DEVO on Tour

Often misunderstood, but nevertheless iconic, new-wave synth band DEVO is back for their 2022 tour, marking their first tour across the United States in eight years. Known best for the smash hit "Whip It" (1980), the Akron, Ohio, band is slated to hit four cities across the country. The band has released 11 studio albums, with their debut, Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are DEVO! coming from Warner Bros label in 1978. They would go on to release five albums in the next five years; however, none were able to capture a mainstream audience like their debut. "Whip It" reached as high as No. 14 on the Billboard Hot 100, and the accompanying music video was received as a culture shock to the system, sending waves through the MTV generation, which elevated the band's fame. DEVO is heralded by their fans for concert performances that deliver high energy, alluring visual effects and innovative music from decades ago that still feels fresh.

DEVO in Concert

Musicians Gerald Casale and Mark Mothersbaugh were friends at Kent State University in the 1970s. The art majors, and another acquaintance, Bob Lewis, who was band-member-turned-manager became friends through a similar dark social humor that was often unconventional and offbeat. They agreed on a philosophy that society had actually been undergoing a "de-evolution" that rejected individuality or quirkiness. Thus, the robo-rhythmic group DEVO was born in the late 1970s, and with it a genre of new wave techno-pop. The group had their breakthrough with the film score for the local short, The Truth About De-Evolution, winning First Prize at the 1976 Ann Arbor Film Festival. In attendance at the festival were David Bowie and Iggy Pop, who helped DEVO secure a label contract with Warner Bros. Although their debut album caught on as an underground success, the group was also met with pushback. Some saw the band's non-conformist style as threatening. Rolling Stone magazine even labeled the group as fascists in an initial review of the album. Despite this, their third album, Freedom of Choice, and its premier single "Whip It" catapulted the group into the forefront of pop music as it was one of the most successful singles of 1980.

  • Disappointed!

by Kuregrl on 11/5/09The Music Box at the Fonda - HollywoodRating: 2 out of 5

While the Club Devo website now lists that the two shows in each city are each night playing a different complete album, I don't believe it said that when I puchased my tickets. I purchased based on night of the week, but if I had known that Devo was playing the Q&A album the first night, I would have gone to that one, as it is our favorite album. Instead, we heard the Freedom of Choice album, which was okay, we like plenty of those songs too. However, what was MOST disappointing was that the show only lasted an hour, and the first few minutes of it were 3 music videos! The encore was only two songs! When the house lights went on after that, I couldn't believe it! I felt totally ripped off. I will go see Devo again but I hope that next time it will be a good mix of all of their music.

  • Truly Worth Both Nights!

by CharlesFosterKane on 11/5/09The Music Box at the Fonda - HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

An amazing show - and unique opportunity to see Devo play through their entire album, which of course includes popular hits - but also the b-sides you've never seen performed live before! Great Devo costumes, videos and of course the hilarious man walking out with a Track # card like in a boxing match between each song. The band has excellent energy - better than bands half their age. Great sound, great lighting - excellent show!

  • de-evolution rules!!!!

i just didn't give the 5 stars rate because the set was kinda short (1 hr), but they still rule!!

  • De-Evolution is Real

by bigloaf on 11/5/09The Music Box at the Fonda - HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

Night 2 There was a totally different vibe in the crowd tonight. It is much more subdued. I recognized many of the same spuds in attendance for both nights. No yellow suits tonight. Tonight the boys were wearing classic red energy domes and grey jumpsuits accented with red duct tape, making them look like police officers from the future. Freedom of Choice is a very different album than Q: Are We Not Men?. It doesn’t have the rock energy but it has the pure, cutting edge, new wave feel that defined a music genre in the early 80s. Tonight I spent more time closely watching the band instead of spazzing out like I did on night one. This was the first time Freedom of Choice has ever been played in its entirety. The majority of this album never gets played live. Musically, the band was dead on. Wonderboy drummer, Josh Friese, was obviously loving every minute, Jerry was great doing “Ton-O-Luv”. Even Bob I and Bob II were smiling. Mark, however, seemed a bit off. He didn’t know the lyrics for most of the songs. He was obviously reading the lyrics that were taped to the stage monitor in front of him. I know it’s probably been a very long time since he’s performed “It’s Not Right”, “Cold War” or “Don’t You Know” but c’mon…he was aware that this show was coming up, right? Maybe he should have listened to the album a few times before getting on stage to perform it? I know every word on that album. It seems odd that the guy who originally sang the songs doesn’t know them. As with the previous night, two encore songs were performed. Tonight started with old-school rarity “Be Stiff”. During the second song, Booji Boy made an appearance to “sing” a long extended version of “Beautiful World”. Booji went into a long improvised discussion about LA and Michael Jackson. Then he proceeded to bounce hundreds of 1” smiley face super balls into the audience. Another short night, clocking in at an hour, but it was worth the price of admission to see these songs played live. Thank you DEVO. Duty Now!

