About

Donald Glover is the consummate example of the Hollywood triple-threat. The 26-year old actor, writer, and musician is quickly positioning himself as one of Hollywood's most promising talents. Most recognized for his role as the jock "Troy" on NBC's Community, Donald was hired as a staff writer on the hit-show 30 Rock while still a Resident Assistant at NYU. During his time at 30 Rock the show won two Emmys for Outstanding Comedy Series, as well as a Writer's Guild Award for Best Comedy.

Donald was born in California on Edwards Air Force Base and moved to Atlanta when he was four. There he studied drama and the process of writing short plays, which he continued to study at New York University's Dramatic Writing program at Tisch. While at NYU, Donald studied improvisation and comedy writing with the Upright Citizen's Brigade Theatre and had the honor of improvising with the likes of Amy Poehler and Horatio Sanz. He also performed on Late Night with Conan O'Brien multiple times.

Donald is also one of the founding members of the internet sketch comedy sensation, DERRICK Comedy. The group's YouTube channel has garnered over 5 million views. The group's first feature film which Donald co-wrote, produced, scored and starred in, Mystery Team, was released in Los Angeles in March 2010 and on DVD in May 2010.

In addition to Community, Donald continues to tour and perform stand-up. His first Comedy Central Stand-Up Special aired in March, 2010. In July 2010, Donald received the first-ever Rising Comedy Star of the Year Award at the 2010 Just For Laughs Comedy Festival in Montreal.

In addition to acting, Donald raps under the moniker "Childish Gambino". Most recently he released two mixtapes, I Am Just A Rapper and I Am Just A Rapper 2 and his most recent album entitled Culdesac was released in July, 2010.

    Gambino is a mastermind

    by ao5357 on 5/19/11Magic Stick - Detroit

From the very beginning, the iamdonald show was sensory overload. A large projection screen started with stylized titles and visual gags, which segued well into Donald's standup set. His set about 'rules' about after the show was derivative of his interview on the Anytime Show podcast, but still really funny. When he got into his Reggie Bush material, it was a bunch of stuff I hadn't heard before and nobody had mentioned in reviews of previous shows on the tour. This cut in to his LCD Soundsystem guy faux facetime call (which already felt a little dated — I mean, 'Louie'?) and his worth-the-ticket price future self segment. This extended sketch video led straight into his rap show. He did a long set with impressive singing and stamina for being under-the-weather. The live instrumentals, especially the two violins and multiple bass-heavy drums, provided excellent background for the vocals without completely stealing the show. What made me happy is that he did a 4-song encore, claiming Detroit was hype; since other shows on the tour got fewer songs, it makes me proud that the Detroit crowd impressed that hype-ness upon him. In talking with some friends who were at the show, I think there was agreement that we'd all have loved even more of the comedy opener, despite being huge fans of his music.

    Just so damn good.

by ihadfun on 5/19/11Music Hall of Williamsburg - Brooklyn

Donald Glover is hilarious in his own right. This is clear by his writing for 30 Rock and now his role on Community. But his stand-up is impeccable. Glover knows very well how to perfectly time a joke and how to play off of and with the audience. While I would have liked to see a bit more stand-up (the comedy only made up about 45 minutes of the show), what really blew me away was the Gambino set. I'm a big fan of the recordings put out under Glover's moniker, but I have never seen someone so actively engaged in his performance. The guy sings and raps about working himself to the brink and being better than everyone who ever doubted him, and standing in the pit, watching him leave 110% out on the stage was inspiring to say the least. Truly an outstanding performer, one of a kind, historical.

    Hilarious and Bumpin

by jahknoww on 5/17/11The Music Box - Hollywood

There was the perfect mix of comedy and music in Donald Glover's concert. The video he played wasn't great but the rest of his performance was amazing. I hadn't laughed that hard in a long time, and hearing all my favorite songs by him was great in person.

    Donald can do it all

by asiantom on 5/17/11Paradise Rock Club - Boston

I rated this 5 stars because Donald Glover is pretty godlike. He's hilarious and he makes some good music. I had a great time, the only thing I would complain about is his stand-up being TOO short. I was hoping for 50% Stand-Up and 50% Music. I still had a great time and I can't wait for him to pop back into Boston.

