Denver Nuggets History

One of the founding teams of the American Basketball Association in 1967, the Denver Nuggets franchise was originally known as the Denver Rockets. They preemptively changed their name to the Nuggets before the 1974–75 season, anticipating a move to the NBA (where Houston’s team already had the name). In their nine ABA seasons, the Nuggets made the playoffs seven times — losing in the finals to the New York Nets in the league's final year.

They were one of four ABA teams annexed to the NBA in 1976 and immediately were one of the most successful teams, winning the Midwest Division two straight years behind future Hall of Famers David Thompson and Dan Issel. In 1980, the arrival of another future Hall of Famer, high-scoring forward Alex English, began a run of nine consecutive seasons in the playoffs. Coach Doug Moe's offensive-minded squads made it past the first round of the playoffs four times, falling three times in the conference semifinals and once in the conference finals, in 1985 to the Los Angeles Lakers.

The team had only one winning season in the 1990s, but it was a memorable one. After finishing 42-40 to sneak into the playoffs as the eighth seed in the 1993–94 season, they upset the top-seed Seattle Supersonics in the first round of the playoffs, thanks in no small part to center Dikembe Mutombo's heroics.

Led by 2003 first-round draft pick Carmelo Anthony, the Nuggets reversed their fortunes to post 10 straight winning seasons beginning with the 2003–04 season. The Nuggets won their first NBA championship in 2023, led by two-time league MVP and Finals MVP Nikola Jokić, who collected his third regular season MVP in 2024.

  • Ugh

by Nessa on 10/23/25Ball Arena - DenverRating: 2 out of 5

It was not a pratice it was more of a low budget fan fair. Very disappointed that the players didn’t stay out to sign autographs except for cam. And also they didn’t do much with the fans. My 10 yr old was expecting them to truly practice not a halftime show. Over all really disappointed

  • Great fun at the open practice!

by Shujean on 10/22/25Ball Arena - DenverRating: 5 out of 5

The Nuggets did a wonderful job interacting with the fans - LOTS of them - and having fun with Team Murray vs. Team Jokic at the Open Practice. Hands down, the most entertaining part was the Average Joes inviting (making) the rookies perform with them. The players were especially great with the kids! It was worth the drive from FOCO. Thanks, all! See you at the home opener!

  • Nuggets Open Practice Session: Not the Worst, Not the Best

by Chris on 10/22/25Ball Arena - DenverRating: 2 out of 5

First off, I’m appreciative that the Nuggets put on a free event for the community. However, as the saying goes, nothing is really free in this world. You still had to pay for parking and food. With that being said, I was looking for a more from the event. It said practice session but we didn’t see them practice and it was more of a social/trivia event. I think it was more so for the kids than it was for the adults (which I understand) but adults still are present. The players outside of a few didn’t really want to sign autographs and/or didn’t. That’s literally one of the main reasons for going, that along with showing my son how pros practice. Lastly, not only did the players not practice but they also took an hour to come out. The event didn’t start until 12 and most of us had been outside since 9. Again, just was looking for a little more from the events, since we’re all probably going to be spending more money going to the games this year. Thanks

  • Awesome Community Experience

by Shawndizzle on 10/22/25Ball Arena - DenverRating: 5 out of 5

I would say this was more of an event or celebration of the Nuggets and Denver than a practice. The team was so excited to be there and showed great enthusiasm and appreciation towards the fans. It made me really excited for the season to start. I think it was a wonderful way the team gave back to the community. For a lot of people there, this was their only way to see the Nuggets, as tickets are out of their budget. I think it was incredibly kind and generous for our owners to show love and appreciation to them. I hope this event continues. I noticed several items on the menus dropped in price, which I appreciated. Go Nuggets!

  • Open practice not as advertised

by Chelsie on 10/22/25Ball Arena - DenverRating: 2 out of 5

The event started 40 min late (it was clear the hype crew was stalling). The team did not scrimmage, which was the entire advertised purpose of the open practice. Everything was very disorganized. No one announced it was over the players just walked back into the tunnel and the audience was confused and finally just left. The players themselves were very kind with the audience especially the kids.

  • Practice more

by Mike Rivera on 10/22/25Ball Arena - DenverRating: 4 out of 5

I have a very fun time was very entertaining. I wish they would have done more practicing. Maybe some 3v3 or a better shoot out.

  • Waste of time

by Ka on 10/22/25Ball Arena - DenverRating: 1 out of 5

This was supposed to be an open practice, but it was a jumbled mess. The players didn’t practice at all, and it was really confusing that it was advertised like that. I wasted half of my day to go sit and watch random fan events, even though it was supposed to be an open practice.

  • Splurged for Suite Tickets….

by Leann on 5/14/25Ball Arena - DenverRating: 3 out of 5

I decided the day before the game to splurge on Suite tickets and took my son. The comfort of the seats is great and they provided snacks and non alcoholic beverages. However, I wouldn’t spend that kind of money again. My boy doesn’t really care what seat he is in, he just loves the Nuggets. I also still had to get the Tenders!

  • Always a good time

by DEshelman on 5/7/25Ball Arena - DenverRating: 5 out of 5

We always have a great time attending nuggets games and this was one of the best games yet! Easy parking (we have to utilize the handicapped lot) knowledgeable and friendly staff

  • Unforgettable

by French BB on 5/6/25Ball Arena - DenverRating: 5 out of 5

We had the best experience. It was game 7 and we got seats at a reasonable price for a playoff in the middle of our opponents,. We could not sit because the Clippers never sit during a basketball game but it did not matter because we experience the full experience. We won the game, Denver won the game! And I am hoping that we will be able to come back soon to support our favorite team the Denver Nuggets, it was definitely an unforgettable moment for my son that got lucky to get an autograph from a player and now we will cherish this moment for the rest of our life. .

  • Nuggs forever

by NellieM on 5/6/25Ball Arena - DenverRating: 5 out of 5

You need to take your kid to a game!!! We became fans when we moved here four and half years ago. And it’s been a constant in our life. We love this game, we love the players and we love the time where nothing else matters but the game!!! Best entertainment ever!!!

  • Neck

by Jamal Murray on 5/2/25Ball Arena - DenverRating: 3 out of 5

Two couples made out the entire bball game and licked necks. Weird.

  • The game was LIVE

by RaqSteady on 4/22/25Ball Arena - DenverRating: 5 out of 5

  • Fun Game

by Vicky on 4/9/25Ball Arena - DenverRating: 5 out of 5

The Nuggets vs. Pacers game at Ball Arena was fun and fast-paced. Our Nuggets lost this one, but we had a great time.

  • Fun for the family

    by Mae S on 4/7/25Ball Arena - DenverRating: 5 out of 5

Came from Indiana to see our favorite team. Ball Arena is easy to walk to from downtown. Game day email had all the information we needed to get around the arena. Had a blast from the moment we entered until we left at the end of the night.

  • Need better exits

by jrschrantz on 4/7/25Rating: 1 out of 5

Getting out of the building and especially getting out of the parking lot is a nightmare. I would say stay home and watch on tv but you have to pay $20 a month for altitude tv

  • From Srbija to Denvef

by Mico on 4/4/25Ball Arena - DenverRating: 2 out of 5

We flew from Serbia to Denver especially for the game and bought expensive front-row tickets! But we were disappointed that we weren't allowed to take our flag into the arena or take photos once the timeout was called! Everything else was great!

  • Phenomenal

by Brew on 3/31/25Ball Arena - DenverRating: 5 out of 5

Aside from being a huge nuggets fan, the atmosphere was amazing. The best game I’ve ever been to.
