About

DIANA KRALL IN CONCERT

Born in Nanaimo, British Columbia, Diana Krall grew up on Vancouver Island in the western part of Canada and began studying the piano when she was four years old. By the time she was 15, she was playing jazz in local restaurants and bars.

Ms. Krall was still a teenager when she was awarded a scholarship to the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston. After two years in Boston she moved to Los Angeles, where she first me her Jazz influences, including John Clayton, pianist/singer Jimmy Rowles, and Ray Brown, the legendary bassist who served as her musical mentor (and played on Only Trust Your Heart). Ms. Krall had lived in Los Angeles for three years when she then moved to Toronto, and it was a Canadian label that gave her a chance to record for the first time. In 1993, the Montreal-based Justin Time Records released her debut album, Stepping Out. In 1994, she signed with GRP and recorded Only Trust Your Heart, which featured Brown on bass and Stanley Turrentine on tenor saxophone and marked the beginning of her association with Tommy LiPuma (who has worked with everyone from Barbra Streisand to George Benson).

Diana Krall is the only jazz singer to have eight albums debut at the top of the Billboard Jazz Albums chart. To date, her albums have garnered five Grammy® Awards, 10 Juno® Awards and have also earned nine gold, three platinum and seven multi-platinum albums. Krall's unique artistry transcends any single musical style and has made her one of the most recognizable and beloved artists of our time.

  • Poor Performance

by Gary on 8/12/23Rating: 1 out of 5

Ms. Krall did not bring her “A Game” to Red Bank, NJ on 8/9/23. She seemed aloof and distracted and either exhausted or impaired. Songs were uninspiring while the lyrics were often undistinguishable.

  • Wonderful artist...but....

by Jack on 8/10/23Rating: 4 out of 5

Staff at MGM was outstanding, friendly and very helpful. A multi-purpose facility is not most conducive for a performer like Dianna Krall. I have been to nine of her concerts, and she will interact with the audience at times, but not in an on-going dialogue as some artists will do. Dianna's music was projected well but her infrequent comments were not easily heard. As observed at her past concerts, what she says is meaningful and at times humorous, but somewhat subdued. This venue did not allow her comments to be heard. Overall, great performer, great staff, facility needs an improved microphone for the performer. Still a great time!

  • Not a Usual Krall Concert

by Bob on 8/9/23Rating: 3 out of 5

Seen her several times before. The sound system was poor = we couldn't hear her talking, and her voice didn't sound as good as it could. Also, it was way too "Jazzy". Less drumming would have been better.

  • Resplendent

by Sarah in NY on 8/8/23Rating: 5 out of 5

Diana was resplendent. Audience loved her and she loved them back. Seriously, one of her best nights, and I've witnessed her and this current band a few times now.

  • Amazing Live Performance

by JazzHandz on 8/8/23Rating: 5 out of 5

Diana Krall and her band gave an incredible live performance. The acoustics in the theater were outstanding even at the top of the house. The only issue was there are no hand rails as you go up very steep balcony steps that are inconsistent in depth. Since the crowd veered to older adults there was so much struggling up and down the stairs. The great ushers helped each patron but they were also elderly so not a great combination.

  • Loved Diana Krall in concert!

by Pam on 8/8/23Rating: 5 out of 5

What a performance, what a night out! Her voice was crisp, clear and on-point. Her skills at the piano were exhibited in crystal clear ability - she just "FEELS"the music, you can see it. Her band members were so fantastic, too. Bass, Drums, Guitar - all great! Will definitely go see her again. Thank you The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, NY. Only suggestion I would have is that next year, she should be booked at The Beacon Theatre in NYC so more people can enjoy her!

  • The band was great

by Karen on 8/8/23Rating: 4 out of 5

Diana seemed a bit off but her band was excellent. People we were with had seen her several times and they said her performance had previously been so much better

  • I hate electronic tickets

by JM on 8/8/23Rating: 1 out of 5

I had purchased my tickets for this wonderful show months ago, and the entire time I had nightmare visions of not being able to access these blasted and expensive tickets. Indeed, when I got there, the usher was unable to acknowledge one of my two tickets and after several minutes, actually seeing that I really did have to tickets, told me to just go in. I told him that I never had electronic tickets before and that I hate the process. He told me that he hated it also. So here's a suggestion, I'm sure a lot of customers enjoy their electronic tickets. How about giving us a choice - both paper and/or electronic.

