DAWES IN CONCERT:
Folk-rockers Dawes have picked up the mantle laid down by elite rock and roll storytellers like Bob Dylan and Neil Young. Frontman Taylor Goldsmith forges his own legend with his powerful vocals, poetic lyrics, and passionate songwriting. The rest of the band fleshes out his masterpieces, starting with the propulsive drumming and falsetto backing vocals of brother Griffin Goldsmith. Tay Strathairn throws in elegiac keyboard flourishes, while bassist Wylie Gerber drops in smooth melodies on the low end. Ticket buyers will love the nods to classic rock, country, and folk, even as Dawes brings their own contemporary flare to stages across North America.
BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:
The roots of Los Angeles folk-rockers Dawes lie in the post-punk band Simon Dawes, the high school project of vocalists/guitarists Taylor Goldsmith and Blake Mills. The group grew to include Wylie Gelber on bass and Taylor’s brother Griffin on drums, though Mills left shortly after their 2006 debut Carnivore. As the sole voice and songwriter in the band, Goldsmith regrouped and added keyboardist Alex Casnoff. Rechristened as Dawes, the group began to explore a more folk-oriented sound with their 2009 debut North Hills, which was praised by critics for its unique and refreshing blend of familiar folk elements. The band made their national television debut on The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson the following year before kicking off a co-headlining tour with Blitzen Trapper. Before the release of their 2013 album Stories Don’t End, Tay Strathairn replaced Casnoff on keys and added an even more dynamic sound to the group’s roster. In 2015 Dawes issued their fourth album All Your Favorite Bands, an acclaimed release that has cemented Dawes as a group to watch for both their stellar recorded output and their passionate live performances.
Dawes and Shovels & Rope were both incredible. Both had great stage presences, great song selection, and great crowd response.
Strong Performance by Dawes. Good energy; tight musicianship.
Being a Dawes fan for a few years I was really excited to see them live for the first time - and I was not disappointed at all! They were a tighter band live than I anticipated - and their great harmonies shined through well. They were also "rockier" which really translated well to the live show.
Dawes is awesome. They played everything I wanted to hear.
HUGE fan of the Dawes!! So glad they made a trip out to Cincinnati to play he Taft. I am a So Cal Gal and this was bringing a little bit of home to my new doorstep. Can' t express how amazing it was watching all the guys feeling the music takes my breath away. Not to mention Sara Watkins blew my mind. Great started ;) Overall I would say that now my head is filled with Rainbows and Sunshine. THANKS DAWES!
Boths acts were great. Had to stand for the entire show. No seats in the venue. Love the music, did not like the venue. Will not be going back to the Ballroom to see any other shows. Hopefully something else will open to host these types of events.
Great show- GO Dawes! Musicianship, lyrics, stories, energy, drummer, really--the drummer!
Totally blown away. It was a small but great crowd and the music was truly amazing. Clean tight set full of energy and emotion. I will see them if they come back anywhere close. New favorite band.
Loved loved loved Dawes and Belle Brigade....they were amazing. Didn't particularly like Blitzen Trapper...think they were in the wrong genre. Dawes blew us all away and will definitely be following them.
These bands kill it live and have a great down home, Americana vibe. If you love music. You will love Blitzen Trapper and Dawes. Very talented and all around solid bands.
I've been hooked on Dawes recordings ever since I discovered them this summer. So I've been looking forward to seeing them live, although a bit concerned about some lackluster YouTube video performances I've seen. Dawes has a lot of potential. They're songs are terrific and there's talent there to be unleashed. But they weren't connecting with the crowd. With the exception of Griffin Goldsmith (the drummer), band members retreated into a safe mental space and set of familiar looking stage moves. It appeared as if they were simply going through the motions, playing at us instead of to us. No eye contact. Perhaps they were exhausted as it was the end of the tour. Maybe they were freaked out by playing at the legendary Fillmore. Who knows, but with the exception of Griffin, everyone seemed somewhere else mentally. Musically, the performance seemed rushed and rigid. The songs didn't seem to be unfolding in a natural way. Music was being played as opposed to being created. It wasn't spontaneous, there were no risks. The performances of the keyboardist and bass player were particularly uninspiring. When John Bonham died, Led Zeppelin died with him - he was that integral to the Zepplin sound. These guys weren't adding anything, they could easily be replaced by a thousand other musicians. I don't think Dawes can reach the next level until the keyboards and bass up their game in a very big way. They need to do better. I really want to like Dawes, and I'm looking forward to the performances catching up with the songwriting.
Both bands were awesome. Blitzen Trapper is incredibly talented and it was great to see Dawes on their way up. Cool venue as well.
I heard about Dawes for the first time over the summer. I got the new album, and like most people who listened to it could not stop. It is full of emotional, well written songs and recorded with texture and a warm sound. It was slightly mellow at times, but still Nothing Is Wrong is an impressive 2nd album and it made me want to see them live. So along with a few friends who were also interested, I bought tickets to the Webster Hall show. Two days later I'm still glowing with happiness that I went. It was incredible. I went in expecting a nice relaxed set with a sort of rehearsed sound. Not what they are about. They came out with passion and grit, and made the well recorded songs come alive with energy. Taylor is a legit frontman with the entire package. He writes incredible songs, has a great voice, and can play the guitar better than most. My friends and I all got the feeling that we were witnessing the start of a really special band.
I enjoyed Blitzen Trapper's performance even though i have not listened to them much. Being a huge Dawes fan, I really was pumped for the show... I was extremely disappointed by the back up singer being on stage. To some the music is the same but not to me and I had left mid-show because of this. I will not attend another Dawes performace unless I am guarenteed that I will see the "real" band.
Dawes sounded like any other pop band with non distinct music and wanting lyrics. The leader sing jumped around stage like by 2 year old niece. I don't recommend seeing them in concert.
Dawes is just an incredible band with insane talent and lyrics that will change the way you see color. They played all the jams, inlcuding a great cover of Kodochrome sung by Griffin Goldsmith. Taylor always has the best energy and is a great performer. The hottie painist was looking gorgeous and played beautifully. The encore was the best part... Taylor and Griffin sang "Take me out of the City" as a duet and it was beatiful. Then they played "That Western Skyline" which is always their best performance... Ended with a bang with ANOTHER song!! Bitzen Trapper was a great opening... played Fur, which is always a crowd pleaser. The acoustic guitar/pianist/cow bell guy is great!
One of the best bands I've ever seen and it's funny, not many people know about them or have even heard of them. They are awesome.
two very talented bands. Great venue. Always great to see youngs bands on the way up. Both of these bands should be on to greater things. Went to See Dawes play, came out an even bigger fan of Dawes, and a new fan of Blitzen Trapper
I Love DAWES, they's got a strong and classic sound and Taylor always has great stage presence. they definitely will show you a good time and always have fun as they play. i would definitely recommend them.
I can't believe I didn't know these guys when I was living in Los Angeles and could have seen them regularly. I remember walking into the cafe where I work and setting up my play list for the day. I was so psyched to be playing Dawes. I came back out to begin work and happened to notice that someone had come by the night before and left a bunch of fliers for their upcoming show. I stopped for a moment to look around. Was I being set up? Had God granted my secret wish to see my new favorite band? Ha! I spent the next month turning customers onto their stuff and even saw a few of them at the show, which kicked ass; I danced and danced and danced! And had a great conversation with the guys afterward. Got some great footage on my phone and now I wake up to my recording of this concert every day! I'm truly blessed to have seen them live! When are you coming back to Boston, Dawes? I can't wait to see you again!