  • Short but sweet

by SCinRB on 11/5/09The Music Box at the Fonda - HollywoodRating: 4 out of 5

Devo has always been a fantastic live band and last night was no exception. The music was tight, the sound was good and the band enthusiastic. They played the entire Freedom of Choice album from start to finish and it was great to hear the deep cuts performed live. The only thing that keeps me from giving a 5 star rating is the unbelievably short performance time. We clocked the show at slightly over one hour. Frankly, that is not enough music for the money. But as a loyal spud for 30+ years, I'll cut them some slack on this one.

  • Great Flashback

by Lumpster on 11/5/09The Music Box at the Fonda - HollywoodRating: 4 out of 5

The show was everything I expected the band played very well for their first time doing the entire album live. All these years later it was just like I remembered listening to the album over and over. So glad I decide to go, could not have imagined missing it.

  • Great show for all you Freedom of Choice fans

by LennieD on 11/5/09The Music Box at the Fonda - HollywoodRating: 4 out of 5

I've seen DEVO over a dozen times. Although I prefer their standard show, seeing them perform the Freedom of Choice album in it's entirety was cool.

  • DEVO Delivers

This band is in top form. Great songs, great execution, great show.

  • We're All DEVO!!

by SouthBaySpud on 11/5/09The Music Box at the Fonda - HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

Wasn't sure if this show would have the same energy as the 1st show since I knew it would be a little bit younger crowd and not as many hardcore Devo fans, but I was wrong. The energy was high and the place was rocking. Even the people in the balcony were standing up and dancing in their seats as compared to the 1st night where everyone up there sat the whole night. Anxiously looking forward to the new album and tour. The topper was Booji Boy coming out and singing Beautiful World to end the night. It was AWESOME!!!

  • Sound and Lighting Stole the Show

by BobBoston on 11/5/09Music Box Hollywood - HollywoodRating: 1 out of 5

I saw the "Freedom of Choice" show in Hollywood on 11/04. The bad sound was absolutely inexcusable for a professional band like DEVO. It was a great show if you like snare drum, cymbals and lead vocals - because that is all you will hear - and at an almost unbelievably high volume level. If you should choose to see one of the DEVO shows, you may want to wear welding goggles as many very bright strobe lights are aimed straight at the audience. Trying to watch the band was similar at times to looking directly at the sun at times. I'm a fan since '77 and have seen them 6 times but I must say that the sound and lights ruined what could have been a very enjoyable show. I guess de-evolution in production quality is real...

  • 30 years from yesterday

by DEVOTOY on 11/4/09The Music Box at the Fonda - HollywoodRating: 4 out of 5

I first saw DEVO live in about 1978 or '79 at the Santa Monica Civic. I was hooked. Saw them again about 1980, New Years Eve at the Long Beach Arena, about ’81 in Riverside, ’91 at the Coach House, 2005 in Agura Hills, then Nov. 3 2009 in Hollywood. I’ve seen many, many live bands over the years and DEVO is by far the most fun of all. I took my wife and 2 teenage sons to this one and they loved it too. (De-evolution is real!) The show was great as usual but I would like to advise the sound man (and DEVO) they could turn down the volume a little to allow more clarity. I am very familiar with all DEVO songs but needed to use my memory and imagination at times to pick out the Bob 1 great guitar work and mentally defragment and equalize in my brain what is normally very crisp music. The other 5 times I saw DEVO this was not an issue. My feeling and hope are…this was the first show of their tour and the sound guy(s) and DEVO will fine-tune this and the shows will be super duper perfect as usual. I met and spoke with Bob 1 and Mark after the show at the meet and greet. Thank you both for being so polite and nice to me and my family. And most importantly thanks for keeping it going and helping me keep my old age gene turned off. DEVO is Number 1.

  • by EvaF on 11/4/09The Music Box at the Fonda - HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

The only bad apart about this show was waiting for it to start. Once it did...it was fantastic. The guys sounded better than ever and they looked great. I hadn't seen them since the Freedom of Choice Tour in the 80's. This time I wasn't down in the pit jumping around...I sprung for the VIP seats and it was nice to be able to see them and appreciate their spectacular musicianship.

