    A feel-good play!!

    by Baltimoreclassof1966 on 1/4/15Signature Theatre - Arlington

The show is good but the first act runs a little too long. As a Baltimorean, I loved the references to "Forest Park colors" and the Colts. I have eaten at that diner in real life - it was in Northwest Baltimore!!! Brought back memories.

Entertaining show with a lot of potential

    by dccarol68 on 1/4/15Signature Theatre - Arlington

Very enjoyable music and cast. Narration was a little hokey and ended up giving it a "dated" vibe, but most of the cast were really good. The production would actually benefit from a larger stage -- e.g., on Broadway!

This Diner serves up the dull

by jstagy on 1/2/15Signature Theatre - Arlington

We had high hopes for this musical since we love most Signature productions and liked the movie and admire Sheryl Crow. Unfortunately this show was a disappointment. The music was bland and repetitive. We didn't leave with any memorable song stuck in our heads. The script was a bit of a mess that seemed to lack purpose, tension, humor and conflict. There seemed to be no commitment to a central theme or protagonist, but rather a fleeting touch on several of each. The performances and voices were good throughout, with only a couple of weak moments.

Glad I Saw It, But Wouldn't See It Again

by NovaDramaGuy on 12/31/14Signature Theatre - Arlington

I'd have given this three and a half stars if that were my option. The cast is very strong overall, and I enjoyed most of the music a good deal. There's a narrator character that doesn't need to exist, which was kind of annoying. I don't know the movie so cannot comment on how well this show adapts it. If you're an Arlington County taxpayer, you might as well see it, since you're helping keep Signature in business now.

    Diner a bit slow

by ladysitka on 12/31/14Signature Theatre - Arlington

Pleasant evening, some good performances, but overall underwhelming. Few of the songs were inspired, the stage too small for dancing, and Older Boogie seemed pedantic after the initial set-up. This show needs to be tightened up.

    Diner

by Cushkin on 12/30/14Signature Theatre - Arlington

We really enjoyed the show. The music captured the spirit of the late 50s. Some of the songs, with a little work, could be amazing! It dragged a little and sometimes it was confusing (who the characters were) but all in all, we had a good time.

    Diner Was Average Fare

    by 0630 on 12/29/14Signature Theatre - Arlington

While the music and lyrics were good enough, some of them might have gained by turning the gain down. Much too loud for the venue. One or two could find their way to the pop charts. The whole bit about the sports test (while possibly true in some ridiculous way) seemed unbelievable and mostly annoyed us. Performers were good enough, but over the top in some areas. Most especially, the girls in the dressing room had a great song with really good lyrics, but their screaming and choreography took a lot away.

    Energetic and entertaining

by JoeSwick on 12/25/14Signature Theatre - Arlington

Diner - held true to the storyline of the movie, the musical was a fun time for our group who lived that era. Super young Broadway talent on stage kept things moving along to the beat of 50's style tunes. A few of the Sheryl Crow numbers had good style, and sound. A lot of the story was told with lyrics, adding to the flow and pace. Signature Max theater provides a nice intimate setting. Nothing like sitting in Row A so close to the actors. Matthew James Thomas was an energetic star, and maybe the next Kevin Bacon and his strip down to his skivvies at the Manger was nearly over the top at the close of the first act. I would prefer a better Act 1 exit. Derek Klena has the potential to be an intimate stage performer. The young ladies did well. No regrets, if you can still get tickets Go see Diner.

Diner had me smiling, laughing or reminiscent by the spontaneous actions of the cast and the way that the music and lyrics fit the scenes and time period of the play. It had excellent clarity and was to the point . I wasn't left wondering what or why at any point throughout.

    DINER IS FANTASTIC

by Anonymous on 12/17/14Signature Theatre - Arlington

Withou a doubt this production should be on Broadway. The show, the characters, and the theater portrayed the movie in an outstanding musical version.

Good start on the way to Broadway

by Fortlauderdalejim on 12/17/14Signature Theatre - Arlington

An out-of-town trial for a Broadway-bound musical. As of right now, the show is a bit too diffuse; when it breaks away from the five Diner guys, it looses some of its potential impact. Performances from all five guys are excellent, with Adam Kantor and Josh Grisetti as stand-outs. Score is a bit uneven, especially for the female cast members, but musically captures the time and place. Script tries a bit too hard to incorporate everything from the movie; a bit of editing would help. One new scene between Eddie and Elyse is especially effective but really needs a song for Eddie, or a duet for the two of them. Show moves quickly, is well designed, and has excellent potential if it plays in an intimate environment.

    Diner

by Riskitnow on 12/14/14Signature Theatre - Arlington

Delightful show, great voices, sorrowful song from Beth (but really well done), fun dancing, upbeat, time capsule with perspective from the narrator from today's view. Wasn't sure what to expect and really enjoyed myself - every seat at Signature is a good one.
