About

Durand Jones & The Indications in Concert

New-school sensations with an exhilarating old-school sound, Durand Jones & The Indications play soul and R&B that may be classic in form but have plenty of impact in the present day. Gritty and powerful yet capable of great subtlety too, they sound like they could've recorded for Stax or Hi during the golden age of those Southern soul labels.

It's been just a few short years since the members met as students at Indiana University's Jacobs School of Music. Amazingly, frontman Durand Jones had no plans to become a singer. He'd moved from Hillaryville, Louisiana — a tiny town of 750 on the Mississippi River — to the Midwest for postgraduate studies as a saxophonist.

He took a different direction when a side project that had formed to play parties became a more serious venture for him and his fellow Indications: drummer Aaron Frazer, guitarist Blake Rhein, bassist Kyle Houpt, and organist Steve Okonski.

Over the course of a series of Sunday-evening basement recording sessions, the Indications' sound took shape. Fueled by their love for such legends as James Brown and Sam Cooke as well as more obscure acts, the songs that emerged caught the ear of Terry Cole of Colemine Records, who swiftly got to work pressing 45s of the band's first single, "Smile."

Recorded in that same dingy basement, Durand Jones & The Indications' self-titled debut album garnered much acclaim from tastemakers when it arrived in 2016. The soul and funk connoisseurs at Dusty Groove in Chicago called it "easily one of the best deep soul albums we've heard in years."

Endorsements by the Chicago Reader, NPR, and The Spill helped stoke the buzz for the group's debut, which was reissued in 2018 in a deluxe edition that included newly recorded renditions of two underground soul classics: Penny & The Quarters' "You and Me" and E.J. & The Echoes' "Put a Smile on Your Face."

Recorded at two shows on the band's fall 2017 tour, ‘Durand Jones & The Indications Live Vol. 1' is an explosive demonstration of their abilities onstage, as captured for a blue-vinyl edition released on Record Store Day 2018. After touring Europe in early 2019, they return to the U.S. to work on their second album and to perform shows at clubs and festivals, including the High Water Festival in North Charleston, S.C.

    What an amazing show!

by Tom Skierka on 8/29/22Knitting Factory Concert House - Spokane - Spokane

From the first beat… to the chord… this is without a doubt the most fun I have had at a show. There were families dancing. There were people smiling and not one break for a lot and f banter. See this band before they rule the world.

    Great band, awful venue

by Ewokologist on 8/23/22Ace of Spades - Sacramento

While my partner and I are long term fans of Durand Jones and the Indications and enjoyed the opener La Doña as well, we left the event early because the Ace of Spades venue is so awful. Both the space (basically no seating unless you pay more, and a beyond cramped floor) and the sound quality tanked the show. I also found the strobe lights that shone into the audience highly distracting and much more fit for a nightclub, which the Ace of Spades should have remained as. I will not return to any show at this venue and recommend skipping unless you adore the artist playing and are willing to put up with horrid sound quality and space.

    The Resurgence I Needed

    by Lauren V on 7/25/22

I first found this band in 2020 and I was floored by the vocals and how much their sounded resembled the classic American 70s soul/funk music. Aaron and Durand sing beautiful harmonies and the following musicians create an ambience that is so alive and vibrant and makes you want to move. I’ve seen them twice live and I plan on seeing them 5 more times. They sound like their albums live and have a phenomenal presence, you will not regret checking them out.

Durand Jones & The Indications - Go SEE THEM!!!

by Lynn on 5/23/22Neptune Theatre - Seattle

The Durand Jones & The Indications concert at Neptune theater on May 19th was absolutely fantastic. They are wonderful performers and they brought so much energy to their show, which they seemed to feel coming back at them from the crowd. It was one of the better shows that I have seen and I see a lot of shows:). I will definitely try to see them again if they come through Seattle.

The Band is Great! Ticketmaster is still the WORST

by Joe D on 5/23/22Neptune Theatre - Seattle

I love this band, and they delivered as always…. But I am still so sick of Ticketmaster’s price gouging. The fees were already ridiculous, now “dynamic pricing” is even worse. I bet they won’t post this review. Stop letting your greed ruin the concert experience for fans… you are pricing people out of seeing their favorite band. That is extremely wack.

    Time of my life!

by A Money on 5/23/22Neptune Theatre - Seattle

Such a great concert. I did not even know that we were VIP admission and we got to watch the show front and center. We got to leave with tote bags and everything! I love the Durand Jones and The Indications!

    I can't hear you

by What? on 2/18/22Toyota Arena - Ontario

Great line up of performers. Myself and many others agreed the sound at this venue was terrible. Newer songs were played and if you didn't know the song forget about it. Wasn't able to put together what the MC was saying either. Not sure if those that spent more money on tickets down in the floor area were able to hear any better. Needless to say, myself and my guests weren't so happy.

    Love Train what great performances!!

by Kelly on 2/16/22Toyota Arena - Ontario

Each performance was perfect for Valentine’s Day, and there were many bands throughout the evening . Got to see fabulous Ohio players, in all their glory. Enjoyed Meyer Hawthorne ,Duran Jones, Candy Man, and other bands. A great variety of bands. A DJ performed between bands, who I really liked. The volume was perfect, temperature in arena nice and cool which is great. Love the big screens .

    Great!

by Des on 2/15/22Toyota Arena - Ontario

It was nice to be at a concert again. The energy was amazing, and everyone I went with had an amazing time. The concert was a little long though. Some played longer sets than others, and I feel a couple could have had the shorter set instead. But overall great concert with a dope lineup.

    Not Happy

by Teri on 2/15/22Toyota Arena - Ontario

When we arrived to the Arena, we were told that the O’Jays WOULD NOT be preforming. That was ok if we had of known before we traveled there from Inglewood.
