About

Dave Chappelle Live Performance and Tour

Dave Chappelle, mastermind behind sketch comedy goldmine Chappelle's Show, made a triumphant return to stand-up comedy in 2013. While he's beloved for his famous impersonations of Rick James and Prince, Chappelle doesn't rely on old material for his stand-up act, treating fans to an all-original show featuring extensive improvisation as he interacts with audiences. At his 2013 performances on The Oddball Comedy & Curiosity Festival, which he co-headlined with Flight of the Conchords, Chappelle had fans rolling on the floor, building anticipation for his highly coveted 2014 tour dates.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT

Born David Khari Webber Chappelle in Washington, D.C., Dave Chappelle studied theatre arts in high school before moving to New York City to pursue standup comedy. Despite getting booed off stage at the Apollo Theater's infamous "Amateur Night," he remained resilient, going on to make a name for himself on the New York comedy circuit. Following several successful film appearances in the '90s, including a starring role in 1998 cult classic Half Baked, Chappelle debuted his namesake sketch comedy show on Comedy Central in 2003, finding both critical and commercial success. In 2006 he released Dave Chappelle's Block Party, a concert film set in Brooklyn featuring performances by Kanye West, The Roots, and a temporarily-reunited Fugees.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY

"Funniest live performance I've witnessed to date. You will be quoting Chappelle after the show. I was laughing so hard that it started to hurt. Great show from start to finish."

"Dave...he is a comedic genius and one of the best ever. He was amazing and  I wished I could have gotten in line and gone to the second show!"

"He was hilarious. Talked about some of his history and was not afraid to get the audience involved. I had a great time."

    Ok

by HazeKing on 6/14/12The Orpheum Theatre Memphis - Memphis

Dave seemed out of it and depressed. Some people in the crowd wouldn't stop shouting things at him, which was very distracting. Overall it was a C performance. Especially comparing to when I saw him in Atlanta a year before the Chappelle Show debut.

    Chappelle was underwhelming!

by Kereme on 6/14/12The Orpheum Theatre Memphis - Memphis

After waiting over an hour for him to come on stage, I just knew I would experience gut busting laughter. That wasn't the case. With his own admission, he had nothing prepared for the show and if it wasn't for the audience blurting out questions, it wouldn't seem like a press conference. I can only truly recall four jokes but the rest was kind of disappointing. He mentioned that he was backstage contemplating whether or not to come out. With that performance, he would have done better telling the Orpheum "I ain't going out there bitch... give em' their money back!" in his Rick James voice.

    Long wait but worth it

by BubbaScales on 6/14/12The Orpheum Theatre Memphis - Memphis

Had to wait a long time (almost an hour) between opener and Dave. Apparently there was some issue with the promoter? Anyways, the Orpheum was smart enough to keep the bars open so people didn't go crazy. I think the crowd was a little aggravated and there were a lot of people in the crowd yelling very stupid things. Also, when Dave was wrapping up people started leaving. I think Dave isn't famous enough anymore to be able to treat audiences like that on a Tuesday night. Oh, and the Orpheum is a miserable place to see a show. Building is nice and in good condition, but there is absolutely ZERO leg room.

    Good show

by wnzmtc on 6/14/12The Orpheum Theatre Memphis - Memphis

Show was funny overall. The opening comedic act was a little dated but entertaining overall. Dave was good but may have had issues controlling the crowd. Hecklers eventually became distracting causing the show to seem longer than it was.

    Not what I was expecting

by Anonymous on 6/14/12The Orpheum Theatre Memphis - Memphis

Seems like Dave would have done well if the crowd would have been quiet and let him do his thing. It was almost like he expected it and instead of trying to ignore it he made everyone that paid to see him suffer for it. He had his moments, don't get me wrong. I did laugh a few times. I really blame the Orpheum security for allowing it to happen.

