About

DAVID SEDARIS ON TOUR:

Beloved humorist and perennial New York Times best-seller David Sedaris has been bringing his signature self-deprecation to both the page and the stage ever since his comic debut in the late-'70s. Sedaris's live shows are equal parts touching and uproarious, taking his childhood trials and tribulations as a starting point and going on to tackle everything from his eccentric family to American politics. Fans of witty, irony-laden anecdotes are in for a treat as Sedaris hits concert halls around the country with his latest show An Evening with David Sedaris.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Born to a large family in Binghamton, NY, Sedaris experienced a turbulent childhood that has informed his comedy ever since. After being discovered at a Chicago comedy club in the late '70s by Ira Glass, Sedaris began appearing regularly on Glass's weekly radio program The Wild Room, making a name for himself with his wry, self-effacing stories . In 1992 he made his National Public Radio debut with a reading of "SantaLand Diaries", a hilarious recounting of his days working as a holiday elf at a department store. Since then he has been a regular guest on NPR's This American Life, landed on the New York Times Best Seller list with five essay collections, and received a Grammy nod for his 2004 comedy album Live at Carnegie Hall. Back on tour, the ever-gracious Sedaris will treat fans to another round of laughs at his expense.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"We expected it to be great and he exceeded our expectations. I have not laughed so much in ages. Wonderful! "

"I laughed so much I almost missed what was being send in between punch lines! He has a true gift and I'm so grateful he shares it with the world on these tours! Hands down worth every penny!"

"The best part is that for everyone who has read all of his published work, the shows are always full of new material that has yet to be published; so, it never feels like you've paid just to hear a reading of something that's on bookstore shelves."

He's just as personable, charming, and hilarious as he is on his audiobooks or on This American Life.

Excellent evening .... very responsive audience obviously intimately familiar with the speaker's work. Made Sedaris' work so much more animated when he is reading for an audience.

Delightful way to spend an evening!

by ColleenG on 10/16/09Adler Theatre - Davenport

David Sedaris makes you feel like you are his best friend. He's so clever and original. I loved every minute of it! There was a guy a few rows behind my husband and me with a deep belly laugh who laughed loud and often. It reminded me of stories of Milton Berle's mother in the audience of every one of his performances laughing uproriously at all of his jokes. It added so much to the fun!

    David Sedaris was hilarious!

by DonF on 10/16/09Adler Theatre - Davenport

My friend and I went to see David Sedaris at the Adler, and just like when I've read some of his books or listened to him on NPR, I had tears in my eyes from laughing! His quirky antidotes, his take on his dysfunctional family and crazy life experiences, as well as the way he delivers his lines, make him an awesome writer, reader and performer. Interestingly enough, he seemed somewhat awkward when not reading from his papers, which led me to believe he's a somewhat shy person in real life. I thought the question and answer segment at the end was a little weird, too (it felt a little awkward), but overall, I really enjoyed his performance.

    David Sedaris makes me laugh

    by whitty222 on 10/15/09State Theatre - Minneapolis

If you like reading David Sedaris or listening to him on This American Life, you would really enjoy seeing him live. He is witty and poignent at the same time, and so self-effacing, he plugged someone else's book. (Which made him laugh while reading excerpts from.) He had time for a Q and A and was so very gracious at the book signing; asking questions and drawing pictures in the books.

Sedaris has a wicked sense of humor

by PenelopeMN on 10/15/09State Theatre - Minneapolis

I was amazed by David's abililty to spin a story. He takes you on a journey that is so engaging that you don't remember how the story started until he brings you back to the beginning. I appreciate his self-deprecating manner that reminds us all not to take ourselves too seriously.

Witty, engaging and 'real' - David Sedaris was every bit as engaging as I'd hoped. A true treat and a genuine, authentic person.

    David Sedaris is always good!

by PetDaphSunLily on 10/15/09State Theatre - Minneapolis

David Sedaris had fresh material as always. Theatre was good. His readings were funny and appropriate for the times. Possibly a little dark, however, the dead turtle in the fish tank, making your own sea water, and feeding hamburger to pets was a little to close to my own childhood probably making it dark for me.

If you like his books, you'll love his readings.

by ToddE on 10/15/09State Theatre - Minneapolis

David Sedaris practically has the market cornered on his type of humor. His books all seem to become runaway best-sellers these days, not just because they're good, but also from terrific word of mouth and exposure on public radio's This American Life. Anyone who's heard Mr. Sedaris on TAL knows that his dry humor is best experienced in HIS voice, but to hear him live is to hear works in progress -- literally having been edited and rewritten on the road. That means you get his brand of snark on issues timely and timeless. Strongly recommended.

    Must See David Sedaris!!

by RedDogGirl on 10/15/09State Theatre - Minneapolis

David Sedaris is not only incredibly funny he is articulate, intelligent and real. It is amazing that this man has been telling stories for years and years and yet he still has so many more to tell. He can be a little liberal, a little political, a little crude, a little strange - but he is ALWAYS A LOT REAL! He is a real person living in and visiting many places on this planet and has he got stories to share! He has a wonderful ability to see things that may of us miss – and an even more wonderful way of telling us about it. Even if you've never read his writing (which I STRONGLY encourage you to do) - do yourself a favor and spend an evening with him. He is an amazing storyteller and life observer. You will still be giggling to yourself for days afterward.

    Sedaris short on material

by MarielK on 10/15/09State Theatre - Minneapolis

Beginning stories were great, but then he seemed to run out of material. The low point was the precious moments he took,in the short time he spent with his audience, to read two excerpts from The Onion. The excerpts were not only beyond stupid but were also offensive. I didn't pay $35.00 to hear him from The Onion!! During his routine, he seemed like he didn't really know what he would do next--fine in more intimate settings, not so fine to an almost sell out crowd. I don't think I will pay to see him again.

David Sedaris was hilarious- didn't know what to expect from an Author, but he was as funny as the most funny comedians I've seen.
