About

Since its earliest days, comedian David Cross' career was defined by two things: adoration by critics and disinterest by mainstream audiences. His stature in the alternative comedy world made him one of the subgenre's brightest stars, seemingly ripe for breakout success for literally decades. Highly intelligent, brutally honest, and often confrontational, Cross never seemed to care too much about conventional success. To his apparent amusement, these potential breakout roles came and went without acceptance by the general public. Nevertheless, the size of the cult following that he earned from "Arrested Development" (Fox, 2003-06) and "Mr. Show with Bob and David" (HBO, 1995-98) eventually resembled conventional success in everything but name.

    Bad

by Mk on 6/20/23Roxian Theatre - Pittsburgh

I’ve been to the Roxian before, great to see shows/ concerts. David cross show was unfortunately not an even good show. I found the first comedian funny. David’s show started off okay with a few good jokes. It just went downhill. Political humor is fine but the humor part was missing. We left early after the debacle on stage with the audience member(s)

    Great Show

by Kidindiana on 6/20/23Roxian Theatre - Pittsburgh

There were a few cringey hecklers but I suppose that'll happen. The show was super funny though and I'm actually excited to see the special that comes from this material.

    Mostly Liked It

by Eric on 5/21/23Taft Theatre - Cincinnati

    1. Hated the opener, he just screamed into the mic, not very sophisticated humor. David - please drop him. 2. David was pretty funny overall, I would consider seeing him again

Smart and funny dude but felt like a conglomerate of CNN news articles preached behind a pulpit.

    Left after an hour

    by j. B. on 5/13/23Barrymore Theatre - Madison

Very few jokes just ranting about religion, politics and abortion. I thought this show was about being a father not a soapbox for his beliefs. I’ve been a fan since the 90’s I know he is funny. When the whole room cheered for miscarriages being gods abortion this show was not for me!

Just out of the zone and reaching

    by F_ticketmaster_gougers_23 on 5/13/23Barrymore Theatre - Madison

David seemed to be reaching for material, current events, and only at time hit in stride, he often didn't sound like himself, at least in delivery. Just out of the zone and reaching. Seemed to be playing to the crowd in a way that felt disingenuous. All this said he's one of my favorite comedians, just not a good set

Longtime Fan, First Time Audience Member

by mixedmartialmom on 5/10/23The Wilbur - Boston

I have been a David Cross fan for 30 years, ever since I saw some of his & Bob Odenkirk's stand-up somewhere on cable when I was in college (David Cross & I actually went to the same college! Not at the same time - he is a few years older than I am - and I wasn't aware of that fact until much later). Loved Mr. Show, loved With Bob & David, loved him on Just Shoot Me, love all his previous stand-up specials, and especially loved his book. I had no idea when I got the tickets for the Boston show that we would be as close to the stage as we were; that was a nice surprise. He is just as clever and sharp as ever. This set seemed to be entirely new material (some familiar themes, for which he's known, of course). I know he's been asked about it in recent interviews and explained his reasoning, but I could have done without his child being the set up for as much of the set as it was. It didn't make anything less funny or meaningful (and maybe people who aren't as familiar with his older routines wouldn't even be aware) but he had an identity as someone who was outside of all the celebrity stuff. But now he's got the much-younger wife and the little kid with the precious name and plays up the family man and how my child has changed me schtick. Much like how Dave Grohl has to have his teen kid as a backup singer and Dave Gahan has to have his daughter as the opening act on the Depeche Mode tour -- not quite the same but the running theme of "my kid" especially from someone who used to be not only not about that but even mocked it was not my favorite. Opening comic Sean Patton was high-energy, self-deprecating, fun, did a cool twist on his upbringing/look vs his socio-political views, and delivered a tight, enjoyable intro to the evening. The Wilbur is a great theatre and we had a fun time. I'll always be a fan & will see him again if there is another tour in the future - he said he loves touring & I hope he plans to continue.

    Disappointed

by Lost Respect on 5/9/23The Wilbur - Boston

I was really looking forward to this show. I love his character on Arrested Development. I was expecting that type of humor. To my dismay, that was not the case. So many of his "jokes" were horrifyingly not funny at all. It's not ok under any circumstance to joke about school shootings or killing innocent people or animals...and so much more that I can't bring myself to say. I stayed much longer than I should have, but it was a cramped venue and I didn't want to disturb anyone so I waited for a pause and hoping for a chance he would redeem himself. I walked out as soon as I could. I lost all respect.

    Ridiculously Clever, Twisted, Fascinating

by PatteAnne on 5/9/23The Wilbur - Boston

I know that this gas been said many times, but it’s difficult to know how to begin. First, the show started on time. The opening act-Sean Patton- was honestly good. Had an interesting lense through which he sees the world and I left with a couple of, ‘I need to think about this more’ moments. David Cross: From the first syllable, the man did nothing but offer a reason to laugh. Or to shake your head while wondering how he took that path (because he’s a genius so there HAD to be a logical reason, right?!?!). How organic bananas, Jesus, a wet stone and zygotes weave together into a fascinating tapestry of a stand up set is the gift he gives. I LOVE Anthony Jeselnik (and have seen him), but David Cross offers a whole new plane of content delivery that prompts gasps, laughs, groans and opportunities to dig in deeply and do some challenging self-assessment and introspection.

What are you ask me right now?

by Shaud on 5/7/23Lincoln Theatre - Washington

He was funny as hell! What do you want from me? I can’t wait till the special comes out. He had some just for DC jokes because nobody else would get them. There was a reference to the Flintstones that the young people didn’t get. I don’t want to ruin the ending but it was very spiritual. The end.

    Horrible

by KK on 4/26/23Théâtre Corona - Montreal

We were a group of 11 people and not one of us thought he was funny. He was nothing but crude. We paid to listen to him vent about his dislikes of politics, religion and children dying. Not what we would expect in these days of gloom. Would not recommend him to my worst enemy!!

    Not what I was expecting

    by Hot-dog on 4/26/23Théâtre Corona - Montreal

It was very controversial, and that’s ok, but I find it needed to be a little more balanced with laughs, and a little less heavy on the uncomfortable moments. I understand he used the opportunity as a platform and forum for what he’s passionate about and the uncomfortable things that need more of a voice, but at the end of the day, people payed to see a comedy show.

    10/10 David Cross Is Awesome!

by Barry R on 4/23/23The Senate - Columbia

David Cross put on an excellent show! If you liked any of his work from Mr. show or his previous standup specials (Shut Up You Baby, It’s Not Funny, Bigger and Blacker, Making America Great Again,) then this show is for you. If you only know David Cross from Alvin & The Chipmunks or as Tobias and you get offended easily this show is not for you. Venue was intimate and easy to find. Got lucky and easily found parking, but could see parking being more difficult if you came to the show late.
