About

Dear Evan Hansen on Tour

Continuing a national tour that kicked off in October 2018, the musical Dear Evan Hansen is proving no less enthralling a cultural phenomenon on the road as it became during its Tony-winning Broadway run. Deemed "one of the most evocative portraits of the inner turmoil of adolescence ever put on stage" by the Los Angeles Times, Dear Evan Hansen moves audiences as no other play has done in years. A seamless blend of memorable songs tied to a grippingly dramatic story, this emotionally gut-punching tale of the socially anxious title character's duplicitous transformation into a social-media hero is a rare example of a wholly original modern musical drawn from real life. Conceived by budding Broadway songwriters Benj Pasek and Justin Paul — and based on an incident from Pasek's high school years — Dear Evan Hansen premiered at Washington's Arena Stage and had its Off Broadway debut at New York's Second Stage Theatre prior to its official Broadway opening at the Music Box Theatre in December 2016. Newcomer Ben Levi Ross, who began his professional career as the Broadway understudy for role originator (and Tony Award winner) Ben Platt, brings a different but no less moving skill set to his portrayal of the vulnerable and confused title character. Michael Greif, who won a Tony for his streamlined direction of the musical, continues to helm the production. Composers Pasek and Paul, along with book writer Steven Levenson, all earned Tonys for their efforts. (Pasek and Paul went on to win a best-picture Academy Award for their subsequent project, La La Land.) Songs from the musical — including Evan's first-act finale, "You Will Be Found," and his mother's second-act heart-tugger, "So Big/So Small" — have entered pop music's pantheon, and the original cast album won a Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album in 2018. Projections of phone and computer screens designed by Peter Negrini make the show a timely reflection of technology's ambiguous grip on our attention and emotions. Not only for the young, Dear Evan Hansen has something meaningful to say to all who've ever considered themselves "on the outside always lookin' in."

    Outstanding performance

by Linda on 2/28/23Centennial Hall - Tucson

Dear Evan Hansen was an outstanding experience. Every performer was exceptional. Their singing was sublime. I liked the staging. The volume was excellent. Only minor inconveniences: the temperature in Centennial Hall. Every show I’ve attended had me donning a sweater or jacket and I am still cold. I’ve taken to wearing a turtleneck, warm outfit, and bringing along a shawl or woolen scarf. Others in my party do the same. The other is the long wait at the Women’s Restroom. Even with porta potties many were late after intermission and had to wait for a break to get back into the show.

    Outstanding!

by B’way Lover on 2/28/23Centennial Hall - Tucson

I didn’t have the opportunity to see this on Broadway, but it was always on my “must see” list. Saw it was playing in Tucson and went down for the weekend. The cast, staging, choreography and all other aspects of the performance were first rate and perfectly executed. Only sorry I didn’t see more than one performance.

WOW - I was not expecting to be so moved by the play and the music. Great acting! Excellent tunes! And the theme is something we could all remember - nobody should feel invisible. Well done.

    Incredible

Incredible performances by the cast. Innovative stage, I love when they incorporate the musicians on stage. Theater could use some updates, but all in all we had a great experience.

    Disappointing

by Cin on 2/28/23Centennial Hall - Tucson

The Centennial Theater has terrible acoustics so it was hard yo hear. This was exacerbated by the music being too loud and drowning out the singing. I only stayed for the first half, but was not struck by one particular song. In addition, teenage suicide may not have been a great subject for a musical.

    Moving, Powerful...and Relatable

by Dante Crossroad on 2/27/23Centennial Hall - Tucson

The songs are fantastic, and the level of emotion with which the actors sing is sure to elicit tears before intermission. My friend and I held hands during the second half because we felt it just that much! The lighting and blocking in the show add so much depth to every moment as well. This show should not be missed, especially if you're going through it in life. #youwillbefound

    Good but long

by College mom on 2/27/23Centennial Hall - Tucson

The music was great. But the story drug out without really contributing to the overall plot. We found ourselves checking our watches more than usual. The Performer who played Evan’s Mother was incredible! She was a stand-out.

The cast did a remarkable job and they were very talented! I love the message the Musical gives and the awareness to many difficult topics that need to be brought up and discussed.

    Dear Evan Hansen Meh….

by Virginia on 2/26/23Centennial Hall - Tucson

We left at intermission. Story was tired. Sound was terrible. Staging was good. Acting was fine. It was reminiscent of a high school musical, a little on the amateur side.

    Well worth Seeing

by Steady Eddie on 2/26/23Centennial Hall - Tucson

In summary, just about everything about this musical was excellent. The cast, the singing, the sets, and the performances. All though a bit of a dark story, it's certainly timely and provides some insights for all to be exposed to.

    Great show

by AnneV on 2/25/23Centennial Hall - Tucson

What an amazing show. Great music, profound story. I am glad I went out of curiosity. An honest representation of how social groups can get upswept in the emotion and take things too far. We see this in life too often. Jared's voice of reason continuously falls on a deaf ear. The actors playing Jared, Zoe and Connor's dad were refreshing to listen sing.

The touring company did a great job. Watching the play was unbearable…..they are so uncomfortable. Time to update the theater.

    Great performance

by Chenoni on 1/19/23William Saroyan Theatre Fresno Convention & Entertainment Center - Fresno

Actors gave their best performance. I wish I was sitting closer but from far away, they were so natural and they even made it seem that acting is easy

    Off pitch performance

by Roy on 1/18/23William Saroyan Theatre Fresno Convention & Entertainment Center - Fresno

I will start by saying this isn’t the first time I have seen Dear Evan Hansen. I knew what to expect and what it should sound like. I am also not referring to the creativity of the cast, making the song unique to them. However, singing off key and having pitch problems isn’t an originality trait. Evan was having extreme difficulty in the quiet or intimate parts. His singing at a higher level or in the ensemble was ok/acceptable. It was so bad we left at intermission. There was also this overacting aspect to It as well. It wasn’t the best. Very disappointing.
