Duke Blue Devils Men's Basketball History

The Duke Blue Devils men's basketball team is one of the most victorious programs in the NCAA. Duke's history is highlighted by five NCAA Championships, a record 22 Atlantic Coast Conference championships and 17 Final Four appearances.

The Duke basketball program began in 1905, and joined the Southern Conference ahead of the 1928-29 season. Under head coach Eddie Cameron, the Blue Devils won their first three conference championships between 1938 and 1942. In 1953, Duke co-founded the Atlantic Coast Conference and finished the inaugural season in first place. The team continued to maintain winning records and experience peaks with teams led by coaches Vic Bubas and Bill Foster. The Blue Devils really began to build their greatest dynasty in 1980, when Mike “Coach K” Krzyzewski took over as head coach.

Coach K’s tenure brought the Blue Devils their first of five National Championships in 1991, 15 ACC Tournament titles and 13 Final Four appearances. Krzyzewski also presided over many of the Blue Devils’ most memorable moments, including Christian Laettner’s overtime buzzer-beater shot in 1992 and the 2001 “Miracle Minute.” Krzyzewski retired as the winningest coach in NCAA men’s basketball history with 1,202 victories, and was succeeded by his former player and Duke assistant coach Jon Scheyer, who led the 2022-23 squad to an ACC Tournament championship.

Duke has produced 11 National Players of the Year and 71 NBA draftees, including a record 11 Top 10 draft picks. Additionally, 36 players have been named All-Americans and 14 Academic All-Americans. The Blue Devils have finished the season ranked No. 1 in the AP poll seven times and held the top spot weekly for a record 135 weeks. The Blue Devils have the third longest streak in the AP Top 25 in history with 200 consecutive appearances from 1996 to 2007, trailing just Kansas and UCLA.

Duke Blue Devils at Cameron Indoor Stadium

Cameron Indoor Stadium became the home court for the Duke Blue Devils in 1940. Originally named Duke Indoor Stadium, the venue changed its name in 1972 to honor former Blue Devils coach and longtime university athletic director Eddie Cameron. The venue offers one of the best home court advantages, with the Blue Devils maintaining a 832–154 record and .844 winning percentage at home through 2022. Eager fans occupy the designated Krzyzewskiville area outside of the stadium ahead of big games, while students within the student section have been called the Cameron Crazies. Cameron Indoor Stadium has undergone several renovations, most recently in 2016, and has a current capacity of 9,314.

Other than some "tie ups" to park the car, had a great time and saw some decent basketball.

    Duke v Temple 12/08/12

by NJDukeFan on 12/10/12IZOD Center - East Rutherford

Always a great game, plus it is a double header so great price. Parking is so easy In and Out. We sat in 3rd row court side seats, sounds good, but 3rd row court side you can only see the players from their shoulders up. Have to watch the TV screens too much.

    Duke Rocks!

by NJLightning01 on 12/10/12IZOD Center - East Rutherford

Good game, Temple was over matched by a much bigger and more talented Blue Devils team led by Seth Curry/ Pretty good sized crowd, dominated by Duke fans even though the Temple campus is only about 90 min away.

The game was entertaining and my seats were good, but the arena was a complete dive.

Duke game was a good one

by amytush on 12/10/12IZOD Center - East Rutherford

The venue was nice and there were a lot of helpful people to ask questions to if needed. There was not that many food options. I had reserved parking tickets and I wasn't quite sure if I parked in the right place but it seemed to work out fine anyway.

    A NEAR PERFECT GAME

The crowd was disappointing, but the Blue Devils did the job.

Good match up and good atmosphere. Beer stops??

by Anokwale on 12/10/12IZOD Center - East Rutherford

A solid college game. I did not like the result. I am a Temple fan. I was a bit surprised that they stopped serving beer once the second half starts!!! That took away from the experience. Tickets are a bit high for the IZOD Center. I think the Prudential Center in Newark is going to take over these type of college match ups. Prudential Center is definitely a nicer arena.

    Duke v Temple

by BballMom5 on 12/10/12IZOD Center - East Rutherford

Seats were great and crowd was fun. Duke did not disappoint. But, wondered why in the world was a Temple game right outside of New York City. Venue is too far away for a Philly girl. What was wrong with the Wachovia or Liacuras Center? I would've taken the Palestra....... I won't attend any more events at the Izod Center. Just too far away.

When I purchased tickets i thought i was in nose bleed seats only to get there, and was pleasantly surprised we had great seats! Do not feel there are any really bad seats in the house for a basketball event!
