DAWES IN CONCERT:
Folk-rockers Dawes have picked up the mantle laid down by elite rock and roll storytellers like Bob Dylan and Neil Young. Frontman Taylor Goldsmith forges his own legend with his powerful vocals, poetic lyrics, and passionate songwriting. The rest of the band fleshes out his masterpieces, starting with the propulsive drumming and falsetto backing vocals of brother Griffin Goldsmith. Tay Strathairn throws in elegiac keyboard flourishes, while bassist Wylie Gerber drops in smooth melodies on the low end. Ticket buyers will love the nods to classic rock, country, and folk, even as Dawes brings their own contemporary flare to stages across North America.
BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:
The roots of Los Angeles folk-rockers Dawes lie in the post-punk band Simon Dawes, the high school project of vocalists/guitarists Taylor Goldsmith and Blake Mills. The group grew to include Wylie Gelber on bass and Taylor’s brother Griffin on drums, though Mills left shortly after their 2006 debut Carnivore. As the sole voice and songwriter in the band, Goldsmith regrouped and added keyboardist Alex Casnoff. Rechristened as Dawes, the group began to explore a more folk-oriented sound with their 2009 debut North Hills, which was praised by critics for its unique and refreshing blend of familiar folk elements. The band made their national television debut on The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson the following year before kicking off a co-headlining tour with Blitzen Trapper. Before the release of their 2013 album Stories Don’t End, Tay Strathairn replaced Casnoff on keys and added an even more dynamic sound to the group’s roster. In 2015 Dawes issued their fourth album All Your Favorite Bands, an acclaimed release that has cemented Dawes as a group to watch for both their stellar recorded output and their passionate live performances.

These guys are great entertainers. The performance was technically virtuosic, yet completely heartfelt and genuine. Can't wait to see them again!
If you ever wanted to experience a love affair between a crowd at First Ave and a band that loves them back, you should have been there! I saw cartoon hearts and stars flying back n forth from the stage for almost 2 hours. The crowd knew most of the songs and happily bellowed them with authority. This is the third time I've seen these guys, they opened for Edward Sharpe last year, introducing themselves. When they played at Taste of MN to the same adoring fans, they proudly announced their "first big one" in November at First Avenue. A personal invitation was extended to each person there, and I'm pretty certain EVERYONE showed up. What a fun night! The music was incredible, the atmosphere cheerful and welcoming, the band was on fire! The boys announced an upcoming cd, i can hardly wait. Thanks to The Current for turning the Twin Cities into this lovefest and playing Dawes. ....to the band, please come back soon. This is your home, now!
Great band. Great music. I see them everytime they come to town.
Best live show i have ever seen! Both opening acts were great especially peter wolf crier and Dawes played amazingly well. I would definitely go see them again if they were to come back.
What a good show! The lead singer and guitar player will be a star for sure. He has it all. The songs were great. I can't wait for the next album!
Best rock concert I've been to within the past year. Hands down.
Great show at First Ave. in Minneapolis on Thursday night. Wonderful energy and passion before a sold-out crowd. Heart-breaking lyrics and transcendent harmonies - these guys are for real, and one to see every time they are in town. Three or four songs from an upcoming new album this Spring were among their strongest songs, and I love their current one. Don't miss them!
Dawes knows how to please a crowd. They have real lyrics and put a lot of energy into their music. They really know how to rock out each and every song. All their solos and harmonies are unbelievable!
3 acts . moondoggies, peter wolf crier, dawes. all were fantastic. dawes really loved the huge crowd that attended. said it was the largest that they had played for(that had come just for them). they fed off the crowd. pwc is a local fave. the drummers from dawes and pwc have the most amazing facial expressions and totally love what they are doing.
One of the best shows I've ever seen! So much energy from both the band and crowd. When they played "When My Time Comes," it felt like a scene from the movie with the whole crowd singing along at the top of their lungs! It will be the kind of show that I will tell my children about one day. Dawes, thank you.
They are amazing, they played for a while and they played even better than the original versions.
Dawes puts on a good show - better than expected and very entertaining. Nice riffs and musical interludes.
as good as it gets. Best show I have seen in a long time.
I have seen Dawes play live three times and every single show has been exceptional.
dawes are very lively while singing, they really feel their songs. and webster hall is, as always, an awesome venue, small enough to create a sense of intimacy with the band.
This will be one of the last time this band will play such a small intimate room. If Saturday's perfomance said anything, it was that they are going to blow up
Dawes started out strong, seemed to lose the crowd in the middle, and then brought us back in at the end. The lyrics for two of the "new" songs - "Fire Away" and "A Little Bit of Everything" - were a little too cheesy for my liking, but everyone else seemed to like it. I think they are a good band with a lot of potential, but they're young and just not there yet.
Simply put, Dawes is the best live show you could attend these days. This is the second time I've seen Dawes live and they have been mindblowing both times. The level of on-stage energy that they emit is just incredible. Taylor Goldsmith is running around the stage delivering insane guitar solos throughout the whole show. The band strikes an interesting balance between straight up rock n' roll and folk. The lyrics are absolutely beautiful. Learn them before going to the concert so you can sing along.
Dawes puts on an excellent show. Very high-energy! The sound is great.
