis’, “Suspicious Minds.” Can’t ask for a better performance. The Mavericks had to cancel due to very unfortunate circumstances, but the opening band was absolutely fantastic! Great time at a great venue. Perfect weekend event!
He started with his new songs but ended with the old ones. He even did an encore!
Such a great show! Connected well with the crowd! Loved every minute of it!
The performers were great, especially the opening act Philip Bowen. Usually, opening acts are lame, Philip and his band were great, very enjoyable. Dwight Yoakum as usual is a pro and was in great voice. No mention of the Mavericks who had to cancel due to lead singer Raul Malo's illness. But, for some reason the concert started 45 minutes late, and the intermission between Bowen and Yoakum was way too long. The room was way too cold, people around us left because it was so frigid. And the sound was too loud. I don't know why concerts have to crank the volume up so high. It makes it hard to understand the words. I love loud music, but this was over the top. We saw Yoakum a year or so ago at the new Capital Arena in Tysons Corner VA and the sound was fine, so I blame MGM theater for the deafening sound. Thankfully the performance was top notch. I don't think either of them would appreciate the sound level!
This was our first time at the MGM Theater and Casino in Oxon Hill, Maryland. The theater staff was friendly, and the venue was very clean and nice. Temperature was cool and we saw people return to their vehicles for coats. The opening act started 45 minutes late and attendees took advantage of the nearby bars. Dwight delivered as he always does -- loud with a mix of his older and newer music. We're looking forward to returning to the MGM Theater and Casino in the future.
Great show and band along with warm-up band Philllip Bowen were both extremely "polished"and professional
Then venue had to be in the high-50's or low 60's range. We got there at just before 7. The opening band didn't start until 7:45... it went late. We got out around 11:30 We had seats in section 2-J. You couldn't understand the words... the volume was too loud for a small venue like that
Always a good time, was sorry to hear about the Mavericks not being able to open the show but Phillip Bowen and his band were a super replacement, awesome talent.
Energetic and well done! Also, great venue for sound and nostalgia
Dwight is the greatest. I see him every time he comes to town. He’s fantastic and talented and wonderful.
Yoakum was excellent...sounds just like his recordings. However the 1st band was delayed 45 min and mgm theater at national harbor was freezing ... People actually left the theater between axe to get their coats... Even with Coats on, it was still cold. There was cold air blowing along the back of your neck... This would prevent me from attending a concert there again.
Dwight was as “good”as he ever was! The entire evening was awesome! My third time seeing him in concert 🎶 Come to Philadelphia PLEASE The Fillmore would be a great venue!
First off we bought tickets to see Dwight Yoakam and the Mavericks in Reading, PA at the arena. We found out the Mavericks pulled out due to medical issues. Perfectly understandable. Then a week before the event we find out the show is moving from the arena to the performing arts building. I paid for front row seats for this show for my husband for Father’s Day. Week then we find out we will have different seats. So the front row seats we paid for became the 6th row. I called Ticketmaster and was told well the price you paid is comparable for this particular setting and they could do nothing for me. We get to the event the lady next to us had 12th row and had been moved to the 6th row and given a partial refund. On the other side the people paid over $100 less per seat for what I paid for the front row. But we were there so nothing to do about it then. Well the opening act did not show on stage until 45 minutes late. I understand a few minutes but 45. And no apologies or reason why. That being said my husband did enjoy Dwight Yokam and he put on a great show but with all the other issues it sure makes me not want to book at this arena again for fear the same thing would happen if enough tickets are not sold and get moved to a smaller venue with much worse seats and no compensation.
What I found totally unacceptable was the fact that the opening act started over 45 min late, with no explanation or apology and then performed for 45m. While they were good, I have Never been to a show that started that late or an opening act performing more than 30m!!! Thank goodness Dwight was amazing and played for close to 2 hrs.
Dwight never disappoints and at 69 years old he is a true legend. Loved how he engaged with the crowd.played all off his old favorites and some of his new ones. Great mix
The show was phenomenal! Even though it started late. Dwight is a terrific singer/songwriter and the band is amazingly talented. Had a great time!
Dwight was great at his Reading show, as usual! He just plays and plays….one song immediately after another. He still sings really well and his performance with his group was fantastic!
