About

Since its earliest days, comedian David Cross' career was defined by two things: adoration by critics and disinterest by mainstream audiences. His stature in the alternative comedy world made him one of the subgenre's brightest stars, seemingly ripe for breakout success for literally decades. Highly intelligent, brutally honest, and often confrontational, Cross never seemed to care too much about conventional success. To his apparent amusement, these potential breakout roles came and went without acceptance by the general public. Nevertheless, the size of the cult following that he earned from "Arrested Development" (Fox, 2003-06) and "Mr. Show with Bob and David" (HBO, 1995-98) eventually resembled conventional success in everything but name.

    Viva la David Cross!

by Phoenecian on 9/24/09Orpheum Theatre - Phoenix

Excellent show, which felt less like a 'show' and more like hanging out with the funniest and most honest person. David pulled no punches, and dealt with hecklers in stride. His show even includes a commentary about bloggers and tweeters, and he showed us a clip from a show he's working on that likely won't be shown in the U.S. Funny new material! Brilliant mind! Fearless comedian!

    David Cross was amazing!

    by sundevil89 on 9/24/09Orpheum Theatre - Phoenix

David Cross seriously was one of the best shows I've ever been to. He's so irreverent and politically incorrect, and I love him for that! My only problem was all the douchebags at the show who kept shouting out stuff... even David was irritated by that. He made fun of them though, so I guess it's all good. If you have the chance to see him, do it!

    Cross was HILLARIOUS!!

by laughedthewholetime on 9/24/09Orpheum Theatre - Phoenix

David Cross far exceeded any expectations I had. The material stretched into so many different areas there could not have been one unpleased person. This was by far the best live comedy show I've ever seen. I've never laughed so hard!! Witty, intelligent, dumb fun, heckler retaliation, social and political irony, drug culture fun fun, and pure genius. CROSS RULES!! Watch his new show too, it looks great..... Why was I disappointed?

    by Pokerkid81 on 9/24/09Orpheum Theatre - Phoenix

The evening began with my girlfriend and I running into David just outside of the Orpheum while feeding the meter for our car. We exchanged "hellos" and that was about it, as the show was about to begin. Getting inside was fine, and the staff was very helpful. The opening act wasn't bad. But, I felt he was trying way too hard to get the audience's approval. An example of that was the insisting that he "He didn't make it up." O.K. we get it! I found him funny at times, but it was too much reaching. Mr. Cross, whom I recall mostly from MR. SHOW and ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT, (which we were all so rudely reminded of by a fool in the audience) is an actor/comedian that I have had the utmost respect for. I, personally am a huge fan of MR. SHOW and own the box set to prove it. David's stand up tonight to me, just did not have the energy that I was really hoping for and have seen on past HBO specials. Is it is his age? Does he really hate Phoenix, and have absolutely no desire to be here? I'm not sure. But, his attitude, frankly was something that left a somewhat bad taste in my mouth. And, it's sad, because I was looking forward to seeing a true favorite of mine. I'm sorry David Cross. After all of this being said, I'm still a fan. I would never judge someone after one performance. He may have had a terrible day, and I have chosen to believe that this was the case. Pokerkid81

Cross at his best, even though the audience wasn't

by JeffryG on 9/24/09Orpheum Theatre - Phoenix

Any fan of David Cross would thoroughly enjoy his newest material - his cynical observations on religion, politics, drugs, and more are explored in his newest bit. Cross even showed us a sneak preview of a show that he had been working on (something like, "The Increasingly Bad Decisions of Joe Smith" or whatever) which looks like a hit. The only part of the show that was frustrating was the fact that a few buffoons in the audience wanted to become part of the show, and began yelling out non-sequiturs at Cross and disrupting the show. Not David's fault, obviously, and he handled them like a pro.

    David Cross

by breakbeatbilly on 9/21/09The Warfield - San Francisco

David Cross was awesome as expected, however malevolent, as well as benevolent, heckers kind of stole the energy away from a possible magical evening. Like he said at one point, "What did you expect? An hour of me doing Tobias? I've been doing stand-up for 25 years, this is my act, why don't you know this already?"

Amazing event - definitely recommend if you like Mr. Show or his other standup! Got to see a clip of the new series he's pitching in the UK, too!

