About

Dave Chappelle Live Performance and Tour

Dave Chappelle, mastermind behind sketch comedy goldmine Chappelle's Show, made a triumphant return to stand-up comedy in 2013. While he's beloved for his famous impersonations of Rick James and Prince, Chappelle doesn't rely on old material for his stand-up act, treating fans to an all-original show featuring extensive improvisation as he interacts with audiences. At his 2013 performances on The Oddball Comedy & Curiosity Festival, which he co-headlined with Flight of the Conchords, Chappelle had fans rolling on the floor, building anticipation for his highly coveted 2014 tour dates.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT

Born David Khari Webber Chappelle in Washington, D.C., Dave Chappelle studied theatre arts in high school before moving to New York City to pursue standup comedy. Despite getting booed off stage at the Apollo Theater's infamous "Amateur Night," he remained resilient, going on to make a name for himself on the New York comedy circuit. Following several successful film appearances in the '90s, including a starring role in 1998 cult classic Half Baked, Chappelle debuted his namesake sketch comedy show on Comedy Central in 2003, finding both critical and commercial success. In 2006 he released Dave Chappelle's Block Party, a concert film set in Brooklyn featuring performances by Kanye West, The Roots, and a temporarily-reunited Fugees.

"Dave...he is a comedic genius and one of the best ever. He was amazing and  I wished I could have gotten in line and gone to the second show!"

"He was hilarious. Talked about some of his history and was not afraid to get the audience involved. I had a great time."

  • Chappelles return to standup

by ShannaKay on 6/17/12Robinson Center Music Hall - Little RockRating: 4 out of 5

Was so excited to see the return of Dave Chappelle to standup. The two comedians before him were great. Was also an ok dj amping everyone up. After a 7pm start time, Dave did not come on stage until around 8:40pm. He performed til right around 10:30 pm. The crowd was roaring for him but couldnt seem to stop heckling him. Most of his material was winged and off the cuff but in my opinion he nailed it. There were a few pauses and he chain smoked but if that's what he needed, then who cares! Everyone laughed the whole time, except there was the one audience member who just had to shout about the Rick James bit, he took it in stride and even imitated it at one point. His funniest bit was him talking about how he time traveled! I won't make this too long but Dave was very funny, glad to see him back, if you're a true fan of Daves, check him out if he comes near you, definitely worth it!

  • Dave Chappelle 1 star act

by MsClassAct on 6/17/12The Orpheum Theatre Memphis - MemphisRating: 1 out of 5

I attended this event because I am a huge fan of Mr. Chappelle's previous stand-up comedy and TV show. To be quite honest, I did not know what to expect since he has been out of the lime light for a while and I'm am sad to say that the show was a big let down. First off, I did not appreciate the second hand smoke He smoked about 5 cigarettes on stage. Second, he was about an hour and a half late for his set. I don't recall him offering an apology for his tardiness. Third, it seem as if he just winged the entire show and did not make any preparation for it. But in his defense, he did warn the crowd that he did not have an jokes to tell. At first I thought it was just part of his act but as the show progressed the statement proved to be true. Also, the crowd was not very nice and at one point in the show it turned into a yelling match amongst the spectators; the crowd blurted out questions as if it was a press conference. On a positive note, near the end of the show I did see a glimpse of the old Chappelle comic who once told great stories and thought provoking jokes. The show was definitely not worth the ticket price that was paid. I do wish that he will pull it together and come back in full gear.

Dave Chappelle is naturally a very funny guy and a great story teller. A lot of improv and used the crowd in his show quite a bit. Felt more like hanging out with a buddy, would definately recommend!

  • Dave's developing his craft

by TT32145 on 6/16/12The Orpheum Theatre Memphis - MemphisRating: 4 out of 5

If you're looking for skit comedy like what was exibited on the Chapelle show, then you'll be sadly disappointed. If you're a TRUE Chapelle fan then you can appreciate the impromtu craft of Dave's comedic ability. Dave's abiltiy to feed off what is given from the crowd is sheer genius. Just wish there had been more of a consistent flow once he got started.

I was excited to see Dave Chappelle but I ended up falling asleep while he was on stage with no prepared material. I Ieft early to catch the end of the NBA game in hopes my night wasn't a total loss. Very disappointed.

  • Dave is back!!!

by Kevinrey on 6/15/12Robinson Center Music Hall - Little RockRating: 5 out of 5

It was great to finally see Dave after all these years and he has only gotten better.

  • Not the same Old routine

by LadyOfTheHouse1976 on 6/15/12Robinson Center Music Hall - Little RockRating: 4 out of 5

Dave is evolving. His new act is still a work in progress but it's different. I had no idea how amazing he was at improv.

