DEVO on Tour

Often misunderstood, but nevertheless iconic, new-wave synth band DEVO is back for their 2022 tour, marking their first tour across the United States in eight years. Known best for the smash hit "Whip It" (1980), the Akron, Ohio, band is slated to hit four cities across the country. The band has released 11 studio albums, with their debut, Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are DEVO! coming from Warner Bros label in 1978. They would go on to release five albums in the next five years; however, none were able to capture a mainstream audience like their debut. "Whip It" reached as high as No. 14 on the Billboard Hot 100, and the accompanying music video was received as a culture shock to the system, sending waves through the MTV generation, which elevated the band's fame. DEVO is heralded by their fans for concert performances that deliver high energy, alluring visual effects and innovative music from decades ago that still feels fresh.

DEVO in Concert

Musicians Gerald Casale and Mark Mothersbaugh were friends at Kent State University in the 1970s. The art majors, and another acquaintance, Bob Lewis, who was band-member-turned-manager became friends through a similar dark social humor that was often unconventional and offbeat. They agreed on a philosophy that society had actually been undergoing a "de-evolution" that rejected individuality or quirkiness. Thus, the robo-rhythmic group DEVO was born in the late 1970s, and with it a genre of new wave techno-pop. The group had their breakthrough with the film score for the local short, The Truth About De-Evolution, winning First Prize at the 1976 Ann Arbor Film Festival. In attendance at the festival were David Bowie and Iggy Pop, who helped DEVO secure a label contract with Warner Bros. Although their debut album caught on as an underground success, the group was also met with pushback. Some saw the band's non-conformist style as threatening. Rolling Stone magazine even labeled the group as fascists in an initial review of the album. Despite this, their third album, Freedom of Choice, and its premier single "Whip It" catapulted the group into the forefront of pop music as it was one of the most successful singles of 1980.

  • Why Go?

by RTerrific on 11/7/09The Regency Ballroom - San FranciscoRating: 1 out of 5

Too crowded to see. Bad sound system made music undistinguishable from amplifying noise. Short uninspired presentation. Mechanical.

Blew my mind! It was even better than I had anticipated.

  • Awesome show

by UNKO on 11/7/09The Regency Ballroom - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

The show was incredible, seeing one of the greatest bands of all time performing one of the greatest albums of all time was amazing. A lot of bands that reach a certain age loose some of their passion but not Devo, it was high energy from start to finish.

  • We're all DEVO!

Devo puts on a higher energy show than most bands less than half their age. Prefaced by a hilariously sardonic Booji Boy video, the uber-punk/wave opening strains of "Uncontrollable Urge," had me at "Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeahyeahyeahyeahyeahyeahyeah YEAH!" The traditional stripping off of the TyVec jumpsuits didn't disappoint, nor did Mark's forays into the crowd for the call and response chorus of "Jocko Homo." Although the crowd was rife with aging punkers, Comic Book Guys and extras from "The Big Bang Theory," that only means that everyone at the show was there purely for the love of Devo and the belief in de-evolution.Of course any "performing the album" show is aimed at true fans, and this was no exception. I can honestly say that even after all these years, Devo still delivers... and then some!

  • Devo was GREAT

by Pro4ripper on 11/7/09The Regency Ballroom - San FranciscoRating: 4 out of 5

Devo was GREAT, but the room was WAY TOO HOT, the openning act SUCKED, had to wait WAY TOO LONG for Devo to come on stage, and Devo played for less then an hour. But they did play most of the songs that I wanted to hear, (MOST), not all

  • Fantastic!

by Pongaloid on 11/7/09The Regency Ballroom - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

Devo completely tore it up last night. I was so happy to hear them sounding so great on all my favorite songs. My first time to see them live after being a fan since the 70's. I actually arrived , in true devolved mutant fashion, with a set of very low expectations. I had seen a few lackluster live videos on you tube of late DEVO concerts and thought " Well I'd just like to see them live before someone kicks it" (myself included) From the first chords of "Uncontrollable Urge" till the end of , what was it "Smart Patrol/Mr DNA" or "Gates of Steel" that closed,-- I think I was in a manic blur by then-- I had a huge smile on my face and was laughing and singing along... and dancing / bouncing like an idiot in the pit. Thanks DEVO. We were all Devolved.