    Unbelievable

    by Ace18 on 5/17/11Variety Playhouse - Atlanta

The IAMDONALD show in Atl, Ga was absolutely amazing. Donald Glover started out with some stand-up comedy, transitioned to a video clip, and then began rapping as Childish Gambino. He was very interactive, funny, a skilled rapper, and a sweet person. He killed the show and had everyone singing along and jumping around with him. Donald Glover was nice enough to hang around the venue and meet everyone who hung around after the show. SPEECHLESS! Best show of my life.

    Incredible

by golfwang on 5/16/11Variety Playhouse - Atlanta

Ahhhhh this show was dope. Donald is insanely talented. If you like comedy and good music, you should go. He's still new to the music side of things, so it's great to see him now before he blows up and the shows get crazy expensive.

    Donald leaves me conflicted

by APatfan on 5/16/11Paradise Rock Club - Boston

I've been a fan of Donald Glover's sketch comedy for about 5 years and have really enjoyed watching his comedy career as it's progressed. The man's got charisma, and he's a hell of a writer, which is obvious in his pre-taped sketches that were played at the show. The stand up was entertaining, but it leaned very heavily on storytelling. Considering his skill as a character actor and writer, I can't help but feel like he could bring more to the table. The video skits did provide some more of this, but they wrapped up a comedy set that was shorter than advertised. I'm also torn on what to think about the Childish Gambino set. Let me first say this: it was definitely entertaining. His backing band was on fire (especially the violin... how often do you see that at a hip-hop show?) and he brings incredible energy to the stage while looking like a natural with a mic in his hand. But as with his comedy, I keep going back to expecting more from the writing. Whenever I listen to a Childish song, I'm left thinking he has clever, original lines... but at some point he has to do more than come up with smart ways of saying he was a nerd as a kid but now he gets with a lot of girls. Overall, I wish there was a 3.5 rating. I'd recommend this show because it's a good time. I just can't help but feel like I just saw him a year before he puts it all together and really blows up. I guess that's cool in its own way.

Donald Glover can do it ALL

by rgw5126 on 5/16/11Music Hall of Williamsburg - Brooklyn

Very well put-together show. I was thoroughly entertained from start to finish. It was clear that this show in particular meant a lot to him. Lost his voice towards the end, but it didn't matter. AWESOME band, great videos.

    Funny and Smart

by ApunkfromSI on 5/16/11Music Hall of Williamsburg - Brooklyn

Not only is Donald Glover funny as hell but he is a smart and funny lyricist. His muscial persona and stage preformance is unforgettable. Maybe next time I go to see him my girlfriend will have something better to say than, "Oh HI", when he walks through the crowd in front of us

    Such an amazing time

by epop86 on 5/16/11Music Hall of Williamsburg - Brooklyn

Ive been listening to his music for about a year now, and i instantly got tickets the second i heard he was playing. I love the venue, its pretty small but i like that. He was recording it and joel mchale just so happened to be the person right in the middle of the crowd taping it for him! My friends who hadnt heard the music as much were a little upset that there wasnt more jokes, but i definitely went for the music first and foremost.

    Concert of a Lifetime.

by DanJin on 5/15/11Paradise Rock Club - Boston

Donald Glover is the most talented individual in the world. His standup was hilarious and put the whole crowd in a happy mood. His transition into Childish Gambino was very entertaining, and when he came back, he came back with a storm. Starting out with Freaks and Geeks, he sang all his big hits one after another. By the end, I lost my voice, but was never happier in my life. PLEASE GO SEE HIM. IT WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE

Concert was simply amazing. The venue was small but I really think he could have killed a sold out show at the Garden or at the Comcast Center.

I appreciated that Donald Glover opened with some comedy, although the music was clearly the main draw for both him and the audience. He was funny and cool and hip and all that, but he was obviously just waiting to come out and destroy in that red sweatshirt. I thought the comedy portion could have had a little more thought put into it, but he's so good at the music aspect that you really can't complain. Definitely a unique night!

by BonzoHh on 5/15/11Paradise Rock Club - Boston

One of the most creative hip hop shows I've ever attended. Donald Glover gives a refreshing spin to the genre and knows exactly what to do and say to make the crowd cry from laughing so hard.

    Best Show of 2011

by KobraCola on 5/15/11Paradise Rock Club - Boston

Childish Gambino was by far the best show I've been to all year. The stand-up comedy was hilarious, the videos on the screen were awesome, but the music itself was the best part. He even played a very long encore, which I was surprised about, but I really, truly enjoyed it. Only problems: Boston's crowd wasn't hyped enough (whats up with that Boston???) and he started with "Freaks and Geeks," which he should've saved till later. Overall, it was fantastic.
