About

2013 saw a double release for Dream Theater: a self-titled studio album and Live at Luna Park, an album that features material taken from the band's A Dramatic Turn of Events tour in 2012. This latter release is a treat, featuring two DVDs and three CDs of material that highlights the prog metal theatrics delighting ticket buyers for over 25 years. These theatrics revolve around the band's consummate artistry. Dream Theater's prog roots compel them to focus on musical craftsmanship as the driving force of their performance. However, serious musicianship is not without its spark of playfulness. A love of quirky humor often pops up when the band performs in concert. It's not uncommon for ticket buyers to be pleasantly surprised by alternating set lists, musical quotes and spontaneous bursts of improvisation. Members of the band have even swapped instruments mid-set just to keep things fresh.

Dream Theater's newest, self-titled album contains all the elements that make the band stand out among their peers. The opening, "False Awakening Suite," sets a cinematic tone for the rest of the tracks. The hard-driving "The Enemy Inside" invokes shades of classic Iron Maiden, yet with Dream Theater's own unique twist. The band has been going hard and strong since 1985, when three music school graduates started the band as a tribute to their heroes. Armed with a stack of potent demos, they hit the NYC circuit, shopping tapes and strengthening their live act. Each new album chronicles their steady artistic progression, as constant touring helps to keep things fresh and their musicianship alive. Dream Theater's music is a lively blend of heavy metal and prog rock, with jazz and classical elements thrown in for a healthy amount of spice.

DreamSonic 2023 @ Marymoor Live: Fantastic venue and concert

    by probassist on 7/26/23

DreamSonic 2023 Animals as Leaders, Devin Townsend, & Dream Theater Beautiful warm sunny day with light breeze. Lots of room to mingle in a clean and beautiful outdoor space, without congestion in the parking lot or the event. Standard chair sizes were used in the forward sections which can cause trouble for those larger of us. Marymoore Live event staff were unexpectedly and notably friendly and helpful upon parking and arrival to the gates. Alcohol Enforcement team was exceptional (saw them handle a few possible offenders but it wasn't intrusive to the concertgoers experience). At least 6 different food trucks, with options for just about any diet need, several different wine and beer options for those inclined. Professionals all around. Sound was amazing, clear, tight, and sounded near exactly like the albums from front sections to the farthest seating areas. This was pretty impressive to me; don't remember a concert every sounded that good. The artists' performances were excellent, especially considering John Myung (Dream Theater bassist) wouldn't allow the concert to be canceled for his head trauma injury the night before. What a warrior, played sitting down with a patch that covered one eye and his forehead. I could tell James's voice was tired from the tour, but he still gave it everything he had. The finale was awesome. All three bands shared the stage and instruments to reprise The Spirit Carries on. Mine will be carrying on about this event for a while. Love to relive that day again and again. Well done all.

    by Nutterbutter42 on 7/26/23

It’s Dream theater!!! of course they put on a fantastic show their absolute masters at what they do. The bass player john had injured his head pretty bad the night before the concert and yet they still went on and played an amazing show!

    Nice Day Outside

    by Daxus on 7/25/23

Great show, nice venue, relaxed crowd. Introduced to some new talent and had a great time experiencing a genera I haven't listened too since high school... However venue operations / security was oddly on edge and almost combative as they screamed as us to comply with rules not posted on the FAQ or posted signs. Felt I was almost tackled on my way out for holding onto an empty soda can I wanted to recycle rather than throw in the trash. Others leaving were just as confused as what was being yelled out but I'll chock it up to them having a long day. I'd attend again next year but only if its at another venue.

    Perfect show

This tour was great. The technical aspects were terrific, the stage turns were very swift. The music was exceptional. I had a blast.

3 bands that had each other's back!

by Biff the tuber on 7/25/23

While I went with expectations for a great show, which is what I got, when entering the parking area they were trying to collect 20 bucks. I thought parking was reserved only (at least that was why I bought parking passes). Deven Townsend was a great entertainer. And turned me into a fan! Finding out that the bassist for Dream Theater suffered a head injury the day before was alarming. And I hope he has no future issues. Animals as leaders were fantastic. Other than the parking, love the experience!

    Best show of 2023

    by Lambo on 7/25/23

What a great lineup. All the best at what they do and incredible closer with almost all on stage. Thanks for the show and looking forward to next years!

Dream needs to start giving fans what they want

    by Rana on 7/25/23

Dream Theater is not what it used to be at a concert, the new music does not have the spark, start thinking about your older crowd (the vast majority). Regardless, I am still impressed by your virtuosity at each instrument, Myung, what a professional after what happened to him! Love the band.

    A decent concert

    by The w34vi1 on 7/25/23

Dream Theater was awesome. This made the 7th time seeing them live and it didn’t disappoint. The venue itself was a little cramped for an outside venue and one person next to me didn’t have any concert educate, but overall was a great show. Even with a member recovering from injuries they played incredibly. Animal as Leaders was great, Devin Townsend wasn’t my favorite and his EQs were not exactly strong. His vocals were hard to understand most of the time. Many of his supports also didn’t have strong concert educate but most of them were drunk by the time he took the stage.

