Denver Nuggets History

One of the founding teams of the American Basketball Association in 1967, the Denver Nuggets franchise was originally known as the Denver Rockets. They preemptively changed their name to the Nuggets before the 1974–75 season, anticipating a move to the NBA (where Houston’s team already had the name). In their nine ABA seasons, the Nuggets made the playoffs seven times — losing in the finals to the New York Nets in the league's final year.

They were one of four ABA teams annexed to the NBA in 1976 and immediately were one of the most successful teams, winning the Midwest Division two straight years behind future Hall of Famers David Thompson and Dan Issel. In 1980, the arrival of another future Hall of Famer, high-scoring forward Alex English, began a run of nine consecutive seasons in the playoffs. Coach Doug Moe's offensive-minded squads made it past the first round of the playoffs four times, falling three times in the conference semifinals and once in the conference finals, in 1985 to the Los Angeles Lakers.

The team had only one winning season in the 1990s, but it was a memorable one. After finishing 42-40 to sneak into the playoffs as the eighth seed in the 1993–94 season, they upset the top-seed Seattle Supersonics in the first round of the playoffs, thanks in no small part to center Dikembe Mutombo's heroics.

Led by 2003 first-round draft pick Carmelo Anthony, the Nuggets reversed their fortunes to post 10 straight winning seasons beginning with the 2003–04 season. The Nuggets won their first NBA championship in 2023, led by two-time league MVP and Finals MVP Nikola Jokić, who collected his third regular season MVP in 2024.

Denver Nuggets at Ball Arena

  • Cold food

by Jeff on 1/9/23Ball Arena - DenverRating: 4 out of 5

The Nuggets game was great. I took my daughter and one of her friends. It was the first time for all of us at a NBA game. The seats were quite narrow but the view was good. The biggest disappointment was the food we got for dinner was cold. It wasn't enough to dampen the entire experience, but it was enough to notice.

  • Great Night!!!!!

Digital parking pass worked great! Digital tickets pulled up without a problem. Seats were just perfect!! Ball Arena is a great venue with great announcers. Nuggets are a delight to watch!!

  • Great game

by Kim on 1/4/23Ball Arena - DenverRating: 4 out of 5

They opened the venue just an hour before tip off. I know in the past, the doors have been open two hours before. We barely had time to go in and get our concessions and to our seats before the game started and we were the first ones in the door. We didn’t have a chance to stop at the team store and we’re only able to have one beer, we usually get two. The actual game was great. Ball Arena can do a better job of letting us in early like we used to be able to do and the fans can enjoy the full experience.

by Dex on 1/4/23Ball Arena - DenverRating: 4 out of 5

Good game the nuggets end up beating the Celtics.the game ran longer than expected but had a good time

  • Obstructed seats

by Deg on 1/2/23Ball Arena - DenverRating: 1 out of 5

Ticketmaster sold me obstructed seats and never disclosed that they were obstructed. Terrible to watch the game behind 2 offset pieces of glass and 2 offset railings.

Great time. Glad they won. Seats seemed a little tight. Pizza wasn’t very good. Sodas didn’t taste right.

  • What a great game and a great production

by SeanW on 12/28/22Ball Arena - DenverRating: 5 out of 5

We had not been to a Nuggets game in many years and they have really taken the experience up to a world-class level. Very festive atmosphere and a great way to spend Christmas evening with family. The lines for food were crazy long but everything else was perfect, including the overtime win for the Nuggets!

  • Exciting

by Ayree on 12/28/22Ball Arena - DenverRating: 5 out of 5

The atmosphere was good from the beginning to end. The team played amazing, and the fans were awesome, the game was jam packed. Simply Love My Time at the game

  • Couldve been better

    by T Dubs on 12/26/22Ball Arena - DenverRating: 2 out of 5

It was not clear that Section SRO was "standing room only" Especially since I had seats assigned when purchased. And no where was there a warning saying "these seats arent actual seats. The Nuggets are awesome but SRO is not.

  • Denver Nuggets

by peripherique on 12/26/22Ball Arena - DenverRating: 4 out of 5

Parking was kind of a confusing mess. Everything else was good. A nice selection of drink and food options in the club level. Announcer was good. Had a really nice time.

  • Nuggets vs Charlotte

by Missfitfun on 12/21/22Ball Arena - DenverRating: 4 out of 5

Just love the games at Ball Arena even from upper seats. Which there was a tad bit more space in each seat and the cup holders were deeper. But Nuggets always put on a great game and keep it exciting. Easy to get drinks and food too - not too long lines

  • Awesome

From the seats to the beats and half time entertainment, it was a great night and experience. I highly recommend going to a game.

  • Great game, too loud

by Loud on 12/9/22Ball Arena - DenverRating: 3 out of 5

The constant music is a touch too loud. I was unable to communicate with those around me.

  • Always fun

by Trey on 11/20/22Ball Arena - DenverRating: 5 out of 5

Even though the Nuggets lost, they know how to put on a good show. Go to a game at least once.

  • Good but could be better

    by Valdez0610 on 11/8/22Ball Arena - DenverRating: 3 out of 5

The environment was nice. Sound system was horrible. Need more fun activities with fans and Rocky like it used to be.