    Dave Chappelle was unfortunate

by MemphisOrpheumGoer on 6/14/12The Orpheum Theatre Memphis - Memphis

Looking back at his performance, I am not sure I can even recall any real stand up bits. He just took heckling from the crowd and made comments on it. He also made a comment that he should not be doing comedy anymore and I totally agree. When someone's heart isn't in what they are doing, then it is always a bad result. Also, he made us wait an hour forty-five minutes before performing. Major let down!

I can't say enough bad things about this show. The event started at 7, Dave Chappelle finally made his was out onstage at about 8:45 and did nothing but smoke cigarettes and ramble on about nothing. We left after about 15 or 20 minutes. After talking with people who stayed longer, apparently it got no better. It was a complete waste of time and money. I wish he'd never come out so I could at least try to get a refund.

    Hilarious but....

by Memphisgurl on 6/14/12The Orpheum Theatre Memphis - Memphis

We got out tickets for this sold out suprise show and coudn't wait to see him. I love his style of comedy. If you are looking for him to relive the sketch comedy from the show, this show isn't for you. I was happy with the overall show, he didn't seem to have a 'routine' per say, but he kept me laughing. He was interacting with the crowd which got to be too much in the end. He also appeared an hour and a half later than anticipated, and was smoking cigarettes the entire set...if you love his stand up go see it, but if you are looking to see Rick James skits it ain't happening!

The only person that was funny was Prescott! If I knew then what I know now, the ticketd would not have been purchased.

    He had no material

by PeezyNSK on 6/14/12The Orpheum Theatre Memphis - Memphis

If you're going to charge $52+fees for a ticket, it'd be a little nice if you had some material planned, instead of spending 2+ hours chatting back and forth with hecklers. All comedians know how to put hecklers in their place and every other comedian would have. Instead, those of us (the vast majority) who wanted to see a stand-up comedy show got robbed because Chappelle catered to the heckling idiots instead. I'm a huge fan of Chappelle's previous stand up material and this was NOTHING like it. I lost a lot of respect for Chappelle that night. For as expensive as the tickets were, he showed up with no material and gave a half-hearted performance that was entirely unfair to those of us who don't want to sidetrack the show by shouting out dated TV show references.

    Dave Chappelle!!

by JimboBagginsPotter on 6/14/12Robinson Center - LITTLE ROCK

Hilarious show. Dave is at his best when he runs out of material and just starts talking about random things. The material was also solid, although admittedly not as good as his past performances, probably because he had set the bar so high. Overall I would definitely recommend buying tickets. It's Dave Chappelle!!!!

    Good, not great

by Bmalenius on 6/13/12Orpheum Theater - Memphis

Dave's stories were very funny. His interaction with the crowd was good. The last 20 minutes were slow. The crowd sucked, yelling out the same crap over and over again. Overall, liked Dave.

    Dave Chappelle is finished!

by GWBJR on 6/13/12The Orphium - Memphis

This was so disapointing to see. The man didn't even have any jokes and just stood around talking to the crowd all night. I left while Dave was still on stage and so did a lot of people there. The first comedian was funnier than Dave. Sad

    Very Disappointing

by JSixx on 6/13/12Orpheum Theatre - Memphis

Awful. Had no material. No flow. Couldn't finish a thought. No improv. 2 hours you'll never get back. I understand people have off nights, but from some of other reviews I'm seeing, it appears he is playing off his fame and just taking people's hard earned money. I wouldn't even have called it testing out new material. He should be ashamed.

