Denver Nuggets History

One of the founding teams of the American Basketball Association in 1967, the Denver Nuggets franchise was originally known as the Denver Rockets. They preemptively changed their name to the Nuggets before the 1974–75 season, anticipating a move to the NBA (where Houston’s team already had the name). In their nine ABA seasons, the Nuggets made the playoffs seven times — losing in the finals to the New York Nets in the league's final year.

They were one of four ABA teams annexed to the NBA in 1976 and immediately were one of the most successful teams, winning the Midwest Division two straight years behind future Hall of Famers David Thompson and Dan Issel. In 1980, the arrival of another future Hall of Famer, high-scoring forward Alex English, began a run of nine consecutive seasons in the playoffs. Coach Doug Moe's offensive-minded squads made it past the first round of the playoffs four times, falling three times in the conference semifinals and once in the conference finals, in 1985 to the Los Angeles Lakers.

The team had only one winning season in the 1990s, but it was a memorable one. After finishing 42-40 to sneak into the playoffs as the eighth seed in the 1993–94 season, they upset the top-seed Seattle Supersonics in the first round of the playoffs, thanks in no small part to center Dikembe Mutombo's heroics.

Led by 2003 first-round draft pick Carmelo Anthony, the Nuggets reversed their fortunes to post 10 straight winning seasons beginning with the 2003–04 season. The Nuggets won their first NBA championship in 2023, led by two-time league MVP and Finals MVP Nikola Jokić, who collected his third regular season MVP in 2024.

Denver Nuggets at Ball Arena

The venue, with its sculpture-laden Grand Atrium, opened in 1999 as part of the city's six-year boom in sporting venues, which included new football and baseball facilities.

  • A Loud Win!

by Bill on 5/12/23Ball Arena - DenverRating: 4 out of 5

Everything is LOUD about Ball Arena as it should be…Loud Music, Loud Announcers, and Loud Fans! What concerns me are parents bringing young children into that atmosphere as we experienced right in front of us. A young girl couldn’t have been more than 2 years old. Along with her siblings, 3 of them looked like ages 4-8. Not healthy from a noise level and not healthy from a profanity level. In my opinion there should either be a warning for parents of young children or an outright ban of children under a certain age.

  • Awesome arena

by Brett on 5/10/23Ball Arena - DenverRating: 5 out of 5

  • Excellent

    by Chad P on 5/4/23Ball Arena - DenverRating: 5 out of 5

Had a great experience all around. Lots of helpful staff around. We were in upper deck, but still had a good view and screens were excellent at replays or zooming into the action. Getting in and out was quick and easy, and their entertainment throughout the breaks we excellent. Enjoyed our time.

  • Nuggets basketball terrific

by Lou on 5/4/23Ball Arena - DenverRating: 4 out of 5

Basketball was pretty low on my list of favorite sports, but with Joker and team, I have learned to enjoy the sport. They truly are a unified group with no specific display of "look at me" that you can count on with many other NBA teams. The atmosphere brings the game to another level and the Denver mascot, Rocky, can't be matched. The only negative observation that I can make is based on the fact that going to the Nuggets game is an event for all ages. Young children and teenagers are becoming more and more a fixture in the crowd. With that, I also believe that we have gone too far with the outfits the Nuggets dancers support and gives the wrong impression as to what our younger generation should be exposed to - no wonder that many younger women have low self esteem. I understand that it's everywhere, but why no take a stand and let the dancers shine because of what they can do in lieu of what the wear?

  • A great treat for the wife and I.

by Joe Haynes on 5/3/23Ball Arena - DenverRating: 5 out of 5

I think the Denver Nuggets games are the best, the customer service is top notch and the cleanliness of the facility is top notch. Looking forward to another trip.

  • Game 1, Round 2; Domination!

by Dr. Lou on 5/2/23Ball Arena - DenverRating: 5 out of 5

The Nuggets did not disappoint in game 1 of the second round of the playoffs. So many made 3 pointers, it was a magic night. Rocky even made the blind half court shot over his head on the first try, ridiculous!

  • Playoff Game

by Chuck on 4/28/23Ball Arena - DenverRating: 5 out of 5

The nuggets are great entertainment and Ball Arena is a wonderful venue.

  • Playoff game 1

  • Great experience

by Princess Grewne on 4/6/23Ball Arena - DenverRating: 5 out of 5

My first Nuggets game, great experience! Our only "problem" was figuring out how to get to a restaurant in the arena before the game. Luckily a sweet couple let us enter through the Lexus Lounge with them then a handsome, kind employee scanned our tickets and walked us to the restaurant. Nuggets fans are genuine!

  • Apple wallet did not work

by TM on 4/5/23Ball Arena - DenverRating: 1 out of 5

As instructed, I downloaded tix to Apple Wallet. Would not work at entry. Staff had to take us aside and verify tix. They were very nice, said it’s a common problem with Ticketmaster. So be prepared.

  • All was great with exception of leaving the venue

    by Bluebird49 on 4/5/23Ball Arena - DenverRating: 2 out of 5

I waited until the crowd was close to gone before I left the upper most level, I was 180 degrees from where I parked on the Camry lot, I had total ankle replacement a year ago and have had issues with walk stairs, I am taking PT twice weekly to get muscles and my gait back to normal. As I began my trip back to the escalators I was stopped by an employee almost immediately and told to use the stairs to exit the building. I replied I was a 180 degrees from where I parked in Camry lot, he snapped back at me and said the lot was down the stairs and it was right out the bottom of the stairs exit. I painfully walked down the stairways and exited only to see I was on the opposite side of the building near the Tundra parking lot. I was so disappointed in this employee who showed to empathy to An older individual with visible difficulties in walking

  • Too damn loud

by Monique on 4/5/23Ball Arena - DenverRating: 3 out of 5

Loved seeing the Nuggets/warriors but the music is way too loud! You can’t even talk to the person next to you! Plus the halftime entertainment is lame.

  • Great Game!

by Vicky on 4/5/23Ball Arena - DenverRating: 5 out of 5

The game was fun and the Nuggets won! Ball Arena is a great venue. Doors opened right in time and the entry process was quick and easy. Everyone we met was polite and helpful. Concessions were priced about as you'd expect for this type of venue, and there were many options for food and beverages. It is a Pepsi venue, so no Coke products (my husband's only complaint) and there was advertising for Venom beers but they weren't sold at concessions (my son's only complaint). The audience involvement activities were fun without being distracting. And the Nuggets won!!! An all-around fun experience!

  • need better vending

by lanceeee on 3/30/23Ball Arena - DenverRating: 4 out of 5

Don't like the vending this year. Near section 380, there is a Jamesen vendor. Having a specific vendor like that is to limiting. Also need more craft beer options.

  • Awesome Game

by Alex on 3/29/23Ball Arena - DenverRating: 5 out of 5

Had the best experience at the Ball Arena, truly well-organised event and venue !

  • Denver Nuggests

by Steve on 3/29/23Ball Arena - DenverRating: 4 out of 5

Game was against the Milwaukee Bucks We in a nest of Bucks fans. But the Nuggets were awesome and beat them like a drum in the 3rd and 4th quarter.

  • Experience was awesome standing room only not so great

by Bigdawf on 3/28/23Ball Arena - DenverRating: 1 out of 5

Standing room only isn't the way to attend a basketball game.... the section is way to crowded....

  • Family Spring Break Experience

by RLP on 3/28/23Ball Arena - DenverRating: 3 out of 5

Overall good experience. I have to say that for the worst tickets available they were very expensive. Nearly $600 for our first NBA game. Probably won’t be going back anytime soon or maybe ever at that price.
