DIANA KRALL IN CONCERT

Born in Nanaimo, British Columbia, Diana Krall grew up on Vancouver Island in the western part of Canada and began studying the piano when she was four years old. By the time she was 15, she was playing jazz in local restaurants and bars.

Ms. Krall was still a teenager when she was awarded a scholarship to the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston. After two years in Boston she moved to Los Angeles, where she first me her Jazz influences, including John Clayton, pianist/singer Jimmy Rowles, and Ray Brown, the legendary bassist who served as her musical mentor (and played on Only Trust Your Heart). Ms. Krall had lived in Los Angeles for three years when she then moved to Toronto, and it was a Canadian label that gave her a chance to record for the first time. In 1993, the Montreal-based Justin Time Records released her debut album, Stepping Out. In 1994, she signed with GRP and recorded Only Trust Your Heart, which featured Brown on bass and Stanley Turrentine on tenor saxophone and marked the beginning of her association with Tommy LiPuma (who has worked with everyone from Barbra Streisand to George Benson).

Diana Krall is the only jazz singer to have eight albums debut at the top of the Billboard Jazz Albums chart. To date, her albums have garnered five Grammy® Awards, 10 Juno® Awards and have also earned nine gold, three platinum and seven multi-platinum albums. Krall's unique artistry transcends any single musical style and has made her one of the most recognizable and beloved artists of our time.

  • Diana Krall - enthralling!

by dzynguy on 7/8/09Fraze Pavilion - KetteringRating: 4 out of 5

What an evening! The venue, the weather and a truly talented artist all combined to create a picture perfect event. And the supporting artists on guitar, bass and drums were great as well. I was a bit disappointed she didn't play more of the fav's from her original blockbuster album because I know she would've added her own creative touches to each tune. I'll see her next year too!

  • Mellow, romantic, and very cool

by Cincysly on 7/8/09Fraze Pavilion - KetteringRating: 4 out of 5

We drove up from Cincinnati for the concert, which was my first one at the Fraze Pavilion. It is certainly a small venue which made the whole event seem more intimate. The parking is right across the street and in a nice shady area, so we brought some snacks and beverages and had a little tailgate before the concert, watching all the people file in. Food and beverage at the Pavilion were simple but reasonably priced...two hot dogs, LaRosa's breadsticks, and two beers were only $19. (Try that at Riverbend.) The band (Diana, bass, guitar, and drums) took the stage a little after 8 p.m. to roll out a couple of upbeat, classic Diana Krall songs that I knew from her Live in Paris CD. The sound was great and I do not believe there was a bad seat in the house from which to see and hear. The songs ranged from a Sergio Mendez tune, to some Irving Berlin that you don't know if you're my age, to the classic Diana Krall that you know from her recordings, to finally an outstanding rendition of the Boy from Ipanema. The crowd was a bit older than we are (50+ couples and a lot of women) so there was no standing up, etc. This was just such a nice, fun, mellow evening. They played for about an hour and a half with one encore...the only negative I have was that they could have played a bit longer. I especially enjoyed the solos by the bassist and guitar. I would definitely pay $50 a seat to see her again.

  • Perfect singer and musicians in perfect venue

by Berries on 7/8/09Fraze Pavilion - KetteringRating: 5 out of 5

Diana Krall and her musicians delivered a near perfect intimate performance, befitting the beautiful Fraze Pavilion. A generally attentive crowd (despite the "late arrivers", which the Fraze staff incredibly allowed to be seated) appeared completely satisfied. A big plus was her willingness to share the details of her life (e.g., Dad's record collection and mentor Rosemary Clooney) and her visit to Dayton ("Culp's cafe has the best chicken noodle soup..."). We left feeling as though we had four new friends, of the greatest musical genius

The concert was great, my only regret is that she didn't sing more.

  • Diana was Just Amazing!!

by Yogibear on 7/8/09Fraze Pavilion - KetteringRating: 5 out of 5

The concert was "Just Amaging!!" Diana's touch with her piano keyboard was splendid, her voice harmonized wonderfuly with her piano and the band. And she dressed so cool! I loved her sunglasses!!

  • Krall seduces Kettering

by Delton on 7/8/09Fraze Pavilion - KetteringRating: 5 out of 5

The show was excellent. Top notch, first rate. Krall laid down some amazing sultry vocals backed by her very polished band that included Jeff Hamilton on drums, John Hurst on Bass and Anthony Wilson playing guitar. When called upon all 4 (including Krall's piano) could play with exceptional virtuosity, or lay back and let the slow samba beat and Krall's seductive vocal win the crowd. She mixed in some new Quiet nights songs with some of her older standards. In a very poignant moment she even played a few bars of the Jackson 5's "I'll be there" (the concert was on the day of Michael's funeral) before performing a tight Nat King Cole ballad. Nice touch.

