DAWES IN CONCERT:

Folk-rockers Dawes have picked up the mantle laid down by elite rock and roll storytellers like Bob Dylan and Neil Young. Frontman Taylor Goldsmith forges his own legend with his powerful vocals, poetic lyrics, and passionate songwriting. The rest of the band fleshes out his masterpieces, starting with the propulsive drumming and falsetto backing vocals of brother Griffin Goldsmith. Tay Strathairn throws in elegiac keyboard flourishes, while bassist Wylie Gerber drops in smooth melodies on the low end. Ticket buyers will love the nods to classic rock, country, and folk, even as Dawes brings their own contemporary flare to stages across North America.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

The roots of Los Angeles folk-rockers Dawes lie in the post-punk band Simon Dawes, the high school project of vocalists/guitarists Taylor Goldsmith and Blake Mills. The group grew to include Wylie Gelber on bass and Taylor’s brother Griffin on drums, though Mills left shortly after their 2006 debut Carnivore. As the sole voice and songwriter in the band, Goldsmith regrouped and added keyboardist Alex Casnoff. Rechristened as Dawes, the group began to explore a more folk-oriented sound with their 2009 debut North Hills, which was praised by critics for its unique and refreshing blend of familiar folk elements. The band made their national television debut on The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson the following year before kicking off a co-headlining tour with Blitzen Trapper. Before the release of their 2013 album Stories Don’t End, Tay Strathairn replaced Casnoff on keys and added an even more dynamic sound to the group’s roster. In 2015 Dawes issued their fourth album All Your Favorite Bands, an acclaimed release that has cemented Dawes as a group to watch for both their stellar recorded output and their passionate live performances.

    Best show of 2023

    by Frankie Lee on 1/2/24

Wow, what a great show. 1st Capitol Theater is the best place to see a show in the tri-state area. The opener Annika Bennett was amazing, a great new artist that has so much of a future. Then Dawes was great as usual. They are even better live than they are in studio recordings. Great crowd. So much fun.

Really loved the show. Wasn’t sure that I’d like the format, but it was really great. Surprise intermission, but came back with a fantastic ending…

    Not positive

by Fresh on 1/1/24The Capitol Theatre - Port Chester

Whoever was responsible for the sound screwed up and didn’t fix it until after the 2nd song. That’s equals about 20 mins of sitting through unpleasantness. Also, I now think Dawes is a much better studio band generally. At least I didn’t spend a ton of money.

    A Dawes Delight

by Ronnykap on 1/1/24The Capitol Theatre - Port Chester

Incredible concert - I’ve seen them several times - this was the best, hearing them play their seminal album in full. The band was in fabulous form, and Taylor was magnetic! Rock On!

    Incredible as always!

by Rob AA-MI on 1/1/24The Capitol Theatre - Port Chester

The Dawes, Stories Don't End, show at the Capitol Theatre on 12/29/23 was absolutely perfect. Taylor Goldsmith and the band performed the full album in the first half of the show and expertly captured all of their original passion within each of the melodies. The vocals were crisp, clear, and strong. The band's instrumental performance was classic, energetic, and representative of the 2013 album, which can be difficult as artists (and follower's taste) evolve with time and experience. It was a special experience hearing the entire album live after treasuring so many of the tracks over the last decade. The second half of the show was a compilation of new and old tracks showing off Goldsmith's rich vocals and emotional story telling style. No one left the Capitol that evening feeling unmoved. Thank you to the Capitol for staying true to it's American music roots, to Dawes for promoting the youthful and inspirational artist Annika Bennett, and to Goldsmith for continuing to deliver on his passion. We will always appreciate and treasure these experiences. Peace and happiness in the New Year, to all.

A great band in a terrific venue = a terrific show

by GB from NY on 1/1/24The Capitol Theatre - Port Chester

What a terrific show, the band was in great form, seeming to sincerely enjoy themselves and appreciate the audience. This was a celebration for the 10th anniversary of “Stories Don’t End”, which they performed in the entirety then took a short break followed by additional songs. The Capitol is always a fine venue but for this show in particular the sound was fantastic, beautiful balanced and crystal clear vocals.

What a Fun holiday Party! Great venue lots of space not too crowded and the music was really fabulous. Bringing all the friends including Mandy Moore and many others, that we enjoyed! Love the song selection. The guy from my morning jacket Jim and Taylor G was cool good to see some local artist jam would go back again next year.!!!

by Juliano Ferreira on 12/12/23The Bellwether - Los Angeles

I have been hearing Dawes since 2016, I thought it was awesome already, lyrics and music, but the concert was something else. Great guys, great band and best audience interaction. I’m glad I didn’t lose it. See you next time.

Love Dawes, love The Neptune Theater

by Ray on 5/2/23Neptune Theatre - Seattle

Always a great show at the Neptune, just small enough venue to feel personal but still big enough to get lost in the crowd. Perfect set up for a band like Dawes, who had my heart in hand all night

    A good night

by Teddy J. on 5/1/23The Fillmore - San Francisco

We love the Fillmore and my wife is a Dawes fan. They announced at the start of the show that they were going to do two sets. The first set was good but a little on the sweet side very Dawes like, however the turned up the fun in the second set it was inspired.

    Best single concert experience ever

by Jim on 4/23/23Warner Theatre - Washington

We have attended so many music cruises, music festivals and individual concerts in our lives. The Dawes show at the Warner Theater ranks as the absolute best single concert performance that we have ever experienced. The VIP treatment with the sound check, question and answer session, and group picture was absolutely incredible, and the performance itself was even better. Having second row seats certainly helped, but the performance by the band was phenomenal. Dawes is our absolutely favorite band, and this concert showed why. We greatly appreciated not having an opening act, so we could focus totally on Dawes, especially since Dawes will do a longer show without an opening act. So many touring acts do the same show night after night with the same songs often in the exact same order. Dawes, however, changes its setlist night after night, so fans never see what is coming. Hearing seldom-played songs like "Fire Away", "One of Us" and "Most People" were unexpected pleasures as well as hearing such regular favorites as ""A Little Bit of Everything", "When My Time Comes" and of course "All Your Favorite Bands" gave the show a perfect balance. It was also great hearing so many songs from the new CD since the live performances far outweigh the album versions. We have seen Dawes many times, and the band always plays each show as if it might be its final performance ever. That sort of performance is probably leading to many new fans. The Warner Theater was the perfect mid-level venue that lends itself to perfect performances by Dawes!

Great band, not so great venue

by KK on 4/17/23Majestic Theatre - Madison

The Majestic Madison oversold the show. People were “holding” spots in standing room areas like it was a small town 4th of July parade. I’m generally good with GA standing but when it is oversold and over populated with d-bags, I did not enjoy. I was really looking forward to seeing Dawes again. The venue was really too small for the band as well. The sound mix was not right for the place and hampered the experience. The other thing which was unnecessary, is Dawes too a 20 minute intermission mid way through. We bailed after that. Too bad, because Dawes is awesome.
