About

Dear Evan Hansen on Tour

Continuing a national tour that kicked off in October 2018, the musical Dear Evan Hansen is proving no less enthralling a cultural phenomenon on the road as it became during its Tony-winning Broadway run. Deemed "one of the most evocative portraits of the inner turmoil of adolescence ever put on stage" by the Los Angeles Times, Dear Evan Hansen moves audiences as no other play has done in years. A seamless blend of memorable songs tied to a grippingly dramatic story, this emotionally gut-punching tale of the socially anxious title character's duplicitous transformation into a social-media hero is a rare example of a wholly original modern musical drawn from real life. Conceived by budding Broadway songwriters Benj Pasek and Justin Paul — and based on an incident from Pasek's high school years — Dear Evan Hansen premiered at Washington's Arena Stage and had its Off Broadway debut at New York's Second Stage Theatre prior to its official Broadway opening at the Music Box Theatre in December 2016. Newcomer Ben Levi Ross, who began his professional career as the Broadway understudy for role originator (and Tony Award winner) Ben Platt, brings a different but no less moving skill set to his portrayal of the vulnerable and confused title character. Michael Greif, who won a Tony for his streamlined direction of the musical, continues to helm the production. Composers Pasek and Paul, along with book writer Steven Levenson, all earned Tonys for their efforts. (Pasek and Paul went on to win a best-picture Academy Award for their subsequent project, La La Land.) Songs from the musical — including Evan's first-act finale, "You Will Be Found," and his mother's second-act heart-tugger, "So Big/So Small" — have entered pop music's pantheon, and the original cast album won a Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album in 2018. Projections of phone and computer screens designed by Peter Negrini make the show a timely reflection of technology's ambiguous grip on our attention and emotions. Not only for the young, Dear Evan Hansen has something meaningful to say to all who've ever considered themselves "on the outside always lookin' in."

The show was amazing! I took my 12 year old daughter. She loved it. It was deep, funny, and relatable. We both cried at certain parts. Highly recommend

    Incredible Experience

by Tom A on 5/13/23Landmark Theatre - Syracuse

I was really impressed with the cast of Dear Evan Hansen. Such a powerful story. Very intense & emotional but filled with some humor & tender moments. I saw the movie but there is nothing like seeing a live play. You really learn so much about the characters & what they were going through. How far will you go to be accepted?

    Great Cast!

by DeeDee Doll on 4/5/23The Plaza Theatre Performing Arts Center - El Paso

Wasn't to interested in this musical but was offered great seats at a discounted price. So glad I decided to go! Much better than the somewhat gloomy subject matter you hear about this play. The soundtrack was wonderful and the touring cast was filled with fabulous voices. Touching real lifestyle storyline with a surprising uplifting feeling. Coleen Sexton's song to her son was incredible, not a dry eye in the house. A perfect rendering of a mother's unconditional love. Bravo! To the entire show!

    Not the best

by Brandy on 4/5/23The Plaza Theatre Performing Arts Center - El Paso

It was hard to understand what the actors were saying and singing throughout. I knew what it was about but it was boring to me in comparison to other plays I've seen at the plaza.

    Great show, some tears shed

by Emily on 4/4/23The Plaza Theatre Performing Arts Center - El Paso

I'm glad I saw the musical, the movie does not do it justice at all. Language matches that of actual teens (plenty of swears and sexual refrences) and the topics are heavy, so don't take your younger kids like the lady in front of us with a very bored 8 year old. I shed a few tears and definitely enjoyed it

This one was even better than the movie. I knew that the musical was first, but I watch the movie before seeing the play. This musical is incredible, the acting, the stage, the music/lyrics, everything is phenomenal!!!

    The absolute best

by Tanisha on 3/18/23Paramount Theatre - Seattle

Dear Evan Hansen was an amazing and very thoughtful musical. Each character is struggling with something and seeing that collective grief and healing was powerful. Its not an easy play but its an important one.

    Wasn't my favorite musical....

by Lani on 3/17/23Paramount Theatre - Seattle

I was down on the floor (row L) and even from that close just found the singing and talking to be so quiet. At times I couldn't understand what they were saying. I knew the main performer (Evan) was replaced by the alternate and was a bit bummed out by that. Replacement did okay. It wasn't my favorite musical. I know the topic is heavy and was hopeful in some way that in "musical format" it would be more entertaining but didn't find it that way. Considered leaving at intermission but stayed.

    Can't Miss

by Jess on 3/16/23Centennial Hall - Tucson

I'm not sure how you mix tragedy and sadness with hope and humor, but Dear Evan Hansen manages in such an entertaining way. The cast and the music were absolutely magical.

    Absolute Perfection

by Katie on 3/16/23Paramount Theatre - Seattle

It's not often that a show is faultless, or that the touring cast is just as good if not better than the original cast, but the Dear Evan Hansen tour was all of that. Every moment was full of emotion, and the acting was such that it didn't matter that I was in one of the back rows - I could still see the comedy and grief as easily as if I were in the front row. I wish I could have seen it again immediately!

    Loved this show

by WYOPOKE on 3/15/23Paramount Theatre - Seattle

I saw Dear Evan Hansen last time it was in Seattle and loved it then. This performance was every bit as good, if not better than last time it was here.

Mezzanine level has loud fan noise.

    by S. S. on 3/15/23Paramount Theatre - Seattle

The show was great but in the quiet parts it sounded as though airplanes were flying over. Probably just a noisy HVAC system with loud fans but I won't sit up there again because of it. Took away from the show.

    Incredible

by Rachel on 3/15/23Paramount Theatre - Seattle

This is the 2nd time I've seen this show and each time I feel like it's crawled inside my heart. August Emerson was AMAZING as Connor, I wish his voice was featured more. It was so good!

    Marvelous! 👍👍

by GG on 3/15/23Paramount Theatre - Seattle

The whole production was a pure delight! The music, the actors, were awe inspiring. I went in blind, knowing very little about the play. It was funny, sad, dark at times, and touched every emotion. So glad I got to see it and will follow Mr Norman’s career closely!
