David Gray on Tour

David Gray can captivate an entire sold-out stadium with just his voice and a guitar, pulling at every listener's heartstrings with each emotional hook. The singer-songwriter grew comfortable on the stage starting out in the early 1990s touring around the UK, Ireland and the US. Within a few years, Gray's audiences grew significantly, especially when he started opening for groups like Radiohead and the Dave Matthews Band. But it wasn't until he went independent and released the album White Ladder in 1998 that Gray began getting the recognition he deserved. He ended up performing at the popular Glastonbury Festival in 1999, and eventually made it to the main stage in 2003. He's since toured the world extensively, selling out dates from the US to Europe to Australia, as he continues to expand his impressive catalog of songs.

David Gray in Concert

English singer-songwriter David Gray has enjoyed a strong, steady career composing some of music's most understated - and underrated - melodies. Gray was born in Sale, Cheshire, in North West England, in 1968, but moved to Wales with his family as a young boy. There, he started dabbling in music, playing in local punk bands as a teenager. He then headed back to England to attend the Liverpool College of Art (whose alumni include John Lennon), and began honing his songwriting skills. After graduation, he relocated to London to pursue a solo career and was quickly signed to Hut Records in 1992. He then released his debut single, "Birds Without Wings," followed by his 1993 debut album, A Century Ends, which captures a young Gray finding and forming his fierce, folk-inspired style. His next two albums, Flesh and Sell, Sell, Sell, brought some extra attention - especially in Ireland - but failed to reach a wider audience across the pond. He decided to go DIY for his fourth album, White Ladder, which he recorded in his London apartment and self-released in 1998. This decision proved to be more than wise: Dave Matthews then released the album on his brand-new ATO Records in 2000, and the single "Babylon" shot up the charts in both the UK and the US. The album has since been certified platinum a jaw-dropping 10 times. Over the following decade, Gray would continue to experiment, weaving in electronic touches while maintaining his signature heartfelt acoustic style. His 2005 album, Slow Motion, debuted at the top of the charts in Ireland and the UK, while his 2009 release, Draw the Line, featured notable appearances from Annie Lennox and Jolie Holland. In the next decade, Gray would slow down a bit, releasing his 10th studio album, Mutineers, in 2014, before returning in 2019 with Gold in a Brass Age, both released on his own IHT Records.

The North American tour announcement follows on the heels of Gray's upcoming UK, Ireland and EU tour. Horrible venue

    by DavidGrayFan17 on 5/23/17EXPRESS LIVE! - Columbus

I want to be clear that the rating and bottom line are solely for the venue. This venue is not the appropriate setting for true artists like David Gray. He is a phenomenal artist and this venue (and the attendees) are more suited to a county fair. David Gray would receive 5 stars and a yes recommendation every time (if I could hear him over the drunk drug rep who talked throughout the entire show).

    Always Fantastic

by GrayLove on 5/21/17Pantages Theatre - Minneapolis

David Gray was, once again, amazing! I brought a friend who has never seen him in concert and she thought he was "Fabulous". I have seen David perform many times in different venues but this time was the first without his band. I loved that this allowed his voice to be front and center at all times. He is my all time favorite!!!

    Fantastic Show

by PeterJohn on 5/19/17Uptown Theater - Kansas City

Bravo David! Didn't know exactly what to expect when we bought our tickets. This was the 3rd time we have seen David Gray and I think this was the best show he's ever done. If he's playing ANYWHERE even close, go see him. We live in Dallas and drove to KC MO just to see him. You won't be sorry.

    Fantastic venue! Great show!

by Seppo on 5/19/17Uptown Theater - Kansas City

What a guy. David Gray is such a class act. He nailed all the songs he played. Didn't skip a beat. Good rapport with the audience. Cracked a few jokes. He even corrected his city shoutout mistake in fine fashion. During the first set, he kept saying, "Hello Kansas City, Kansas!" and "Looking good Kansas!" Someone obv corrected him, b/c he started the second set with ... "Hello, MISSOURI! Kansas City, Missouri." with a sheepish grin. Thanks for the great show, David. Keep being awesome.

