Durand Jones & The Indications in Concert
New-school sensations with an exhilarating old-school sound, Durand Jones & The Indications play soul and R&B that may be classic in form but have plenty of impact in the present day. Gritty and powerful yet capable of great subtlety too, they sound like they could've recorded for Stax or Hi during the golden age of those Southern soul labels.
It's been just a few short years since the members met as students at Indiana University's Jacobs School of Music. Amazingly, frontman Durand Jones had no plans to become a singer. He'd moved from Hillaryville, Louisiana — a tiny town of 750 on the Mississippi River — to the Midwest for postgraduate studies as a saxophonist.
He took a different direction when a side project that had formed to play parties became a more serious venture for him and his fellow Indications: drummer Aaron Frazer, guitarist Blake Rhein, bassist Kyle Houpt, and organist Steve Okonski.
Over the course of a series of Sunday-evening basement recording sessions, the Indications' sound took shape. Fueled by their love for such legends as James Brown and Sam Cooke as well as more obscure acts, the songs that emerged caught the ear of Terry Cole of Colemine Records, who swiftly got to work pressing 45s of the band's first single, "Smile."
Recorded in that same dingy basement, Durand Jones & The Indications' self-titled debut album garnered much acclaim from tastemakers when it arrived in 2016. The soul and funk connoisseurs at Dusty Groove in Chicago called it "easily one of the best deep soul albums we've heard in years."
Endorsements by the Chicago Reader, NPR, and The Spill helped stoke the buzz for the group's debut, which was reissued in 2018 in a deluxe edition that included newly recorded renditions of two underground soul classics: Penny & The Quarters' "You and Me" and E.J. & The Echoes' "Put a Smile on Your Face."
Recorded at two shows on the band's fall 2017 tour, ‘Durand Jones & The Indications Live Vol. 1' is an explosive demonstration of their abilities onstage, as captured for a blue-vinyl edition released on Record Store Day 2018. After touring Europe in early 2019, they return to the U.S. to work on their second album and to perform shows at clubs and festivals, including the High Water Festival in North Charleston, S.C.

Ojays a no show. Need a refund on my tickets and vip parking
The O'Jays pulled out, The lovelites never showed. The sound was not good, as the main singers mic was lower than the back up. Very upsetting.
Everything was great, 4th row from the stage plus V.I.P access great line up. My best performance was Durand Jones and the Indications. The only problem was they closed the bar really early. Had a great time still.
The line up was great but the info was a little deceiving it was a 3-day event and it did not state what artist was preforming on each day it just had list of the performers, others around me were just as confused as I was since we all had gone to see specific artist also there were also last minute additions. Not at all what I was expecting
My husband and I usually sit behind the sound board to hopefully get the best sound, that did not happen this time. I LOVE Mayer Hawthorne and I could barely hear him. The music came in but you couldn’t hear his voice. Saw him recently at the Wiltern and he was amazing! Sound didn’t do him justice. As for the reason we were there, Durand Jones and the Indications! I thought the same thing. The music was great but I couldn’t hear Durand or Arron. Hopefully they can improve the sound system so all the artist sound how they are supposed to.
They could of played longer, too short for being the headliners.. other bands played just as or even longer , so it seemed
None of the groups were well rehearsed and they didn’t even play their popular songs 👎 What a waste of money
I wish they would’ve sang “can’t keep my cool” but otherwise Great show! They were awesome!
It was a surprise and wow what a surprise ... amazing concert, the music was on point and in the right order I can't wait to go again
I would have given it a 5 start rating except for the fact that the sound was horrible, not just for Durand Jones and the Indications but for all that played. The music was far louder than the singer's which made it hard to hear them. Every now and then when the sound sounded good so did the band. This was my second time seeing them so i know that they're good, it's just a shame that the acoustics were so horrible.
Had great time at the Durand Jones & Indications concert. Great staff no problem's. Great amphsere. Highly recommend the Toyoda area. I'll come back.
The bands and artist were great but the sound quality in the venue wasn’t. I felt like some mics worked better than others.
The concert was good, I do however wish the lighting on the artists was better. They stage was dark most of the time couldn’t get a nice clear visual. Also the lines for bar and restrooms were ridiculously long, made me not want to drink. I definitely limited my drinking to 2 drinks , when I normally will have 4-5 drinks at a concert.
One of the best concerts I have been to in a very long time, the sound was awesome and all the performers we're great.
Durand Jones should not have been the last on an event this long
I loved all the performances. Awesome Atmosphere, the crowd was so into all the music, singing along with the performers. I will be going to Red Rocks theater to see Durand Jones & The Indications!!
At the start of the show the ushers in the entrance advice Durand jones had cancelled and will not be at the show. We left after we saw the other band we wanted to see (Brenton Woods)
The overall experience was great. But there was lots of room for improvement . As far as sound quality. Could not understand the words. The lighting wasn’t the best. The big screen monitor didn’t show the bands. It was freezing in there. Like you were at a hockey game. Which I have been to there at same venue. I would love to see the same groups again. Even the dj was great. Maybe somewhere else.
The sounds system was awful with all the performers voices barely being heard through the muffled audio. The camera crew did an awful job displaying who was actually singing. I don't even want to get into how the seating left no room for even people to pass by safely. Every time the whole row had to move into the aisle for people to pass. This was the first and last time to the Toyota Arena to say the least.
