David Foster on Tour

Though he's best known as the behind-the-scenes producer and songwriter for megastars like Celine Dion, Michael Buble and Josh Groban, David Foster isn't afraid to step out in front of the mic on occasion. In 2018, he launched The Hitman Tour, a special series of intimate shows that saw him perform selections from his vast repertoire of hits on the piano alongside a revolving cast of guest vocalists (including his wife, Katharine McPhee) and share stories of the songs' creation. The tour proved so successful that Foster extended it through 2019 and into 2020. But Foster isn't one to rest on his past glories: April 2020 sees the release of his first solo album in 24 years, Eleven Words, which applies the stripped-down piano setting of the Hitman Tour to a set of 11 new originals.

David Foster in Concert

Look up any adult-contemporary pop hit from the past 40 years, and there's a good chance David Foster's name is somewhere in the credits. Over the course of his storied career, the Victoria, British Columbia, impresario has mentored some of the biggest names in pop and pushed veteran rock artists to even loftier levels of success, earning some 16 Grammys and Order of Canada honors in the process. After first breaking into the music industry playing keyboards for Canadian soul-rock troupe Skylark, Foster spent the '70s as a session player for the likes of George Harrison and Diana Ross, before scoring his first high-profile writing credit on Earth, Wind & Fire's classic 1979 slow jam "After the Love Has Gone." But through his early-'80s collaborations with Chicago, Foster minted his signature glossy sound, transforming the group from a jazzy classic-rock warhorse into a soft-rock hit machine before applying that Midas touch to Lite-FM divas like Celine Dion and Whitney Houston in the '90s. Amazingly, Foster's hitmaking prowess has only grown more potent since then — in the 21st century, he turned Michael Buble from a wedding singer into a world-class crooner and guided Josh Groban's crossover from classical to pop. But for all his successes behind the boards, Foster has never lost his passion for performing, by periodically tending to his own career as a solo artist in between his production work.

I thought that the whole show was fantastic! Love David Foster and Katharine McPhee is a beautiful singer. Their little boy playing the drums was phenomenal! And an added bonus, Daniel Emmett. Loved him, too. What a voice! I knew it was going to be a special show and it was all that and more!

    Great Experience

by Job on 5/7/24Hard Rock Live Northern Indiana - Gary

Very entertaining. Music exceptional. Bannering back and forth between Katherine and David funny. Added singing by Danial Lewis and their son’ s drum playing made the evening that more pleasant, plus the singing of the 2 people in the audience was another highlight. We’ll worth the money. Would definitely see them again.

The facility is a beautiful and acoustical place. It made for what seemed like a cozy evening of entertainment and closeness to the performers. The band and Daniel Emmet were exceptional. Of course the headliners, David and Catherine were awesome. A nice mixture of various musical numbers. A must see concert!

Love the intimacy of the State Theater. David and Katharine were tremendous hosts. Loved the music and storytelling. It was a perfect balance. Felt like they invited us into their home for the evening. And dang! That little boy of theirs is amazing on the drums too!!! Highly recommend this show. Thank you Katharine and David.❤️

I could have listened to David and Katherine all evening. They incorporated some humor, reminiscent of years past. Their young son had a drumming moment with the band. A thoroughly enjoyable evening.

    TOO LOUD!!

by Kathleen on 5/4/24State Theatre - Minneapolis

I enjoyed the content, for the most part, but everything was microphoned WAY TOO LOUD. I had to cover my ears many times. The louder is not the better. No need to blast it at us. And Katharine’s singing was very hard to catch her words. That was frustrating. It would feel much more intimate and user friendly if the sound was at a reasonable level. Please!

    A Really Great Evening

by Lonycera on 5/4/24State Theatre - Minneapolis

Katherine started out with Julie London's hit from 1955, Cry Me a River. There was a lot of good-natured Sonny and Cher-esque banter between the two. David, of course, was on the piano. Other musicians included a guy on bass guitar, a drummer, and a guy on what, I think, was a synthesizer. Part way through they had an "audience participation"segment. They handed the mike off to 3 members of the audience. The first guy wanted to sing with Katherine which got a deadpan response out of David but Katherine obliged. Also with them was Daniel Emmet. Near the end, he came out and sang Nessun Dorma which brought a standing ovation. After that, the audience stayed on their feet until the encore when David told everyone to sit down.

    Better than expected

by SM on 5/4/24State Theatre - Minneapolis

Very entertaining. Didn’t realize extent of his song writing. Katherine has a great voice but seemed uncomfortable on stage and looked at her husband most of the time, stood close to piano, just seemed unsure of herself and performing. This was only 2nd city and start of tour so hope it gets more comfortable. Their son adorable. Drum playing impressive.
