David Yazbek is such an amazingly consistent songwriter. Dead Outlaw is one of the few new musicals I've seen in the last 10 years where I left saying, "I'd like to hear those songs again."Really, the last cast album I bought for a show was another Yazbek show, The Band's Visit. The Dead Outlaw story is fun, the band & cast are fab, and there are twists of song styles sprinkled throughout to make this a very enjoyable time at the theatre.
Does it have legs to make it uptown? I hope so but the story feels thin. (That said, far thinner stories have thrived uptown.) From what I know, this is Yazbek's first musical that isn't an adaptation from a movie. I'd love to see a this original vehicle of his succeed so I hope he & the creatives can add some elements to make for a more engaging story. Also a bigger uptown budget will greatly help - the paltry set & props budget probably maxed out at $475. That said, whatever money was budgeted landed in the most important places: the band, the cast & creative team.
You've got one more week to see this and it's definitely worth seeing.
