About

Dave Chappelle Live Performance and Tour

Dave Chappelle, mastermind behind sketch comedy goldmine Chappelle's Show, made a triumphant return to stand-up comedy in 2013. While he's beloved for his famous impersonations of Rick James and Prince, Chappelle doesn't rely on old material for his stand-up act, treating fans to an all-original show featuring extensive improvisation as he interacts with audiences. At his 2013 performances on The Oddball Comedy & Curiosity Festival, which he co-headlined with Flight of the Conchords, Chappelle had fans rolling on the floor, building anticipation for his highly coveted 2014 tour dates.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT

Born David Khari Webber Chappelle in Washington, D.C., Dave Chappelle studied theatre arts in high school before moving to New York City to pursue standup comedy. Despite getting booed off stage at the Apollo Theater's infamous "Amateur Night," he remained resilient, going on to make a name for himself on the New York comedy circuit. Following several successful film appearances in the '90s, including a starring role in 1998 cult classic Half Baked, Chappelle debuted his namesake sketch comedy show on Comedy Central in 2003, finding both critical and commercial success. In 2006 he released Dave Chappelle's Block Party, a concert film set in Brooklyn featuring performances by Kanye West, The Roots, and a temporarily-reunited Fugees.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY

"Funniest live performance I've witnessed to date. You will be quoting Chappelle after the show. I was laughing so hard that it started to hurt. Great show from start to finish."

"Dave...he is a comedic genius and one of the best ever. He was amazing and  I wished I could have gotten in line and gone to the second show!"

"He was hilarious. Talked about some of his history and was not afraid to get the audience involved. I had a great time."

    Sucked

by kdwilkinson on 6/14/12The Orpheum Theatre Memphis - Memphis

Ughhhh I want my money back . I love Dave but damn - there was no show - no act - yea he's talented for the fact he literally plays off the audience but when the audience sucks and keeps shouting every 10 seconds it becomes a horrible experience quick. Aftr the first act which was a local comedy guy who was alright ( couldn't understand him talk) we waited 45 more minutes for chappelle to even get there . And it was just okay - after talking my boyfriend into going and him making jokes that it was going to suck I really wanted to prove him wrong and Dave kill it , but that didn't happen. Sucks because Dave could literally blow other comedians out of the water if he sat down and planned a show . But guess he's not looking for fame anymore - just wish he didn't waste my money - Dave give me my money back -

    Damn Hecklers and Drunks!!!

by BarbieJ1971 on 6/14/12The Orpheum Theatre Memphis - Memphis

Even though the show was supposed to start at 7 it didn't actually get underway until 9:00. They called in a local comedian to fill the gap and then a DJ played for another hour or so allowing the crowd to get restless and at the same time completely inebriated. By the time Dave took to the stage quite a few were restless and drunk. Then what should have been a hilarious show turned into to drunk filled heckles and random shout outs from the drunk audience members, complete with one idiot who could not seem to get past the size of Dave's arms. At no point did security step in to remove the hecklers and it seemed as though Dave had no control or did not care that his show had gone wildly out of control. By the end large groups of people started to leave and Dave decided he would rather go hang out in a blues club and ended the show. There were a few funny moments but not enough to counter the rude and inconsiderate hecklers that dominated the show.

Dave Chappelle was horrible-I want my money back!!

by CissyR on 6/14/12The Orpheum Theatre Memphis - Memphis

I purchased these tickets for my husband as an early father's day gift because he loves Dave Chappelle. To say the least, he isn't too crazy about the man after his show!! First of all, he started the show way late. Show started at 7:00 and he started at around 8:40.....several people sitting in front of us actually got up and left saying "he must not be here". Second, he didn't tell any jokes-he let the audience keep asking him questions and heckle him and that was very disturbing to most people there. People in the audience were even screaming to the people heckling him to Shut Up-except they used a couple more words along with it. The first thing Dave Chappelle said when he came out on stage was "I ain't got no jokes to tell"-well he was exactly right about that!! I think he may have told 3 jokes total in the hour and 45 minutes that we stayed. Everyone around us was talking about how horrible it was. He had no jokes, and could not control the audience...he would take long pauses in between speaking, almost waiting for someone to scream out something. One person in the audience kept yelling out "Come on Dave"...we all kept waiting for the show to start, but it never did. Obviously, Dave Chappelle did not want to be there...so, with all that being said, the JOKE of the night was the Show itself!!

Dave Chappelle was worth the experience

by chandyman on 6/14/12The Orpheum Theatre Memphis - Memphis

Never appeared to really get warmed up. Either due to audience interference or was that his new format? But due to his popularity, the crowd seemed to hang every word, thinking ...he's going to unleash any moment now. The crowd did get restless towards the end. But perhaps due to his loyal fan following he managed to maintain control. A bit disappointed, but still a fan.

    Chappelle was awesome!!

by WillyB1972 on 6/14/12The Orpheum Theatre Memphis - Memphis

Dave Chappelle was very funny. If your coming out to see his act from Comedy Central, then stay at home. Very engaging with the audience even though the Memphis crowd consisted of a bunch of young white frat boys who wanted to hear him say, Rick James Bitch. Great show!!!

    Awful, Just Awful!

by Harbortowngirl on 6/14/12The Orpheum Theatre Memphis - Memphis

Dave Chappelle's performance was not what I expected. He did not tell many jokes, and the stories he shared were not funny either. I almost felt sorry for him. It was as though he was borderline depressed or he had a strong feeling of underachievement. I must say I was extremely embarrased by the heckling from the audience. It was ridiculous. His long pauses between his stories allowed for the hecklers to cut in and scream to him aloud. I could not believe he allowed it to continue. It was very disturbing to those of us that were sober enough to try to enjoy the show.