    Progtopia Achieved

    by MarkisQT on 7/25/23

I cannot imagine a better prog-metal lineup. The crowd was engaged from the very first note by Animals as Leaders. Then, Devin Townsend astounded the crowd with the most energetic show I’ve seen in over a year! That man is a true showman as well as a musical wizard. Please convince Devin Townsend to tour again and again! Finally, Dream Theater awed everyone with the sophisticated prowess they’re known for. Song choices were mostly good, and the finale was a spectacle for the ages that every attendee with be talking about! Overall, DreamSonic was worth every penny, and I really hope this becomes an annual summer circuit as intended.

    The show itself: Awesome. But....

    by Camelotum on 7/25/23

The show itself was awesome.Great energy on stage. But, I paid for seats together. On the seating chart, I bought 3 tickets in section A, row 23, seats 12-13-14. When we arrived, the seat 14 was delarested from seat 12 and 13 by an alley. So, my two kids were on one side and I was on the other side. VERY dissatisfied.

    Dream Theater was okay

    by Gomer on 7/25/23

They haven't been to Portland since 2016 so I finally broke down and drove 2.5 hours to their closest stop. AAL seemed upset they were playing while the sun was out. Tosin made veiled sarcastic comments about it. I really didn't know Devin Townsend all that well but he was saving grace of the entire show. He is high energy and seems to genuinely be having a good time on. I'd see him again for sure. Dream Theater left a lot to be desired. James seemed upset the entire show. They also picked songs with notes he couldn't hit. With it being more of a festival and a shorter set, I don't know why they picked those songs if couldn't hit the high notes. The encore was also a strange choice. My hats off to John for playing through his injury and other John for trying to keep the energy up but I won't travel that far again to see them. Jordan comes to Portland on his solo tours and Haken comes every year. Hopefully Dream Theater will do the same one day.

    Great concert

    by Kim on 7/25/23

Everything was quick and smooth getting in. I was actually there to see Devin Townsend and didn't know much about the other bands, but they were all good. Love love love Devin though. Would have loved to have a longer set from him, but understand since there are three bands playing.

    Best Of Three

    by Konrad on 7/24/23

Third time I’ve seen DT. Even though they didn’t play some of my favourites I thought the sound was bang on, in particular Petrucci’s guitar tones. He’s got Pull Me Under dialled in to where he can cover the multiple tracks. Animals as Leaders were also great as was Devin Townsend. Great show all around!

No choice kind of killed it

    by Chris on 7/24/23

First off, the bands all were amazing. Devin townsend is one of the best performers I've ever seen. Sound was great, view was good. My only complaint is that I bought a floor seat, general admission. There were no seat choices just floor. 2 days before the show they add seats and I get assigned one. I bought floor so I could get close, that choice was taken from me with no option to choose where I sat. Pretty unhappy about that.

    Too short

    by Aen on 7/24/23

No matter I love every single song, the concert was too short . Only 1.5 hrs. I know they are not in their 20’s but I was expecting more time.

    Room for venue improvement

    by Redrocker on 7/22/23

Never heard of the first 2 bands, not my type of music. I think Dream Theater is a great band and have enjoyed their music since 1989. I could have saved myself and my wife $250 by staying at home and listening to their cds, or watched them in concert on youtube. Their concert in Boston was enjoyable. The Jubilee Auditorium in Edmonton does not seem to be a place for rocking bands to play. Everything was so loud it was difficult to understand most of what was being spoken by the front man of the bands. The music was great, don't get me wrong. I enjoyed much more the video recording of Dream Theater in Boston than what I saw in real life. The show was, for the price, a disappointment.

    Dream Theatre and others

    by Progressivemetal on 7/21/23

Not really impressed by Devin, animals as leaders very good but not a fan of djent, dream theatre was beyond the horizon as always but short; dream theatre is something should be seen only them on the stage for more than 1.5 hours; sad side of the story, a guy was drunk+drugged that almost caused a fight; we don’t go to see dream theatre to be closed to a unnecessary; personally I won’t go again to grey eagle

    Amazing bands - terrible venue

    by 2BBerean on 7/21/23

5 stars for the bands. Animals as leaders are extraordinary and true innovators in the Djent genre. So accomplished and they really set the tone for the evening. Devin Townsend was so entertaining, playing to the crowd, and creating a wonderful contrast in his set, with the band in too form. DT was awesome! Loved seeing Mike Mangini for the first time and I really enjoyed the set list. The latest album is the best since Octavarium and we were treated to a good mix of new and old including some classics from Awake. The encore of The Spirit Carries On, with the other act’s members joining in was a fitting close to a great performance by everyone. LaBrie’s voice has lost some upper range but he was there when he needed to be, though a bit pitchy at times. Still, he sang with great conviction and it didn’t detract from the show. 4th time seeing DT and this was, for me, the best show of the bunch (with apologies to Mike Portnoy) Now, to the venue. I like the Grey Eagle and have seen other shows there. They are well organized and the place is open and clean, with adequate parking but….there was no seating! 4+ hour show, standing the whole time! When I pay to see a show, I’d like to actually SEE the show, not craning my neck around 6’2” wide bodies the whole night, just to catch a glimpse of a guitar! I took my daughters who are 5’5 and 5’3 and they couldn’t see at all. A real shame and something that the Grey Eagle needs to never do again! Just because it was a “Metal” show doesn’t mean that we have to put up with that. Very disappointing and it did detract from the overall experience for everyone. That being said, if you have the chance to see this tour, don’t hesitate. It’s fantastic!