  • Devo at the Music Box

by Alioop on 11/6/09The Music Box at the Fonda - HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

Great shows both nights and the meet n greet was just as fun. The restoration job at the Fonda, Music Box, is amazing and the management knows how to treat the guests. I will return to the venue each chance I get and hope Devo comes back for some more shows there soon.

This was my first time seeing Devo live. It met all my expectations and more. Great to hear the entire Freedom Of Choice album played live. My friend I was with also thought the show was great. Can't wait to see them again.

DEVO can still keep that beat going year after year. They put on an amazing show as always. The venue needs to plan their on call ticket pickup better.... but other then that annoyance.... the show was one to remember

  • WE ARE DEVO, and we rock!

by bluemoon67 on 11/5/09The Music Box at the Fonda - HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

Devo was surprisingly outta sight! I saw Devo in South Redondo Beach years ago. That time, it was all about punk rock, and they jammed, but definitely didn't sound as good as Tues Nov 3rd at the Fonda. Back then we got up on tables and danced, and then kicked the tables over and threw our drinks on the floor and smashed them. The Fonda is standing room only on the floor, and crammed body to body. Good thing my date was there to lead me into the crowd and up front! There is a loungey bar on the roof where you can smoke, they project the show on a wall and have live sound from the stage, and booths and gazebos and dark corners filled with art and beauty. Love the rooftop! Smoking and other unsavory activities are permitted there, within reason, complete with uncrowded bar. Nice. The theatre itself is not what I expected of an old Hollywood venue. I'm used to the likes of the Wiltern with ornate woodwork and acoustics that will knock you out. But, the Fonda Music Box was ok, and very exciting as I haven't had to stand for a show in a very long while and inch toward the front, climbing through bodies and sweat. The bodies at the show were all my age and older for the most part, although I did see the young and beautiful on the way out. Anyway, DEVO! They did the first album, in entirety, in order, and I loved it! I always wish I could I could pick the song list for a show, and this song list was just what the doctor ordered. Fantastic. Uncontrollable Urge, Mongoloid, Slap Your Mammy, Come Back Jonee, oh man! Their last song was Gates of Steel, my all time fav, and I think that was on Freedom of Choice. What an ultimate ending. Great night, and the whole thing didn't last hardly an hour. The only thing that could have been better is if they had done the Freedom of Choice album next, instead of the next night. They nailed it though, and sounded amazing. The beginning started with some early video clips, now I know why they did that, to drag it out just a bit. I don't think I've ever seen a show where I felt satisfied like that at the end...I always think oh damn, why didn't they play this or that? Why? Why? When I realized I was getting the We Are Devo album, I enjoyed the moment. And I got my favorites, and my all time fav as an encore. Good form! Wow.

  • DEVO - Freedom of Choice

by ShelleyV1666 on 11/5/09The Music Box at the Fonda - HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

Great show! Buying the VIP tickets was the way to go; we received signed posters, aftershow passes and seats that i could actually see the stage from...any old school Devo fan should take this route.

  • Bummer

by Dahvo on 11/5/09The Music Box at the Fonda - HollywoodRating: 2 out of 5

Well, after seeing Devo since they started, and being a HUGE fan, the boys were less than stellar. They phoned this one in. They have been fantastic every other time I have seen them, but not last night. Perhaps it was just the L.A. crowd or the moron who opened for them that set the tone. The moment that was worth the price of admission was "Be Stiff" Just my opinion, I could be wrong.

  • Sonically superb!

by SpudMan on 11/5/09The Music Box at the Fonda - HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

Straightforward, heart thumping, syncopated Devo ! Hearing the entire Freedom of Choice Album was too cool. Cold War, Ton O Luv, That's Pep, Planet Earth.... all live was awesome! Yup! Peace, Spud

  • It's DEVO!

Went both nights. Thought is was cool that they did different albums each night. True and Hardcore DEVO blockheads. A sea full of dorks pogoing. I was one of the few DEVO-ettes. Loved every last minute of it.

  • Devo - Was It 1983?

by BizFam4 on 11/5/09The Music Box at the Fonda - HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

Devo ROCKED the Music Box at the Henry Ford Theater like we had gone back in time to the 80's! Lively, artistic, energetic, nostalgic, humorous . . . they were phenomenal, and I for one was very happy to have caught this band on their current short tour. DEVO'S music time travels and remains relevant even in 2009-2010.