  • Awesome

    by 2pop on 8/8/23Rating: 5 out of 5

This was my first encounter with Diana Krall live. The quartet was spot on. Diana Krall's keyboard improvisation rivaled her vocal interpretations. My only critique is that there were times the piano became lost behind the guitar and bass. It was a wonderful evening and I am still smiling in retrospect.

It seems as though the years have not been good to Diana's voice. She is 58, came on the scene over 25 years ago. Her voice is thicker, a bit raspy at times, and more breathy though that might have been intentional. Her range is also not what it was, she doesn't attempt some higher notes that used to seem easy. BUT she can still really interpret a tune. The Tony Bennet three tune medley was tremendous. As always, her band is fantastic. And the sound in the Capitol Theater was outstanding. Its still worth going to see her (though not always at the prices charged), just know the Diana you're getting.

  • Disappointed

by Jazz Lover on 8/8/23Rating: 3 out of 5

The Capitol Theatre is not for people who like to be comfortable, the seats are very uncomfortable, I will not be purchasing seats there anymore. I have seen Diana’s Krall before, at The Beacon in NYC she was terrific, this performance not so. She could not project and was often off key.

  • Wonderful, Marvelous, Enchanting

by CZGE on 8/7/23Rating: 5 out of 5

Anthony Wilson and Diana were spectacular. The percussionist and full base members were very impressive. Missed John Clayton and Jeff Hamilton...however all-in-all a super event I am glad I did not miss! Wish the large monitors were on to capture that up-close-and-personal experience as the musicians immersed themselves in the evening of great arrangements! Diana...that smokey smooth voice and your masterful keyboard skill made the evening one not to miss.

  • Diana, Anthony Wilson, and entire quartet OUTSTANDING

by CZGE on 8/7/23Rating: 5 out of 5

90 minutes of outstanding jazz, classic Diana renditions, and a very chanting evening overall. Wish the cameras had been on to project the quartet to the twp large video displays. The up close and personal nature of that would have been spectacular.

  • Bad sound system ruined the concert

by JS on 8/6/23Rating: 1 out of 5

I was very disappointed with the sound systems at this MGM casino venue. I purchased expensive tickets, center section and we could not hear many words. I would not see any peformer there again.

  • Awful concert

by Flynn on 8/6/23Rating: 1 out of 5

Her voice was shot. Great musicians but the arrangements of the songs were so off to the point that the songs were unrecognizable. Each song was 10 minutes long and not a hint of melody. Truly one of the worst concerts I ever attended.

  • Not What We Expected

by Lin on 8/6/23Rating: 3 out of 5

Unlike previous times that we saw (and loved!) Diana Krall, she played none of her original material. All the songs were old jazz standards of the Frank Sinatra era, and about 80% of the concert was musical jams with her band rather than vocals by Diana.

  • Not my favorite concert of hers

by DKfan on 8/6/23Rating: 3 out of 5

Diana Krall is one of my favorites. I have seen her in concert many times and this one seemed low energy on her part. It seemed more like a jazz club performance with a little her and then spotlighting her group. On the whole, I wasn't impressed with this concert.

  • Fantastic performance!

by Laura on 8/6/23Rating: 5 out of 5

I’ve been looking forward to seeing Diana for years… she and her band did not disappoint!! And I loved the tribute to Tony Bennett on what would have been his birthday! ❤️ my boyfriend described the concert as watching art being “painted” as Diana led the different musicians into a masterful improve performance!

  • Not up to expectations

by Andi on 8/6/23Rating: 3 out of 5

Diana Krall’s voice is not what it use to be… limited range with poor breathe control. Arrangements clearly had created to masked these deficiencies with minimal success. Song selection fine but she did not sing a few of the songs that made her a star. The song selection for the encore was strange. Bass player was great! Drum also good. Guitar player spent too much time showing off his technical skills.

  • Diana Krall was amazing

by Roger on 8/6/23Rating: 4 out of 5

Great show. Rockcino nice smaller venue, however it feels like a corporate center more than a music venue.
