Detroit Lions Team History

The Detroit Lions haven't always been the Lions. In 1934, George A. Richards, a radio executive, purchased the Spartans, a team from Portsmouth, Ohio. After the $8,000 purchase (a huge sum at that time), he moved the team to Detroit. In only their second year as the Detroit Lions, the team won the 1935 NFL championship, beating the New York Giants 26-7 at the University of Detroit Stadium.

During the 1950s, the Lions enjoyed some of the most successful seasons in their history, winning three league championships against the Cleveland Browns in 1952, 1953 and 1957. Divisional titles came again in 1991 and 1993.

Detroit Lions at Ford Field

The 65,000-capacity Ford Field consists of 1.85 million square feet and has four levels of suites, a level of club seating, and a ground level designated for concessions and retail. It also has some of the best sight lines of any football stadium in the United States, made available by a design that omits the traditional club and suite levels, thereby lowering the upper level.

In 2017, the Detroit Lions announced a $100 million investment into stadium renovations. Updates to The New Ford Field included a complete overhaul of Ford Field's audio/visual guest experience with new video boards to ensure easy viewing for fans in all corners of the stadium, an upgraded sound system, as well as renovated stadium suites and premium club areas.

The Lions weren't what impressed me-Ford Field did

by RLOLO on 9/21/09Ford Field - Detroit

So sad to say that the LIons lost and this season doesn't look to promising. Other than that I had so much fun tailgating before the game, feeling the roaring energy of the fans walking into Ford Field, and the stadium is fantastic and I would recommend that everyone has to experience a football game at Ford Field. Looking forward to my next game.

From beginning to end - long lines

    by restoretheroar99 on 9/21/09Ford Field - Detroit

I think I spent most of the game in line. We arrived to the 1:00 pm game at 12:00, and we had to pick up tickets at will-call. We waited in a confusing, long, winding line for over an hour! We missed the entire first quarter! It was ridiculous! They only had 8 will-call windows open for the hundreds of people working. Then, once we got inside, the concession stands were not all open. The lines were so long and they ran out of things like popcorn! It was the first home game, how could they have not been ready? Next time, I'll stay home and watch the game. It was not worth it to go and not be able to sit and watch the game.

Lions Game was good experience not

by golflah on 9/21/09Ford Field - Detroit

I must say, the Will Call window was very unorganized and made me miss the 1 quarter of the game.

Ford field awesome, and friendly atmosphere

by Firsttimevisiter on 9/21/09Ford Field - Detroit

I am not a Detroit Lions fan, but came to watch the Vikings, Favre, and AP play. I was very impressed with Ford Field, all the facilities and the Lions staff as hosts. Even with a struggling football team, the event is worth going to. You'll have a great time in an awesome facility.

Traffic and Ford field staff awful

    by fb43 on 9/21/09Ford Field - Detroit

Besides the Lions playing as usual. Losing. The traffic was awful, parking in ford field deck not worth it and the price for the ticket to see the lions lose. All I can say is stay home and watch it on t.v. if you must watch them. Rude people and 1 hour 45 minutes to go 1 mile on 75 to exit 51 C. You need to be in the Detroit area at least 3-4 hours before game time or prepare yourself for the worst. I have never met so many rude people in the detroit area. You would think they would be happy for people to come there and spend their money with the city of detroit having as much unemployment as they do. I say never again. go see the tigers play. Parking is much easier, traffic is better and they usually win!!

    the experience was good

    by mreasy247 on 9/21/09Ford Field - Detroit

the experience was good but the out come of the game not so much, if only the lions would have won it would have been outstanding!

It was the Lions, but free food!

by Maskay on 9/21/09Ford Field - Detroit

Great seats, great views, too bad it was of the Lions, although it was a good first half. The "all you can eat" was pretty good. Only complaint was there should have been more selections (pizza, pretzels, burgers). But overall got our money's worth.

Lions vs Vikings (all you can eat pkg)

by solosheba on 9/21/09Ford Field - Detroit

Good value if you have kids. You can get hotdogs, brats, popcorn, nachos and drinks. We had great seats 6 rows from the field. Section 121. We parked at Greektown and walked down.

