Denver Nuggets History

One of the founding teams of the American Basketball Association in 1967, the Denver Nuggets franchise was originally known as the Denver Rockets. They preemptively changed their name to the Nuggets before the 1974–75 season, anticipating a move to the NBA (where Houston’s team already had the name). In their nine ABA seasons, the Nuggets made the playoffs seven times — losing in the finals to the New York Nets in the league's final year.

They were one of four ABA teams annexed to the NBA in 1976 and immediately were one of the most successful teams, winning the Midwest Division two straight years behind future Hall of Famers David Thompson and Dan Issel. In 1980, the arrival of another future Hall of Famer, high-scoring forward Alex English, began a run of nine consecutive seasons in the playoffs. Coach Doug Moe's offensive-minded squads made it past the first round of the playoffs four times, falling three times in the conference semifinals and once in the conference finals, in 1985 to the Los Angeles Lakers.

The team had only one winning season in the 1990s, but it was a memorable one. After finishing 42-40 to sneak into the playoffs as the eighth seed in the 1993–94 season, they upset the top-seed Seattle Supersonics in the first round of the playoffs, thanks in no small part to center Dikembe Mutombo's heroics.

Led by 2003 first-round draft pick Carmelo Anthony, the Nuggets reversed their fortunes to post 10 straight winning seasons beginning with the 2003–04 season. The Nuggets won their first NBA championship in 2023, led by two-time league MVP and Finals MVP Nikola Jokić, who collected his third regular season MVP in 2024.

We got there early so we could wander the concourse. We ate at Illegal Burgers which was super fast and efficient getting us our food. We stood by a table outside to eat and made our way to our seat. Loved the entertainment alongside the game and had a lovely (slightly inexpensive) evening

  • Nonstop action Nuggets Bulls

  • Worth flying in for 2 games

by NJ Mike on 11/6/25Ball Arena - DenverRating: 5 out of 5

In Denver for my nephew Thomas' 30th and came early and left late to see my favorite team twice and best player in NBA. I was not disappointed! The staff were great and so was the entertainment. The only weird disappointment was i went to Mountain restaurant both nights. First night they let me into arena at 5:30 from there. On Monday it was after 6pm!!! Only an hour b4 game time 😞. Everything thing else was 🔥. Im very happy they finally got some more great players on the team. Probably better than the championship year. Loved watching Aaron, Cam and Jamaal coming out early to put in some extra work. Definitely need at least 2 Nuggets on All Stars this year. I hope the refs start calling more fouls on our behalf.

  • Love an NBA game

We had a great time at the Nuggets-Suns game. Great energy. Great atmosphere. I wish the tickets weren't so expensive.

  • Awesome, high-energy environment!

by GC on 10/28/25Ball Arena - DenverRating: 5 out of 5

The Nuggets and Ball Arena know how to do it right. We had solid seats behind the team bench, but looking around there didn’t appear to be a bad seat in the house. Fans are engaged, interacted with, they keep the energy up, and the food and drink choices are solid. We can’t wait for our next game!

  • Practice, we talkin bout practice

by Goody on 10/23/25Ball Arena - DenverRating: 5 out of 5

So this event was strictly a marketing event and not a practice. Maybe next year should be labeled as a fan fun fest or something but definitely no practicing going on. With that said, we had a blast and free parking even with the Broncos game going on soon was awesome. My wife purchased tickets to a game shortly afterward. We loved it-just don’t say we talking about practice.
