About

Dear Evan Hansen on Tour

Continuing a national tour that kicked off in October 2018, the musical Dear Evan Hansen is proving no less enthralling a cultural phenomenon on the road as it became during its Tony-winning Broadway run. Deemed "one of the most evocative portraits of the inner turmoil of adolescence ever put on stage" by the Los Angeles Times, Dear Evan Hansen moves audiences as no other play has done in years. A seamless blend of memorable songs tied to a grippingly dramatic story, this emotionally gut-punching tale of the socially anxious title character's duplicitous transformation into a social-media hero is a rare example of a wholly original modern musical drawn from real life. Conceived by budding Broadway songwriters Benj Pasek and Justin Paul — and based on an incident from Pasek's high school years — Dear Evan Hansen premiered at Washington's Arena Stage and had its Off Broadway debut at New York's Second Stage Theatre prior to its official Broadway opening at the Music Box Theatre in December 2016. Newcomer Ben Levi Ross, who began his professional career as the Broadway understudy for role originator (and Tony Award winner) Ben Platt, brings a different but no less moving skill set to his portrayal of the vulnerable and confused title character. Michael Greif, who won a Tony for his streamlined direction of the musical, continues to helm the production. Composers Pasek and Paul, along with book writer Steven Levenson, all earned Tonys for their efforts. (Pasek and Paul went on to win a best-picture Academy Award for their subsequent project, La La Land.) Songs from the musical — including Evan's first-act finale, "You Will Be Found," and his mother's second-act heart-tugger, "So Big/So Small" — have entered pop music's pantheon, and the original cast album won a Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album in 2018. Projections of phone and computer screens designed by Peter Negrini make the show a timely reflection of technology's ambiguous grip on our attention and emotions. Not only for the young, Dear Evan Hansen has something meaningful to say to all who've ever considered themselves "on the outside always lookin' in."

    BRILLIANT

Transported the moment the lights dropped. Every single actor was spot on. I laughed, cried and didn’t want it to end!

    So Timely, So True

by ROTCTEACH on 1/17/23William Saroyan Theatre Fresno Convention & Entertainment Center - Fresno

Well written book, even better score. Having taught high school the characters were easy to relate to. The only negative I could bring up is the sound was a bit over driven and I lost some of the dialog. Other than that, FANTASTIC! Well done sets, so up to date with the world today. Performances were spot on, great singing voices! and spot on timing throughout the performance. Worth the trip!

Sunday matinee, rain and understudies made for an unforgettable experience of Evan Hansen. The cast was so talented and engaged! The set was so unique and really enjoyed the day!

Poor lead and bad acoustics at the venue

by JR on 1/16/23William Saroyan Theatre Fresno Convention & Entertainment Center - Fresno

The lead’s (Evan Hansen) voice was incredibly nasally which made him difficult to understand, even worse when singing. Pair that with the bad acoustics of the venue and it’s a bad combo. Whoever was in charge of the sound also started off with the mics too low, then overcompensated and never really settled on a good balance. We left before intermission.

The Saroyan Theatre needs to fix its sound system.

by Kevin Harris on 1/16/23William Saroyan Theatre Fresno Convention & Entertainment Center - Fresno

The Saroyan Theatre is in desperate need of upgrading the sound system in the building, and there needs to be more captioning options for those who are hard of hearing.

    Dubious Distinction

by Natalie on 12/7/22The Orpheum Theatre Memphis - Memphis

The performances and the set and the music were great, but the story? Honestly, I cringed so hard through each individual scene of Act I that I ended up leaving the theater at Intermission. Sooo...Dear Evan Hansen has the dubious distinction of being the first Broadway show I've ever walked out on.

by Lisa Mc on 12/6/22The Orpheum Theatre Memphis - Memphis

The story line was powerful, the graphics were amazing, the music was phenomenal, the lead 'Evan' was meh. Maybe it was just a bad night or he wasn't feeling well, but he was just....meh.

    Powerful performance

by Theater Mom on 11/29/22North Charleston Performing Arts Center - North Charleston

I had only a vague knowledge of this play. It was emotionally charged and beautifully performed by every cast member. While the music was excellent, they storyline was beyond intense. Everyone should be able to relate to this story and take away a new perspective of life for a teen. It’s a must see!

    Everything I’d hoped for

by JLinc on 11/28/22North Charleston Performing Arts Center - North Charleston

I’d been wanting to see this show for a long time and it was everything I had hoped it would be - well acted (most especially Connor and Zoe), the band was amazing, the sets and lighting were spectacular - I loved every second of it. Even my husband who isn’t really a “musical fan” said he really enjoyed the show and thought the music was really good.

    Yes and No

by M. A. on 11/25/22North Charleston Performing Arts Center - North Charleston

The cast was great….Zoe’s voice not as strong as the others. Set was very modern. I could have done without all the beeps for a whole 1/2 hour before the musical began. That wasn’t necessary to get the point across (ie shorten the time for the beeps!!) Set very good & loved the orchestra/pit band.

A couple of the voices left a little to be desired, but overall they were excellent: Especially Evan,Larry, Alana, & Connor.