  • doc, as in the 7 dwarfs

by sparkyg12 on 7/7/09Cape Cod Melody Tent - HyannisRating: 4 out of 5

she was very good but it sometimes was hard to hear her. i was really disappointed in the crowd--noisy, talked through the concert, annoying comments and loud. i hoped that Ms. Krall would have just not responded to some of the assinine comments from the audience or stopped the banter in some way. overall, the event was quite enjoyable and sheis a terrific talent!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Diana Krall is a great pianist!

by Marj on 7/6/09Cape Cod Melody Tent - HyannisRating: 4 out of 5

Loved hearing Diana sing and play the piano. I wasn't very impressed with the pre-show and wished Diana could have played longer.

  • Diana Krall is amazing

by nanaray on 7/6/09Cape Cod Melody Tent - HyannisRating: 5 out of 5

Diana just gets better with age. Her piano playing is outstanding and that voice has become so smoky and sexy. She reminds of the old time torch/cabaret singers. You truly get your money's worth with her show. Backup trio was also excellent.

Great musician! Low key performance, with great back up band.

Ok here's the deal, I have been to this venue before. I saw Michael Feinstein and Linda Edder here and it was an amazing show. Krall's show here seemed to be disjointed. I don't mean her actual performance, but more the coordination of it. The show was scheduled to start at 8:00 pm. It did start at that time with a warm up act of a very good guitarist who played for approximately 25 min. Then... The lights came back on... and announcements about enjoy the concesions. Diana Krall and her trio entered exactly @ 9pm. Diana was accompanied by her husband Elvis Costello who gave her a kiss and then she walked on stage and proceeded to to sit down and get right to it. It was clear to me that she knew she was late. My Feeling. No words. No hello. After two numbers, she did engage the crowd in a very nice way. She got some heckeling from one woman inparticular. She told that woman to shut up and the crowd cheered. Diana's performance was nothing short of spectacular. Her and her band are so tight that they read each other's mind's on pick ups, solo's, and all out jamms. It was some of the best jazz I have ever heard with some of the most brilliant anrrangements I have ever been witness to. I only wish I had been sitting in a little smokey jazz bar and they were going to play for 3 or 4 hours. It was that good. A little dis-jointed for the melody tent. Satisfied at the back end. Best Summer showcase in New England. Nimrod1

  • A not quiet night in Hyannis

by timothy on 7/4/09Cape Cod Melody Tent - HyannisRating: 5 out of 5

Smooth, classy, classic jazz evening. Sultry voice, exquisite musicianship.

  • Diana Krall was enthralling...

by melph1 on 7/4/09Cape Cod Melody Tent - HyannisRating: 4 out of 5

From the time she was led into the Cape Cod Melody Tent by husband Elvis Costello, she held the crowd in her hands. Diana Krall enthralled the sold out venue with a variety of songs that fans were hoping to hear from this multi-talented musician. She could be a star just for her piano playing alone if it wasn't for her dreamlike voice. This is the second time my wife and I have seen Diana live but it won't be our last. Diana was simply dazzling...

  • Diana Krall is "The Best"

by Oystrclaman on 7/4/09Cape Cod Melody Tent - HyannisRating: 5 out of 5

entertaining, funny, exhuberant and soothing are the words that best describe the performance of a very talented individual. The accompanying trio of musicians were spectacular and her piano playing is second to none. A MUST SEE EVENT

  • Disappointed

by phan17 on 7/4/09Cape Cod Melody Tent - HyannisRating: 2 out of 5

Looked forward to seeing Diana in person ... have 3 of her CDs. Unfortunately, the show starred the Diana Krall Jazz Band, with Diana piloting and playing the piano. The jazz band was good, very good, but there are lots of good jazz bands... and lots of really good jazz pianists. I wanted to hear Diana Krall, the singer cuz there is only one of her and she is great ... but, Diana the singer only was there for a couple tunes ... too bad.

  • MUSICAL DIANNA

by JANE on 7/3/09Cape Cod Melody Tent - HyannisRating: 3 out of 5

I THINK DIANNA DID A WONDERFUL JOB LAST EVENING. SHE REALLY CAN PLAY THE PIANNO. I THINK IT WOULD HAVE BEEN EXCELLENT IF SHE SANG MORE, SHE HAS A BEAUTIFUL VOICE, AND IT SHOWS IN ALL HER ALBUMS. BUT LAST NIGHT SHE WAS MORE INSTRUMENTAL THAN MUSICAL.