    David Gray concernt

by Goodsky on 5/19/17Uptown Theater - Kansas City

As usual, David was amazing! I would venture to say he sounds better live than he does on his albums. I love that he performs and doesn't spend a ton of time chit chatting to add filler in to the concert like so many artists do.

    A fantastic evening of music

by JRenee1965 on 5/19/17Uptown Theater - Kansas City

David Gray's solo acoustic concert was unbelievably good. He played for nearly two hours straight without a break. He played newer tunes as well as some of our old favorites. Of all the concerts we have attended for many different musical artists, this one was the best of the lot.

David Gray is a musician extraordinaire!

by cinderjohn on 5/18/17Pantages Theatre - Minneapolis

While we were at first disappointed that David didn't have his whole band with him, we soon forgot because he is such a musician to the core! He and the music became one--his sense of musicality is tremendous! David played for 2+ hours straight with hardly a breather between songs--lots of David Gray for the money!

    David Gray was incredible!

by gwrmlr on 5/18/17Pantages Theatre - Minneapolis

David Gray's acoustical set was, for the most part, was acoustic. Being more of a musical purist (I guess), I was a bit put off by the use of looping guitar sounds/sequences. That was the only negative - the performance was excellent; David's voice was top-notch and his piano playing was superb. The venue, The Pantages Theater, was the perfect place to display his talents as the Pantages is gorgeous, acoustically refined, and plush - just like David's voice and music.

David Gray was Amazing as usual!

    by MANIAK1 on 5/18/17Pantages Theatre - Minneapolis

Can't say enough about David Gray, this is my 2nd time seeing him, I've brought each of my daughters now and they both loved him as well. He is amazing in concert, plays most all of the favorites, puts on a 2 hour non stop show and nails it with his piano and guitar.

    Understated yet compelling

by sfgirl6 on 12/4/16Palace of Fine Arts - San Francisco

David Gray seems a bit uncomfortable performing in public but his music and his voice, especially, is amazing. I'm not his biggest fan as I prefer my music to be more upbeat but I was mesmerized by his performance (even the mess ups). It was an acoustic set where it was just him and his instruments - guitars, piano and loop pedal. He is very talented and his voice soared as he performed with the rawest of emotions. I also liked that he's very down-to-earth, not some big star miles away from anyone but just a regular person who happens to have a gift for singing and song-writing. The venue was great. So far, this is the only theater in SF that has good views from every single seat. There is plenty of space between rows and they are staggered high enough that tall people are never in your way. I am impressed. The only thing I didn't like was the a/c running on full despite a very wet and chilly night in the city. I had to wear my coat throughout the show. Overall, what a lovely evening!

    David Gray

by misscbliss on 11/29/16Palace of Fine Arts - San Francisco

I saw the words David Gray in my email and bought tickets the moment they went on sale. I had no idea that it was a solo acoustic set until an hour before. He was amazing! I felt like I was witnessing something really special and meaningful. There's something about performing solo that really brings out the heart and soul of each song. All my old favorites seemed new again. It was just a wonderful transcendent experience. The only downside was the rude people in front of me who talked constantly during the performance. I really had no idea why they bothered to come to the concert when they clearly weren't listening. It was a solo acoustic show, for heaven's sake! They were also drunk, which may have had something to do with it.

What else to say? Favorite artist of all time at a really cool, intimate venue with not a bad seat in the house.

    Shocked

by Jacknat2 on 11/26/16Scottish Rite Auditorium - Collingswood

At times I listened and watched in disbelief. I feel honored to have been in the presence of such a talent. All I know is I was thoroughly entertained entertained right up to the intermission and he had not yet performed ONE song from an album that sold over 7 million copies. After the intermission the momentum continued to an amazing finish.

Great show for a newly discovered (to us) artist

by Randi442 on 3/10/11Davies Symphony Hall - San Francisco

We first heard David Gray on KFOG in the San Francisco Bay Area, and liked what we heard. This was our first time to hear him live. He put on an excellent show, a fair amount of variety in his setlist, and just about the right amount of camaraderie with the audience. He is definitely a talent and this won't be the last of his concerts we attend. The event was at Davies Symphony Hall, and the acoustics were phenomenal. The opening act was a little too Irish-ethnic to really suit our taste, but it wasn't unpleasant.