  • Devo! Awesome after all these years

by dolphinsjw on 11/4/09The Music Box at the Fonda - HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

We went and saw the Devo concert. It was awesome to say the least. We sat in the balcony where by the way every seat feels like the best seat in the house. Down stairs was standing only which isn't my bag but the people seemed to be enjoyimg themselves there as well. The band threw a lot of things into the standing audience which mas cool. We also paid for the meet and greet which was pretty neat as well. We got the signatures and pictures with every member of the band. All in all, a great experience. Alot of reviews I read said that it was filthy and the workers rude but I did not find any of that,,,,in fact quite the opposite. {arking next to the building was a but expensive though at $20.00 but if you are willing to walk a bit there are prbably other options available. Oh, I almost forgot....the balcony does not have assigned seating....it kind of works like a movie theater so it pays to stand early in the will call line....however, there really are no bad seats up there.

  • Devo Rocks First Album!

by Comicjim on 11/4/09The Music Box at the Fonda - HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

Caught Devo at the Fonda. Amazing. There were 30 years of Devo shirts on display throughout the crowd, many with Energy Domes... opening act was great! Very talented dude performing short set... Devo played through their first record "Are We Not Men?" from front to back with awesome energy... they had custom posters with venue and date and a shirt only sold on the night of that album's performance (they have poster and shirt for the "Freedom of Choice" shows as well...). The new CDs sound amazing! (I know I'm repeating myself by using "amazing" but that's really the best word I can think of... a fitting description!) They also had limited edition yellow vinyl records for "Are We Not Men?" and red vinyl for "Freedom of Choice:" which was cool, as well as Devo glasses, boxers and other shirts for sale... They did a few songs after running through the record, but not too many. It was a satisfying, AMAZING performance!

  • My ears are ringing

by Bruceski on 11/4/09The Music Box at the Fonda - HollywoodRating: 4 out of 5

Opening act techno DJ guy was wrong for this crowd. We came to see and hear guitars and real instruments! Devo was very enjoyable. The videos are still fun and fresh, after all these years. Volume was a bit too loud, too distorted, too much bass. Lost a lot of the nuance. My ears are ringing today.

  • De-Evolution at it's best

by Blackguard on 11/4/09The Music Box at the Fonda - HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

Devo is still an innovative and influential band. The show opened with the 10 minute film of "The Beginning Was The End" then DEVO came on stage to power through a set list of their first album, the classic Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo! to an audience of all age groups. All the expected DEVO performance trade marks were there except for the absence of their mascot Boojie Boy to sing the final song. The stage set was very simple six honeycomb shaped lights of brilliant intensity that changed colors with the song arrangements. Very Devo indeed. Devo kept the songs to the arrangements on the album and the only improvisations were short solos by Mark, Bob 2 and Bob 1 respectively. The show had great timing and never once dragged.

  • Devo still have it!

by Jeaneeto on 11/4/09The Music Box at the Fonda - HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

First of all, the venue was very small, which is good. I was sitting in the balcony and it was a perfect view and still very close. It was first come, first serve balconly seating which I loved and there was a bar right close by. Devo was amazing. They might be older, but they still have the same energy and sound like they did years ago.

  • Are We Not Men?

by SuperDaveM on 11/4/09The Music Box at the Fonda - HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

Having seen DEVO many times over the last 26 years an in various tours, them playing my #1 All-Time album in sequence was a show I've been waiting for impatiently for several weeks now. I was lucky enough to be very close to the front on the right hand side right in front of the keyboard. Those guys were hi energy(domeless) from the get go and never stopped. I actually saw mark knelling down between songs trying to catch his breathbefore Gut Feeling. Mark made 2 appearances out in the crowd and I was happy to do the wierd screams/howls with him during Jock Homo, and help rip off some of his radiation suit during his first foray into the crowd. They just ROCKED and kept the commentary to a minimum, which was unusual for Jerry. For an encore they played my favorite song Smart Patrol/Mr. DNA and closed out the hour long show (yes only an hour, but action packed) with Gates of Steel, a teaser for tonights Freedom of Choice show.

  • FANTASTIC show & fun

by leendadll on 11/4/09The Music Box at the Fonda - HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

GREAT show. The "Q: Are We Not Men?" album in its entirety plus 2 encore songs. I had VIP tickets with the band meet & greet after. The meet & greet wasn't well organized but I managed to find everyone but Josh (the drummer). I was extremely disappointed that only 3 of us were dancing in the balcony (VIP section) - guess we were the only hardcore fans in the crowd. Venue comments: Bar on every floor. Normal "club" drink prices ($7 for beer). $20 parking next door to the venue; $10 across the street. First floor is standing; balcony is seated. No elevator (I was on crutches).

  • Excellent

by Cookeetheclown on 11/4/09The Music Box at the Fonda - HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

Wonderful show. The only complaint I have is the show was so short. The opening act was pretty crappy, but it's hard to find a band to open for DEVO. Josh Freese rocked the drums as usual. The two sets of brothers sang and played guitar perfectly. It was a great night.