    Lions/Vikings

by DianeTILLINOIS on 9/21/09Ford Field - Detroit

Love, just Love Ford Field. Am a Chicago gal, rooting for the Packers regularly, and anytime I can see Brett Favre within a few hours of home I'm there.

Most predictable offense in the NFL

    by Roger17 on 9/21/09Ford Field - Detroit

Just as it's been for the past thirty years, the Detroit Lions have again managed to play just 45 minutes of a 60 minute game. For three quarters they entertained the fans before resorting to the same, time honored tradition of yielding to a superior team. As for their offensive firepower, it was up to expectations or as the Vikings might say, Yeah, they ran the plays we expected and that's how it was so easy for us to intercept three balls and hold the rushing attack to so few yards. I believe the Minneapolis Press said it best back in the old Barry Saunders days - we'll key on the draw play to Saunders. That matched up exactly to the Detroit News report that said, The Lions are planning to use their special weapon, the draw play to Saunders as a surprise feature in the game. Predictable? Yes, to both the fans, the odds makers, and their opponent. Perhaps with just a little creative play calling they might manage a couple wins this year, but only if they choose to break from tradition and actually try to surprise anyone. But it is a nice stadium!

    Lions Football

by bsturk on 9/21/09Ford Field - Detroit

Don't go. Same old sorry song. The ticket price and concessions prices are way out of line for this pathetic product. Detroit deserves better.

    My first NFL event live...

by Zigstoy on 9/21/09Ford Field - Detroit

It was awesome! We had a fabulous time. My children gave me the tickets as a retirement gift. I have been working 24/7 for the past 30 years and never took time for myself. Since, I retired this past spring it has been great reconnecting with my family and experiencing life. Watching the game in person far exceeded my wildest dreams. Especially, being able to see my team win! Go Vikings!!

    The experience was great

by Salsaman on 9/21/09Ford Field - Detroit

From ordering the tickets to leaving the stadium was a pleasant experience, easy and stressfree ticket purchase. I am not a Detroit fan so I did not really care who won. My girlfriend on the other hand was not happy that they lost, but was like a kid going to a candy store the whole day since it was her first footbal game. Thanks for making our trip enjoyable.

    ALL YOU CAN EAT

by jimlions on 9/21/09Ford Field - Detroit

THIS WAS THE FIRST TIME I WAS EVER AT A EVENT THAT HAD ALL YOU CAN EAT. I THOUGHT THAT IT WASN'T ORGANIZE ENOUGH, I WAS THE FIRST IN LINE 11:00AM SO AT THAT TIME IT WASN'T BAD. THE NEXT TIME UP THEY ONLY HAD TWO SERVERS AT THE COUNTER EVEN THOUGH IT WASN'T A LONG LINE THINKING WHATS GOING TO HAPPEN WHEN ITS BUSY. THE BRAKWORST WAS NOT VERY TASTY AND THE HOT DOG WAS SMALL ( WHAT EVER HAPPEN TO THE BALL PARK DOG ), HOWEVER I WAS ABLE TO GET FOUR ITEMS AT ONCE OR ALL THE SAME. I STILL WOULD RECOMMEND THE PACKAGE IF YOU LIKE TO EAT CHEAPER THEN PAYING REG. PRICE AT THE OTHER STANDS. THE LIONS WHAT COULD I SAY EXCEPT THAT THE LOCATION OF THE SEATING WAS NICE, I WAS ABLE TO SEE THE FIELD AND THE BIG SCREEN WHEN NEEDED.

Not a bad seat in the house!

by Bluezzylox on 9/21/09Ford Field - Detroit

This stadium has no bad seat. Anywhere you sit is a good seat. We sat near the endzone and were very close to the aisle. The viewing range was great and the temperature was just right! I always enjoy coming to this stadium to watch football.

    The Lions-Vikings game was fun!

    by Sapphire56 on 9/21/09Ford Field - Detroit

I celebrated my birthday at the game. I had a lot of fun, unfortunately the Lions lost. I would have given 5 stars had they won.

    Peterson played great

    by joe1906 on 9/21/09Ford Field - Detroit

The Lions played hard the first half. The second half was a different story. The crowd was great.
