    Diner The Musical hit!

by geographygirl on 1/21/15Signature Theatre - Arlington

The second half was much better than the first half, the ensemble cast really pumped up the energy level in the second half. The female leads had outstanding voices, far out sang the five male leads. As a whole the setting, costumes, choreography and presentation were fantastic. I saw the movie so I knew the gist of the story line. My only complaint is that the venue was far too small for the story line and stage presentation. You could hear the actors and prop directors backstage moving around and it was distracting. I sat in the front row and the diner which was a character in the musical as well took up the entire stage so the actors had to be careful dancing and moving around. On Broadway or like at the Kennedy center this would not be a problem.

    disappointed

by baltoborn on 1/20/15Signature Theatre - Arlington

Maybe my expectations for this show were too high. Diner is one of my favorite movies, and in fairness, the show is mostly true to the movie. But it just doesn't click, and I think it is because of the music. There are only 2 or 3 numbers that really work -- Please Be There, sung by Billy, and the very energetic rock 'n' roll number in act 2. The rest seem out of place, or overblown, or just not very good. They are definitely not Broadway quality. There is also an emphasis on the role and place of women in the 1950's that is made much too important thematically and in the musical numbers devoted to it. Yes, women were expressing some dissatisfaction with their roles in life, but this is a show about the guys. When the guys are on stage, the show moves. When it's about the women, it gets whiny and slows down. All of the performers, especially the 6 guys in the leading roles, are very good. The guy who plays Boogie really reminded me of the tender, sexy young Mickey Rourke. The older Boogie was okay as a narrative device, but it started to feel intrusive. All in all, not as great as I wanted it to be.

High-school quality. Individual songs were fine but as a group the actors were yelling.

Overall a quality performance. Good music, all strong performers with great voices, nice set. Choreography could have been stepped up a notch.

One of best musicals I've seen including NY. Cast is talented and energetic. Music is original, a rarity. A perfect show!

A fun trip to the Diner

by MDTheatreGeek on 1/14/15Signature Theatre - Arlington

Diner at Signature was faithful, for the most part, to the movie. It was a fun and moving experience. Sheryl Crowe's music was a pastiche of 50's tunes with a country/rock contemporary twist and worked well for the story, moving the plot along as needed. The band was fine but could use a few more members, especially if this project moves forward to a larger venue. I suggest an effort be made to make the lyrics more understandable (diction!). An example is that we could not understand the words to "Tear Down This House", which came at an important time in the story. Also, the men could use more Baltimore attitude. As it was, the diner could have been anywhere.

Excellent score by Sheryl Crow. Engaging performers. The book needs some work but I am very optimistic that this show will evolve into a big hit. Again, Crow's music and lyrics are just super!

    Tepid Diner

by CFinDC on 1/12/15Signature Theatre - Arlington

What a disappointment. Diner seemed like a great vehicle to turn into a musical, but the result was tepid at best. Music was unforgettable, the Older Boogie as narrator structure seemed to hurt rather than help by telling rather than showing, which we all learned in creative writing class leads to a flat story. Talented cast, but so-so material. On the technical side, the sound was poorly balanced - the band was way too loud and overwhelmed the singers, and the body mica were way too visible.

Great original music. Wish the orchestra was visible -- they were amazing.

    A Great Evening

    by Fenwick2 on 1/10/15Signature Theatre - Arlington

We were completely entertained. The show was excellent. The performers were all terrific singers. The choreography was tremendous. There was a lot of energy throughout the show as the music was perfect in moving the story along. We felt like the time flew by as the songs really seemed to fit the story. We had loved the movie, and the show at Signature Theatre was every bit as good. We hope that it is able to continue on and that it would be a great hit on Broadway.

    Diner

by Candypopcorndietcoke on 1/9/15Signature Theatre - Arlington

I loved the show because I grew up in Baltimore during that time. I knew Boogie and I think Modell. Barry Levenson went to my high school. I was surprised that the show opened in Virginia instead of NYC. I thought it dragged a little bit. Yes, all the siding salesmen went to the Diner, I also thought that the dancing was not the Baltimore style jitterbug. The choreographer used the Lindy style instead. I thought it was very entertaining..

Diner could be finer but it's worth your time

by Signaturenewbie on 1/7/15Signature Theatre - Arlington

This musical twist on the classic film was a bit rough around the edges on our visit. Still, a little polish is all this show needs to stand tall on Broadway. The score is outstanding with several memorable tunes ably delivered by a well-rounded cast. The soulful "Tear Down This House" and rollicking "You've Got A Lot To Learn" are two of several superb melodies with equally clever lyrics. The cast ranges from competent to excellent with a couple of true standouts-- the most notable being Erika Henningsen whose voice and performance were virtually flawless on our visit. The delayed debut has clearly allowed all involved to take a deep breath and refine this well-crafted production. The storyline may be a bit predictable but remains satisfying. Staging, sets and choreography are creative, thoughtful and appropriate. Overall a worthwhile addition to the Signature's season. Get a ticket if you can.

    Diner was fantastic!

    by Boo3132 on 1/7/15Signature Theatre - Arlington

My husband and I loved the music and, even though the story and stereotypes are dated, it still seemed relevant somehow. Each member of the cast was excellent and, as a group, they were very high energy. It seemed as if they were truly having fun, which made the show fun to watch. The set was also fantastic, particularly the way the small space was used.

    Diner was great!

by freddyes on 1/6/15Signature Theatre - Arlington

Just saw the new musical Diner. Very enjoyable. Terrific songs by Sheryl Crow. Excellent and very talented cast. A smile from start to finish. Still needs a bit of tightening up if it is to make it on Broadway but definitely has that potential.

Easily Signature's BEST Production in Years!

    by MarkNYC64 on 1/5/15Signature Theatre - Arlington

Diner is probably one of the best shows I've ever seen at Signature in the decade or so I've been attending shows here. The score by Sheryl Crow is delightful and the performances are indeed "star quality." The six young men playing the leads all have NYC pedigrees and to be honest, it really makes a difference as the Signature repertory players are relegated to supporting roles. Also, Kathleen Marshall's direction is spot on and the energy never lags. If you see ONE show at Signature for the rest of your life it should be Diner!

    Fantastic Show!!!

by ShowsRGreat on 1/4/15Signature Theatre - Arlington

This was such a fantastic show. The music was wonderful. The entire production was enjoyable from the beginning to the end. We came home and watched the movie again and decided we liked the play better. If this goes to Broadway it will be a huge success!
