Denver Nuggets History

One of the founding teams of the American Basketball Association in 1967, the Denver Nuggets franchise was originally known as the Denver Rockets. They preemptively changed their name to the Nuggets before the 1974–75 season, anticipating a move to the NBA (where Houston’s team already had the name). In their nine ABA seasons, the Nuggets made the playoffs seven times — losing in the finals to the New York Nets in the league's final year.

They were one of four ABA teams annexed to the NBA in 1976 and immediately were one of the most successful teams, winning the Midwest Division two straight years behind future Hall of Famers David Thompson and Dan Issel. In 1980, the arrival of another future Hall of Famer, high-scoring forward Alex English, began a run of nine consecutive seasons in the playoffs. Coach Doug Moe's offensive-minded squads made it past the first round of the playoffs four times, falling three times in the conference semifinals and once in the conference finals, in 1985 to the Los Angeles Lakers.

The team had only one winning season in the 1990s, but it was a memorable one. After finishing 42-40 to sneak into the playoffs as the eighth seed in the 1993–94 season, they upset the top-seed Seattle Supersonics in the first round of the playoffs, thanks in no small part to center Dikembe Mutombo's heroics.

Led by 2003 first-round draft pick Carmelo Anthony, the Nuggets reversed their fortunes to post 10 straight winning seasons beginning with the 2003–04 season. The Nuggets won their first NBA championship in 2023, led by two-time league MVP and Finals MVP Nikola Jokić, who collected his third regular season MVP in 2024.

Denver Nuggets at Ball Arena

The Nuggets play their home games at Ball Arena(Opens in new tab), which is a short walk from historic Larimer Square in bustling downtown Denver. The venue, with its sculpture-laden Grand Atrium, opened in 1999 as part of the city's six-year boom in sporting venues, which included new football and baseball facilities.

The venue replaced the venerable McNichols Sports Arena, which the Nuggets called home for more than two decades.

It was great! Great game and the Nets won. We were in the 5th row right behind the Nets bench and Ryan Ruocco and Sarah Kustok, the Nets announcers. The tickets were expensive and I think it was because the Nets had Durant and Irving when I bought the tickets.

  • Epic

by Barnett grind on 3/6/23Ball Arena - DenverRating: 5 out of 5

First time to a nuggets home game and it was every bit worth the money. The energy in the arena is a must experience.

  • Nuggets rtd light rail problems

by Bigfan on 3/6/23Ball Arena - DenverRating: 1 out of 5

Sadly, we were unable to attend this Nuggets game based on the lack of confidence in the light rail system running in Denver. We rely heavily on this public transportation when we attend events in Denver and it was not running the night of the the basketball game and our resources are limited so we did not go and will be thinking twice about attending other events.

  • It was a fun and great crowd!!!

by Kita on 3/1/23Ball Arena - DenverRating: 4 out of 5

It was a fun experience very crowded. Wish the seats had a little more space and every one not on top of each other. Other than that a great time!!!

  • Lighting, Experience, and drinks

by Lana on 2/15/23Rating: 4 out of 5

We have season tickets and overall, the experience is great. After going to numerous games however, we did notice improvements that need to be made or are ignored. The alcoholic drinks are ridiculously priced at $13-15 plus tip per drink, and $7 for water plus tip. Only 2 of the stands take cash on the entire floor. Personally I wish the arena would dim the lights throughout the game for a better experience for the crowd. After going to over 30 games, one of us finally was able to participate in something.

  • Jokic and Murray vs. Curry

by JR on 2/6/23Ball Arena - DenverRating: 5 out of 5

My Husband and I went to the February 2nd Denver Nuggets vs. Golden State Warriors game to celebrate his birthday. The game was all we thought it would be, exciting, fun, great seats and great fans. Even better the Nuggets came away with the WIN.

  • Awesome!

by April on 1/29/23Ball Arena - DenverRating: 5 out of 5

This was my first professional basketball game and I really enjoyed it! We were in section 376, row 4, seats 4-6. Although these are not close seats we could still read the numbers on their shirts and there was no one in front of us. In fact, the railing in front of us was low enough that we could easily see right over it. The music was a little loud for me but it wasn't on, of course, during the entire game. We couldn't stretch out our legs without standing up so we did that during half time. Overall, a great experience.

  • Fun experience

by KB on 1/25/23Ball Arena - DenverRating: 4 out of 5

We are luck to find aome reasonably priced tickets, not all the games have options that are affordable. Unfortunately, if you still in any upper levels the fan engagement is zero. All the giveaways, mascot engagement etc. is only focused on the lower levels. Arrive early so you can maximize your experience.

  • Absolute blast!

by JGirl on 1/25/23Ball Arena - DenverRating: 4 out of 5

We went to the game to celebrate our son's 18th Birthday. We missed seeing Joker and Porter playing. Unfortunate they lost by 1. If they had played, we would have won by 30! Too many missed free throws. The energy though! You would have thought we were fighting for a playoff game. 4th quarter rally and support was so much fun! Just too late to deliver. Murray felt it too with his final bucket attempt and miss. Was hoping for another triple double for him. Thank you for a fun night

  • Had a great time!

by Cathy on 1/23/23Ball Arena - DenverRating: 5 out of 5

Took my twin grandsons, a few of their friends and my room mates 8yr old. It was his first time, we all had a great time, despite being in the upper level.

  • It is a wonderful experience

by Candy on 1/23/23Ball Arena - DenverRating: 5 out of 5

I love the atmosphere its really wonderful. They have good food and kind workers.

  • Slightly Obstructed

by NoelJ on 1/15/23Ball Arena - DenverRating: 4 out of 5

Always fun at a Nuggets game. Only downsides were tv-dictated 8 pm start, and a slightly obstructed view of the court due to railings in front of us. Otherwise, a top notch event, and a Nuggets rout of a win.

  • Great night!!

by Tom on 1/14/23Ball Arena - DenverRating: 5 out of 5

I am so pleased with Ball Arena & Ticketmaster. Access to purchase Hdcp accessible seating was the best I have experienced. Often hdcp tickets are nowhere to be found or so limited that they are sold out. My daughters 1st NBA game was a memory I’ll always cherish. Thanks Ticketmaster

  • Overall great game

by Jaycee on 1/13/23Ball Arena - DenverRating: 3 out of 5

Besides someone seating in our seats the game was very fun!

  • Bball game

by KG on 1/12/23Ball Arena - DenverRating: 5 out of 5

Went to watch the Lakers play at ball area.. I just love the game of basketball.. Nuggets fan were lit and the stadium was great… one of the best I’ve seen

  • These seats were terrible.

    by C on 1/9/23Ball Arena - DenverRating: 2 out of 5

Would never recommend these seats to anyone. The railing was in the way (no indication of an obstructed view when I bought them) and people were constantly in the way coming up and going down the stairs. Section 326.

  • Great Location! Crammed seats! Fun Atmosphere!

by JMPB on 1/9/23Ball Arena - DenverRating: 3 out of 5

Great Location on the 3rd level! But the seats are way too crammed together, and the cup holders are not in an ideal spot for that. It's weird just how close you and your drink are to the person next to you. Nuggets games are always Fun! Even when it's a total blow out. Rocky is the BEST!
