About

DELBERT MCCLINTON IN CONCERT:

Veteran Texas bluesman Delbert McClinton is a talented recording artist who is no stranger to the top of the charts, but the real magic happens when he hits the stage. McClinton's hootin' and hollerin' take on the blues gets the whole crowd jumping at his live shows. His incredible harmonica and guitar playing really bring favorites like "Giving It Up for Your Love" and "Every Time I Roll the Dice" to life. Whether he's telling a hilarious story or sharing the spotlight with his killer saxophonist, McClinton is a gracious and authentic performer who always impresses on his unforgettable tours.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Born in Lubbock, Texas, McClinton cut his teeth playing in a bar band called the Straitjackets before hitting the charts in 1962 with his harmonica playing on Bruce Channel's No. 1 hit "Hey! Baby". He began releasing his own albums in the early '70s, finding his way onto the charts with albums like Love Rustler (1977) and Keeper of the FLlame (1979). A talented songwriter, McClinton also penned hits for other artists, including the 1978 Emmylou Harris No. 1 smash "Two More Bottles of Wine". He scored a hit single of his own in 1980 with "Giving It Up for Your Love", which peaked at No. 8 on the Billboard 200. McClinton continued releasing successful albums throughout the '80s and '90s, but things really picked up in the '00s when he landed four No. 1 albums on the US Blues chart and nabbed a Grammy for his 2005 album The Cost of Living. A gifted performer, McClinton continues to tear it up for fans whenever and wherever he tours.

    Delbert is always amazing!

by Rhonda on 5/7/19Birchmere - Alexandria

Delbert is always amazing and the Birchmere is our favorite venue. I have a daughter with very special needs who is a big fan and we always make the effort to see Delbert when he comes to the Birchmere. The staff was so helpful and accommodating making the outing so much easier for us. We appreciate the thoughtfulness and extra kindness of everyone we encountered. Sending me Angels, as the Delbert song goes.....He keeps sending me angels......

    Great Show!

by Leroi on 5/6/19Birchmere - Alexandria

I can't believe I've waited all these years to catch Delbert in concert. He can still belt them out and has a great band behind him, with horns, no less. He sang three songs on his soon-to-be-released CD and they all sounded like winners to me. I won't miss him again when he swings through this area.

    Delbert does't disappoint!

by TJ2091 on 10/9/18Ponte Vedra Concert Hall - Ponte Vedra Beach

Delbert McClinton put on a great show. Outstanding group of musicians supporting him. Dual drummers, keyboard artist, trumpet and sax player, as well as bass and lead guitarists. "ROLL THE DICE "was my personal .favorite. Ponte Vedra Music Hall is a GREAT small venue . My only criticism, show was a little short.

    Giving it up for Delbert

by Kipcat on 10/8/18Ponte Vedra Concert Hall - Ponte Vedra Beach

After the first song I already had my money's worth! The band was tight and full of talented musicians, particularly the female sax player and the 17 year old organ player/ guitarist. Delbert's voice is captivating with its power and texture. No one sings like him and his voice matched with his songs is perfect.

    Not the usual show

by Jamsam2015 on 10/8/18Ponte Vedra Concert Hall - Ponte Vedra Beach

I have seen Delbert 8 times over the years and Friday night marked the 4th time in this venue and he had always been better than the time before. The venue was great as always, but it seemed Delbert and his band couldn't get it over with quick enough. there was little interaction with the crowd and just a general feeling (by me at least) they were just putting in their time. Yates McKendree (keyboardist, guitarist and 17yo son of Delbert's regular keyboardist Kevin) was showcased and that was cool. Anyway I've never said this about a Delbert show before but I've seen better. But I'll be there next time around all the same.

Delbert McClinton is losing his voice

by RufTufCremepuf on 9/12/18The Cabot - Beverly

Annie Raines & Paul Rishell were amazing, we have always liked going to see them. Delbert, however, seems to be losing his voice, or, at least for this show. He was out of tune and couldn't sustain notes, and it detracted considerably from the experience. His band was great. I really enjoyed the sax player and the two guitars. But Delbert really needs to pay attention to recovering his voice - it sounds like he has too many vocal nodes, and can't produce any more. I have always enjoyed his music, and will continue to listen to his CDs, but the show was very hard to listen to. I hope Delbert takes some time off and sees a doctor specializing in vocal recovery.

    He's still got it

    by Bruce100 on 9/11/18The Cabot - Beverly

While his voice and growl have mellowed a bit, Delbert still delivers the goods. The band, as is always the case when he tours, is among the best that you'll ever see. His song selection was particularly good for a life-long fan like myself. Only Delbert could easily go from Lipstick, Power, and Paint (from way, way back) to Maybe Someday Baby, to Every Time I Roll the Dice, to San Miguel. Everyone ought to see Delbert at least once in their lifetime.

    He's Still Got Game

    by Fran60 on 9/11/18The Cabot - Beverly

From the first notes, it was obvious that Delbert had a miserable cold. No matter, he took the stage gave a full performance and no excuses. It was sometimes hard to listen to the ragged vocalizations as his sore throat limited his range severely. But, he has a dynamite band of true, talented professionals - just a pleasure to watch and hear them - and the show went on. For a man of 78, he gave it 110% and played his brand new stuff, his old favorites and I was indeed impressed with his vigor throughout!

Delbert at the Cabot with Annie and Paul to open

by Bionicbabe on 9/11/18The Cabot - Beverly

Outstanding. An evening full of superior musicians. Annie and Paul are truly gifted and got us in the mood with the blues. Then Delbert and his crew came out and rocked the house, By the end almost everyone was on his or her feet clapping, grooving and shouting out requests. He played all I wanted except Too Much Stuff. Left in a great mood!