  • Good show

by DivaInTraining on 6/15/12Robinson Center Music Hall - Little RockRating: 4 out of 5

The show was great. However, the tickets said the show was to start at 7:00 and it did not start until 7:30! Then we saw the opening acts and when they were finished which was around 8:15 there was a 45 MINUTE wait before Dave came on. That is completely UNACCEPTABLE! There was no need for such a long intermission!!! Some people left before the main comic even came on, they just got tired of the waiting! Oh, and then we couldn't even take photos without fear of being kicked out of the venue!!! I for one would have loved to get a few photos to show to friends and family.

  • Unforgettable experience.

by flyingIguana on 6/15/12Robinson Center Music Hall - Little RockRating: 5 out of 5

Yeah, it's an unpolished act for the little time you get an act. A lot of the time was spent interacting with the audience. For those that went and were disappointed by such things, I'd suggest learning to read. Ever since he's been popping up at comedy clubs for "surprise" visits etc. it has been this way. I've been to many live shows and concerts over the years. One of the best experiences ever was right here. He may not exactly be in his prime, but he was still brilliant even if some of the timing was a little off. I also got to bum a square off him at the end of the show while he was on stage. When keepin' it real goes fantastically right.

There were glimpses of the comedic genius of Dave Chappelle but the show had a lack of focus and there were long pauses of silence which broke the flow allowing for some real idiotic heckling by audience members. It seemed like Dave has lost his timing and trying to get it back.

  • Def worth the $$

by Emalou1122 on 6/15/12Robinson Center Music Hall - Little RockRating: 5 out of 5

Loved the entire thing, even the audience interaction

  • Dave Chappelle is hilarious!

by CarrieAnn76 on 6/15/12Robinson Center Music Hall - Little RockRating: 5 out of 5

Dave was so funny! He did a lot of improv from the hecklers in the crowd. He's a brilliant comedian. We laughed so much our face hurt.

  • Dave was unprepared and lacked enthusiasm

by LiLJDeeZy on 6/15/12The Orpheum Theatre Memphis - MemphisRating: 3 out of 5

The crowd was extra weak so therefore the ticket prices were ridiculous because of his idea of coming out unprepared. He was still funny but not worth it to me. Glad I saw him but i don't recommend him to anyone unless he starts to actually care about comedy again which he acts like he does not.

  • Dave is the man!!!

by Roester on 6/15/12Robinson Center Music Hall - Little RockRating: 4 out of 5

I love Dave chappelle, he is my hands down favorite comic and he was just as funny as ever unfortunately the crowd was either too drunk or most likely just too stupid to let him do his show. People want to yell dumb things like pancakes, diarrhea, and last and most ignorantly "call the hogs." Luckily Dave is good enough to make good with a bad situation. Go see him any chance u get unless he's in Arkansas.

  • Very, very dissappointing!

by Dovie59 on 6/15/12Robinson Center Music Hall - Little RockRating: 1 out of 5

couldn't wait to attend. Took off work early. No routine. Only answered hecklers.

  • Hysterical

by LMRP on 6/15/12Robinson Center Music Hall - Little RockRating: 5 out of 5

I really did not know what to expect as he has been out of comedy for a while. I was overwhelmed! Dave Chappelle was HYSTRICAL! I laughed, cried, and laughed even more! I sure hope he continues his comedy act!

  • I didn't want it to end!

by Fillthegreat on 6/15/12Robinson Center Music Hall - Little RockRating: 5 out of 5

I was septic after seeing all the bad reviews, but it was Classic David Chappelle! Worth the money I paid.

  • Don't waste your money

by Davidoo420 on 6/15/12Robinson Center Music Hall - Little RockRating: 1 out of 5

Really don't waste your time or money, he was not funny at all, found myself almost asleep!

  • Dave Chappelle was great!

by 212002 on 6/15/12Robinson Center Music Hall - Little RockRating: 5 out of 5

I laughed all night! He still has it. I wish his show was still on!

  • Way too much audience participation

by Gypsygrl81 on 6/15/12The Orpheum Theatre Memphis - MemphisRating: 2 out of 5

Dave did not have any prepared material, instead opting for more stream of conscience/interact with the audience. Given how naturally funny he is this may work elsewhere but unfortunately our audience was full of drunk moronic frat boys who kept yelling out comments - mainly things from Chappelle's Show. It was part heckling, part press conference (Who are you voting for?), 100% annoying. Even when he would take a comment and start to formulate a story then someone would yell out something else random to knock him off base. I don't think he was happy with our audience and just did not seem to care at all. Upset that I shelled out the $120 to listen to small bits of comedy, awkward silence, and stupid audience members reliving his show (prompting several rounds of "shut the ___ up" towards those stupid people).
