Founded in 1957, The Dubuque Symphony Orchestra (DSO) is a professional ensemble serving the residents of Dubuque, Iowa and the surrounding tri-state area. Each year the symphony performs a repertoire of classics, pops, chamber, and opera concerts. The DSO also presents free concerts to over 3,500 students and DSO musicians serve as musical ambassadors in local 4th grade classrooms. The Dubuque Youth Ensembles are a dynamic portion of the DSO’s programs. Over 70 students participate in the Dubuque Youth String Ensemble, Philharmonia, or Dubuque Symphony Youth Orchestra.
Wonderful concert, lots of fun, with very talented musicians !! We had a blast !!
I traveled all the way from Cleveland, Ohio to hear the Dubuque Symphony perform and was not disappointed in the least!!! The evening was packed full of wonderful music, very entertaining!! This Orchestra never ceases to amaze me, well worth the travel time to get there!! If you've never experienced this group of professionals, do yourself a favor and invest in a ticket!
I attended both the family concert and the evening concert. Both were thrilling. My 5 year old grandson was very attentive and swayed to the music. After the "pirates...) he said "I wanna see the movie". The evening concert expanded on material from the family concert. With the opening "Star Wars" theme, I returned to the first time I saw the movie in its original run. I remembered the awe I felt seeing spaceships that seemed to fly right over m head. I doubt that that scene would have had nearly the same impact without John Williams music. And that goes for music from all his film work. The concert ended with what has to be one of my 5 favorite classical pieces. The orchestra did a fabulous job with the complex harmonies and rhythms. scheherazade Is one of the first classical pieces that I fell in love with and that experience was repeated stunningly on Saturday night. Thank you for a night to remember. PS: A full production of "West Side Story"!!! Unbelievable. I hate to wish my life away but I'll have to admit that I can't wait.
Really enjoyed the Showcase of DuBuque Symphony members. The marimba piece by Keith Lienert was terrific. It is really nice to see members of the Symphony shown and how talented they are.
The Holiday Concert by the Dubuque Symphony was filled with great Holiday music superbly performed by talented performers. Bravo to all who made this beautiful concert possible!
It's so amazing that an orchestra this talented is in Dubuque!
On Sunday afternoon the Dubuque Symphony Orchestra hosted Midori for her final activity of a week filled with encounters with about 3000 Dubuque area youth. This community was honored with Midori's presence, wisdom, and outstanding performances. After visiting with a number of school groups, a public interview with Conductor William Intriligator, and a concert with the Dubuque Symphony Youth Orchestra, Midori closed the two weekend Dubuque Symphony Orchestra concerts by magnificently performing Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto in D Major. It was a fitting finish to the program that began with Dvorak's "New World" Symphony No. 9 in E Minor performed with incredible energy and beauty by the talented local orchestra.
As a first timer a number of things were observed. The musicians and conductor are incredible! The chorus was wonderful to hear and observe as they so showed that they were enjoying the music. The theater has so much character and history! Next time I will get seats not in the top of the balcony for a bit more leg room, although the view and sound were really good. My biggest disappointment was that although one respects the original work, I have heard Brahms "Requiem" sung in English and I feel the audience would have gotten even more from the text than the paper with the translation provided. Overall it was a wonderful concert and I will come again!
I thought it was exquisite. My husband said that it was the best concert with the Chorale and Orchestra he had heard, and that is saying something.
no one can sit in those seats for that long a time and enjoy the music
Enjoyed our experience - outstanding orchestra, choral, & vocalists! Fantastic!!
It was a wonderful time. I didn't know some of the songs played but I think they turned out to be my favorites.
My wife and I enjoyed the concert very much. It is a great way to start the holiday season!
Amazing show! We had gone to the open rehearsal and decided we needed to see it again and purchased tickets to the actual show. If you ever get the chance to see him in person, do it! Simply amazing! Did I mention it was amazing????!!!!
The DSO is always fun! This show was no exception. The orchestra was amazing, conductor William Intriligator is a blast to watch, and the guest violinist blew me away. I spent a little more this time on a better seat (usually I get a cheap seat and can't see the full orchestra). It was well worth the additional $10!
We sat in the balcony. You could heard the audio from the other production in the building. Distracting and unfortunate. Took away from the experience. I could tell others around us also noticed.
The Holiday Pops was fantastic this year. The vocals of Sarah Ellis were inspiring.
Wow! What a fabulous clarinet performance! Fast and furious, the notes were so fast you could hardly keep up. It was toe tapping, finger snapping, can't stay still on your seat performance that kept a big smile on your face!!!!
I really enjoyed the atmosphere, it was a little bit unexpected.
The Dubuque Symphony Orchestra marvelously performed Beethoven's 5th. The guest pianist was incredible. It is wonderful to have a gem like the orchestra here in Dubuque.