    Real Fans Only

by ConsciousConcepts on 6/13/12Orpheum Theater - Memphis

I attended the Memphis show and I can honestly say that I was, in a word, baffled by the crowd. First, the crowd was very diverse. Excellent because that is what a Dave Chappelle crowd offers. He has taken comedy and used it to cross lines of age and race. Dave has been an artist that I classify as the Richard of our day and age. The comedy event in Memphis never had a chance to even succeed. This is because the crowd began shouting questions and ignorant random things from the very beginning. The show and his presentation reminds me of Richard when he was at the phase of his career that had him giving concerts based primarily of improv work. He had me thinking that I would surely hear a "Mongo Santa Maria" type of bit, which I did, and that was perfect. He also gave us some new material that gave us a reminder of the genus that he is. Real fans will be able to appreciate the way his work has evolved and the courage that it takes to make such a drastically different move. No, he did not do sketch and bits, he did his show based on his interactions and based on what the crowd gave him. The problem is that today's crowds seem to only want bit work and pre-written jokes. The problem with many of the reviews here is that people were expecting him to come and perform "sketch comedy". Things that you can easily see if you turn on an ole episode of his highly successful show. Pay attention and you will see that none of his stand up work has ever really referenced the show. Many of the people at the show seem to have only heard of his show because of Half Baked and his television series. His body of work is much more than that. The show ended and he was still gracious afterward. Allowing us to take a photo with him and even spend a brief moment speaking to us before hopping on his bike to enjoy the city. I recommend this show to true Dave fans and to fans that want to see a true witty and gifted talent at work. This is not a television show and this is not your average stand up. Respect the work and give it a chance to develop and you will have a truly great time.

    Dave Chappelle, Still Genius

by SadClownHappyTimes on 5/12/11The Punchline - Sacramentio

Dave Chappelle is probably the most influential comedian of my lifetime, being as I was to young to witness or be aware of the other greats of comedy such as the great Richard Prior or George Carlton during their primes, one of the only stars I have seen rise in comedy is the great Dave Chappelle. With today's technology the rapid exchange of information throughout the world, the idea of comedy is often lost on people. The essential idea of comedy is the idea of the critic, the cynic, the jester. This idea, for the most part is lost upon most when they just expect to laugh at a comedy show, but they ignore the reason they are laughing, They laugh because the comedian makes you think, the comedian presents you with a series of dots that when your mind connects them and you see the big picture, you are left with no other response but to laugh. Dave Chappelle offered up his amazing ability to present you with this perception of reality on a weekly basis on, what Inside the Actor's Studio's James Lipton Called a groundbreaking series, Chappelle's Show. This show gave us not only critique of society but also the occasional poo joke, which we all can enjoy. Seeing Dave Chappelle on stage for the first time and seeing him in any media for the first time in since he appeared on the highly respected Inside the Actor's Studio in '08 to interview the Show's Host (who had picked Chappelle himself) James Lipton, was an incredible and a once in a lifetime experience. This show was not only worth the price of admission because of the hilarious jokes Chappelle had prepared for the show, but because of the honesty Chappelle presented his audience that makes his comedy so meaningful. Although subtle and lost upon most of the audience, who wanted nothing more than for Chappelle to perform the old jokes that they could anticipate like the "let me call Charline of Thursday" joke, Chappelle presented his audience with not only a perception on Society, Hollywood and Fame but a glimpse into his life. The only thing I could complain on this show was that I will likely not get to see Dave soon due to his justified distaste of the fake and shady fame industry. Come back soon Dave, still Genius

    Smoking not cool

by Anonymous on 4/30/11Punch Line Comedy Club - Sacramento - Sacramento

Chappelle was funny, it was great Kevin hart came on stage, the one thing that me and my wife were disappointed about is that we were sitting the front, while Dave smoked the whole show, my wife is 4 months pregnant. It would have been nice if we would have been told before we were sat in the front that he would be smoking durin the show.

    Dave does it right

by Aupoivre on 4/16/11Cobb's Comedy Club - San Francisco

I much rather see Dave in a more personable setting. Cobb theater is just the right spot to host one of our generations greatest comedians. He likes to just randomly book the spot and usually at last minutes notice. This reduces the number of scalpers which shows he isn't in it for the money. The show lasted until 3 am which more than gave me my money's worth. Still coming up with fresh material and really interacting with the guests. I would love to see him again.