    Reasonable upsetting; c'mon dave.

by blink182house on 6/14/12The Orpheum Theatre Memphis - Memphis

Been a big fan of Dave's for years now, before the show and during, always loved watching stand ups. Extremely excited to find he was coming through Memphis, most people I enjoy don't come here. Bought x4 tickets immediately. Should've saved the money. He was late, had absolutely NO material, just seemed like he didn't want to be there and needed some quick cash by doing a quick headliner. Really upsetting. Am I still a fan, definitely, but would I be skeptical of buying tickets again YES. I'll just watch video footage instead.

He seemed unprepared for the event and the crowd began to take over. There were moments of greatness but they were scattered amongst the crowds heckling (due to the fact that the show began at 7pm and Dave appeared at 8:40)

    Dave Chappelle

by wimzy on 6/14/12The Orpheum Theatre Memphis - Memphis

We are fans of Dave Chappelle and we were so excited to see him live. We were not happy at all with the performance. I couldn't hear him and he didn't come on stage for so long that we spent a lot of time in the lobby making small talk and having cocktails. In short---he bombed! Was he drunk or something?

    Dave was just being himself

by TSUApr on 6/14/12The Orpheum Theatre Memphis - Memphis

I think the show was nice and laid back. Others may have expected a whole standup comedy routine, but I read the reviews before purchasing my tickets and I told my friends before they purchased their tickets too. We were all pleased with the show because we knew what to expect. This guy is naturally funny, and we really got to see that "down to earth, regular guy that can find humor in everything" side of him.

Too much heckling and not enough material

by Mikernews2 on 6/14/12The Orpheum Theatre Memphis - Memphis

Dave! Don't allow the audience so much participation. They ran away with the show.

The worst show I have ever been to. He was a hour and a half late and let the crowd control the show.

In one word: disappointing. I did not have expectations of seeing a rehash of the Chappelle Show or Killing Me Softly or other standup performances from years ago. I did expect more prepared material than it seems Chappelle presented. A faction of the crowd (mainly drunken frat boys clad in white baseball hats) tried to interject themselves into the show by constantly yelling garbage throughout the entire performance (e.g., "Do Rick James", "Where's Charlie Murphy?", "Where's the weed, Dave?", etc.). While the incessant heckling was disappointing (I paid too much money for tickets to have the event consistently distracted by Ole Miss fratboys), equally disappointing was that Chappelle just rolled with the heckling and didn't try to shut it down. I was fine, and even expected him to, roll with some of the heckling but enough was enough. As brilliant and experienced as a standup comedian he is, he could have shut it down without being a jerk to the audience. There were flashes of absolute brilliance but often he would begin a joke or story then the catcalls wold come and he wold follow that rabbit trail and not return to what might have been an outstanding bit. The show reminded me of a football game in which the teams start out flat. Then, once momentum begins to build, a streaker disrupts the game and all momentum is lost. It seemed as if there were dozens of streakers that night.

A HUGE waste of sixty bucks

by CGmemphis on 6/14/12The Orpheum Theatre Memphis - Memphis

this is what happens when you mix a room full of idiots with a performer who just doesn't care and has nothing prepared. He basically spent an hour and a half in a Q&A with the audience in a room of 2000 people. Which might not be that bad if the audience weren't A) drunk and B) yelling idiotic things like "DAVE TAKE OFF YOUR SHIRT!!!!" The sad thing is Dave was still funny through all the heckling. But because there were so many interruptions, and because he refused to even try to put a stop to it, the morons were just encouraged to do it more, so it just became painful to sit through. I did laugh a few times, and he had some obviously prepared material, but that was about 20% of the act, at best. The rest was completely ruined by the crowd.

    Chapelle

    Chapelle was horrible!

by DisappointedDavid on 6/14/12The Orpheum Theatre Memphis - Memphis

I have never wasted money as I did when I bought these tickets. Dave Chapelle owes me $130! First, it started over an hour and a half later than expected. We had to put up with a local comedian who was no comedian. Then, we had to put up with a crappy DJ who played crappy music that was so loud I could not hear the couple in the next seats talking to us. Then, when Dave FINALLY came on stage, all he did was talk to members of the audience as they yelled out stupid things to him. He was NOT FUNNY at all. He acted like he couldn't have cared less about being funny. All he did was want to talk. We left after less than 45 minutes. He was pathetic. I wouldn't pay a dollar to see him again.

    C'mon Dave

by Mega85 on 6/14/12The Orpheum Theatre Memphis - Memphis

It was an unsual comedy show. There was more audience interaction, as opposed to joke telling. Regardless, I'm still glad that I got to see Dave. I still think he's funny, and I hope that he can come up with new material for future shows. I'd like to see him again, but I'd rather it be a more typical stand-up routine.

    Ok

by HazeKing on 6/14/12The Orpheum Theatre Memphis - Memphis

Dave seemed out of it and depressed. Some people in the crowd wouldn't stop shouting things at him, which was very distracting. Overall it was a C performance. Especially comparing to when I saw him in Atlanta a year before the Chappelle Show debut.

    Chappelle was underwhelming!

by Kereme on 6/14/12The Orpheum Theatre Memphis - Memphis

After waiting over an hour for him to come on stage, I just knew I would experience gut busting laughter. That wasn't the case. With his own admission, he had nothing prepared for the show and if it wasn't for the audience blurting out questions, it wouldn't seem like a press conference. I can only truly recall four jokes but the rest was kind of disappointing. He mentioned that he was backstage contemplating whether or not to come out. With that performance, he would have done better telling the Orpheum "I ain't going out there bitch... give em' their money back!" in his Rick James voice.