    Great show too short

by lizcaruana on 9/21/09The Warfield - San Francisco

The show was fantastic. Opening did a decent job, but kept all his good material til the end. David Cross consistently delivered incredible material, however was distracted by shouting audience members, thus causing him to jump to his punchlines that would have been more eloquently executed without the interuption. Solution, Audience should shut up, or Cross should do another line to stay more focussed.

David Cross' existence means so much to me.

by xoValeriexo on 9/20/09The Warfield - San Francisco

David Cross is my favorite comedian. To be honest, I was a little afraid of what I might find when I went to see him live; I've been disappointed by acts before whom I'd previously considered a top contender in my favorites category. David Cross, however, did not disappoint, instead he exceeded my expectations to a degree that can only be illustrated through my beaming smile(and review). His jokes were smart, witty, relatable, and unforgettable. I am a better person because David Cross exists. David Cross allows people who feel misunderstood(i.e.atheists) to feel like they finally have someone who they can look up to. I couldn't be any happier with who David Cross is as a person and as a performer. I'm sorry I'm not the best writer in the world, but just trust me when I say that David Cross has changed my life and he should never be taken for granted.

    David Cross was great!

by Hazelm on 9/20/09The Warfield - San Francisco

Great show, I drove 300 miles to see him and wasn't disappointed by the gig. The worst part were idiot fans who kept yelling out at the peak of a bit. Had to be distracting and annoying to him since comedy is all about timing. Funny stuff

    David was excellent

by eddie49 on 9/20/09The Warfield - San Francisco

David was as spot on as ever. He handled some heckeling with his usual great comebacks. Talking to Patton Oswald was really fun. Please check bookings before having two great SF at the same time. Would you book Aerosmith and ACDC on the same date?

    solid

by brakkus on 9/20/09The Warfield - San Francisco

classic performance from David Cross, including a few unpredictable gems like calling Patton Oswalt doing a gig in another venue in SF and having a fake signer for the first 15 minutes of the show only to confront him later

David Cross is a masterful performer.

by Austin1 on 9/20/09The Warfield - San Francisco

The show was fantastic. I'm a long time fan, so any review I give will be colored in that light, but really, the performance was wonderful. David Cross comes off as approachable and fun. His act is new and fresh and relevant. I don't think I could ask for more of an evening of entertainment. The hecklers were pretty annoying and obnoxious, but that sort of comes with the territory. David handled them well. I hope he enjoyed performing as much as I enjoyed watching him.

    David Cross Brand New Material

This was my first time seeing David Cross live, and being a huge fan of his other stand up albums I was not disappointed. Definitely go!

    Cross is a genius.

by Bluntosaurus on 9/20/09The Warfield - San Francisco

The night was filled with vultures and demons awaiting their prey as Cross took the stage. Some were only there to show that they couild put themselves above his comedy, while others attempted to morph him into a catch phrase celebrity. However, there were those of us, the open-minded, saucy-eyed, psychedelic-taking individuals, who were aware of David's spur of the moment comedy skills from his improv work on "Arrested Development" and "Mr. Show." We knew that an outburst from hecklers would only result in seeing his on-the-spot comedy at its best. Even though we felt sympathy for the devil during his times of rdicule, he still proved himself to be a professional when it came to dealing with hecklers. But despite the drunken scorpions and snakes and their senseless stings and bites, Cross managed to present almost nothing but new and original material, covering everything from politics and religion to sex and drugs. He even worked in a few skits involving comedic actors pretending to be fake audience members, which is something he has been doing since before his television career began in the 90s. This was a real treat for the fans who knew his legacy of work. The art of Cross may be ahead of it's time, but during these times of decay, in which Americans tend to accelerate the crises of human survival, we need a counter culture comedian like David Cross to fill the void of honesty, which we are missing from most mainstream media.

    David was a little Rusty

by MtotheK on 9/20/09The Warfield - San Francisco

He let some hecklers kind of derail a few of his jokes and didn't quite take control back of the show like I expected. He was still funny though, and I'm happy that I finally got to see him in person.

    No Tobias Funke?!

by HipsterBoy on 9/20/09The Warfield - San Francisco

Great show. All new material, with some funny bits rolled in (deaf guy signing routine to audience, another doing "live blog". Odd vibe for an SF audience. I forgot how far they take the "PC" thing.
