Duke Blue Devils Men's Basketball History

The Duke Blue Devils men's basketball team is one of the most victorious programs in the NCAA. Duke's history is highlighted by five NCAA Championships, a record 22 Atlantic Coast Conference championships and 17 Final Four appearances.

The Duke basketball program began in 1905, and joined the Southern Conference ahead of the 1928-29 season. Under head coach Eddie Cameron, the Blue Devils won their first three conference championships between 1938 and 1942. In 1953, Duke co-founded the Atlantic Coast Conference and finished the inaugural season in first place. The team continued to maintain winning records and experience peaks with teams led by coaches Vic Bubas and Bill Foster. The Blue Devils really began to build their greatest dynasty in 1980, when Mike “Coach K” Krzyzewski took over as head coach.

Coach K’s tenure brought the Blue Devils their first of five National Championships in 1991, 15 ACC Tournament titles and 13 Final Four appearances. Krzyzewski also presided over many of the Blue Devils’ most memorable moments, including Christian Laettner’s overtime buzzer-beater shot in 1992 and the 2001 “Miracle Minute.” Krzyzewski retired as the winningest coach in NCAA men’s basketball history with 1,202 victories, and was succeeded by his former player and Duke assistant coach Jon Scheyer, who led the 2022-23 squad to an ACC Tournament championship.

Duke has produced 11 National Players of the Year and 71 NBA draftees, including a record 11 Top 10 draft picks. Additionally, 36 players have been named All-Americans and 14 Academic All-Americans. The Blue Devils have finished the season ranked No. 1 in the AP poll seven times and held the top spot weekly for a record 135 weeks. The Blue Devils have the third longest streak in the AP Top 25 in history with 200 consecutive appearances from 1996 to 2007, trailing just Kansas and UCLA.

Duke Blue Devils at Cameron Indoor Stadium

Cameron Indoor Stadium became the home court for the Duke Blue Devils in 1940. Originally named Duke Indoor Stadium, the venue changed its name in 1972 to honor former Blue Devils coach and longtime university athletic director Eddie Cameron. The venue offers one of the best home court advantages, with the Blue Devils maintaining a 832–154 record and .844 winning percentage at home through 2022. Eager fans occupy the designated Krzyzewskiville area outside of the stadium ahead of big games, while students within the student section have been called the Cameron Crazies. Cameron Indoor Stadium has undergone several renovations, most recently in 2016, and has a current capacity of 9,314.

    Game was just ok

by kcaJA on 12/6/10IZOD Center - East Rutherford

Butler kept it competetive for 30 minutes. Duke looked great in warm-ups, but far less than that in the game. Off this game there's no way they're #1. Was the game "worth it" for its inflated price (plus $20 to park for a college basketball game?!?) No way!

Great game, great seats, but TERRIBLE TRANSIT

by Lumberjackalope on 12/6/10IZOD Center - East Rutherford

The game was pretty phenomenal. Didn't seem to be a bad seat in the house, and our seats were particularly great. The only problem was the TRANSIT. They only had 3 buses shuttling people from the Meadowlands to Manhattan after the game. We ended up waiting an hour and a half in 30 degree windy weather to get on a bus. Terrible transit. Other than that it was alright. Also, be careful because the food was incredibly expensive. 2 hot dogs and 2 beers ended up costing $24. And the food wasn't very good, but most people know this going in.

    Duke may go undefeated!

by Bball1 on 12/6/10IZOD Center - East Rutherford

The hyped up Duke - Butler re-match did not materialize into the game that everyone hoped for. Butler had Duke on the ropes for a good part of the game, but the Blue Devils, despite not playing well, showed their depth and resilience winning going away.

    Seating wasn't terrific...

by NNDOOKIE on 12/6/10IZOD Center - East Rutherford

Considering that I ordered these tickets the moment they were available, I was surprised at how poor the seats were and how many open seats there were in the arena. Very disappointing that my early ordering didn't result in better seats.

    Duke vs Iowa State

by dukefansmom on 1/9/10United Center - Chicago

My son is an avid Duke fan and was thrilled to be able to attend. Our whole family went as a "Christmas" treat. We worried about the weather and had a horrid return trip but made it home safe and sound a day later than planned. But my son said it was all worth it to see his Duke Devils in person!

    2nd row for Scheyer's homecoming...priceless!

    by bedwetr7 on 1/8/10United Center - Chicago

Sitting 6 feet behind the Duke bench and listening to Coach K's every word was absolutely amazing. Watching Duke crush Iowa State and witnessing Jon Scheyer score 31 at his homecoming game in Chicago was just the icing on the cake. There's so much more I could wtrite on here but I'm utterly speechless from the entire experience. One of the greatest and most memorable experiences of my life easily.

    An amazing experience!!

    by dukefan4 on 1/7/10United Center - Chicago

We had great seats that weren't too expensive. As Duke fans for many years it was great to be able to see them in Chicago. It was my second time seeing them but a lot better seeing them from the 100 level as appose to the 300. Of course the win made it even better. Can't wait for the next opportunity to see them in Chicago.

    Duke took care of business

    by Dukefan33 on 1/7/10United Center - Chicago

Me and my nephew are big Duke fans, we've been planning to go down to North Carolina to see a Duke game. But since they came here to play Iowa State, we got tickets. These seats were amazing, we didnt think we would be that close to the floor. One small suggestion, if you could let us know next time which side is Duke. We were in enemy territory. And not bad for the price too.
