Dead and Co.
by KateSSS on 11/1/15Times Union Center - AlbanyIt was a great show and the venue was awesome. No pushy ushers and crowd was really friendly. Parking was inexpensive and not a big hassle. Much better than shows in Worcester or Boston.

DEAD & COMPANY IN CONCERT:
Deadheads rejoice! The Grateful Dead have been reborn as Dead & Company, delivering all the groovy vibes and extended jams fans know and love. Longtime Dead members Bob Weir, Bill Kreutzmann, and Mickey Hart are joined by superstar singer/songwriter and accomplished blues guitarist John Mayer as they blend rock, folk, funk, jazz, and psychedelia to blow fans' minds with epic aural bliss. With their spacey instrumental interplay and awe-inspiring solos, the group organically weaves their way through audience favorites like "Truckin'", "Casey Jones", and "Fire on the Mountain". The long, strange trip is back on the road -- Dead & Company are bringing their positive energy and uncanny musical genius to ticket buyers everywhere.
BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:
The Grateful Dead were instrumental to the '60s psychedelic sound and hippie culture. Jerry Garcia (guitar/vocals), Bob Weir (guitar/vocals), Phil Lesh (bass/vocals), Bill Kreutzmann (drums), and Ron McKernan (keyboards/vocals) got things rolling in 1965. Excluding McKernan and Garcia, who died in 1973 and 1995 respectively, the core lineup has remained virtually unchanged sinc then. Many other musicians have helped shape the band’s sound as well, especially second drummer Mickey Hart, who joined the Dead in 1967. The band toured excessively throughout the ‘70s, ‘80s, and ‘90s, famously playing sets that exceeded the three-hour mark. After Garcia's death the group soldiered on, continuing to build their legacy through fearless sonic exploration. It was not until their 50th anniversary in 2015 that the Grateful Dead decided to retire their name. Fortunately for fans, their retirement was short-lived as pop singer/songwriter and blues guitarist extraordinaire John Mayer brought Weir, Hart, and Kreutzmann back out for more legendary jam sessions. Dead & Company continues in the Dead's spontaneous and inventive musical tradition -- just the way Deadheads like it.

Rich sound. Everyone is on. They're tight. Mayer is stepping up, and he can play. The drums are huge. Bobby is looking and sounding strong- awesome!
Simply awesome! Dead and Company had the positive energy of back in the day!
I was surprised at how good this concert was. My only regret is that I did not get floor seats...
Outstanding, so much fun! Band having as much fun as the crowd! Long live the Dead!
The band was fully energized with an amazing first set. We were surprisingly happy with the guitar playing of John Mayer (was not a fan before this). He obviously put in a lot of time learning the songs and practicing the style of Garcia. In past I saw Mayer usually play a Fender Strat but here he used a PRS with triple humbuckers and coil splitters. Awesome guitar! Mayer's voice was a bit weak but he made up for it with his guitar. Bobby's voice was stronger than I'd heard it in some time. Could have done without his wardrobe change at intermission and those white "yachting" pants he was wearing. The band was pretty tight for a "new" band. Actually enjoyed the "Drums". Overall good song selection. The only real negative was the hour plus intermission. Way too long and the natives were getting real restless.
amazing show, Mayer cannot replace Gerry but he did such a great job.
I thought the show was awsm. they sounded electric and John Mayer sounded great. They all looked like they were having a great time. Very pleased!!
Great show with the boys! John Mayer (I am not a fan of but... ) stepped up and did a nice job.
title says it all, john mayer absolutely tore it up, when you think about guitarists for a dead show hes not in the running but don't be fooled, he blew the crowd away, great drum solos, light show , all made it a great evening, catch the show if you can
Really, who remembers when the Dead played for free...Yesteryear! Still Worth it.
Mayer is a talented guitar player. His skills as a player transcends his pop music as he is a blistering player. Bob Weir has a relationship with Mayer as they have played together. If as one reviewer says you think it's cheesy, like him stay home. I sat next to a guy at the Dear Jerry Show at Merriweather who had a criticism about nearly every band. Wrong song, wrong band, wasn't the same. Ughhhh. Jerry is gone so it goes. If you enjoy the music you do so knowing this is not the Grateful Dead, nor is it being marketed that way. Go or stay home- the music never stops!
Before you write John Mayer off, google John Mayer and Bob Weir playing Althea on the Late Late show.
How sad that so many people are judging John Mayer based on a bunch of tabloid crap. I have been a loyal fan of his since 2001, and I've seen him many times. In my 40+ years of going to concerts, he is the best guitarist I've ever seen (and I've seen all of the greats!). Also, if you were to judge his personality based on the truth, rather than what you see on TMZ and other crap sources, you would know that John is one of the sweetest, funniest, kindest, most fun, and most generous people on the celebrity stage. His "ego" is vastly overrated by the tabloids. His true fans know all of this, and love him for it. And if you know him and his work well, you know that this musical pairing is perfect and a very organic thing. Why can't people be open-minded? I'm glad that so many Deadheads are staying home though... more tickets for me!!
Grateful for more shows! I think Mayer will bring it.
... these shows aren't worth it ... I'm going to the 6-night Phil & Friends run at the Cap !
