Dark Star Orchestra on Tour
More than just a tribute band, the seven members of the Dark Star Orchestra are dedicated to the Grateful Dead live experience, best known for playing full setlists picked from their 2,000+ concerts. The Grateful Dead's live show is legendary, a catalog of improvisation traded and celebrated across decades. The Dark Star Orchestra re-creates the Dead's intra-band interplay and pastoral guitar soloing. Remarkably devoted and true to the source material, DSO tailors their arrangements, gear and tempos to the era of the evening. Some nights find the DSO creating original setlists, playing sets from the Jerry Garcia Band or even jamming with members of the Dead themselves.
Dark Star Orchestra in Concert
Formed in Chicago in 1997, Dark Star Orchestra provides generations of fans with the chance to experience entire Grateful Dead sets, song by song. Named after "Dark Star," a part of the Dead's set known for exploratory jams, DSO rose to national prominence in 1998 when Mike Gordon and John Fishman of Phish joined them for a performance of the Dead's 1983 Halloween show. DSO promptly became a touring sensation: At 2,800 shows and counting, DSO have played more shows than the Grateful Dead themselves. They ultimately enlisted keyboardist Rob Barraco of Phil Lesh and Friends, the Other Ones and the 2003 touring version of the Dead. The DSO have played Bonnaroo and Milwaukee's SummerFest, and they've been hosting their own annual fests for years - the Dark Star Jubilee in Ohio and the Jam in the Sand in Jamaica. Perhaps the most important honor for DSO, though, is enlisting actual members of the Grateful Dead, having performed on stage accompanied by Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Bill Kreutzmann, Donna Jean Godchaux, Vince Welnick and Tom Constanten. A 2018 show even found guitarist Jeff Mattson playing Jerry Garcia's custom-made guitar, "Wolf," which the Dead founder used for two decades.

Thompson Pt. sucks getting people into the show. Takes way too long
Band was great- Stone Pony way oversold and was so crowded you could barely move. Recco- sit outside the venue for free!
its hard standing 4.5 hours on the concrete , band was great
Dark Star was great however my son needs to sit in the disabled area. I understand having to give up my seat for someone that actually needs it but we were separated for most of the show. The venue was Stone Pony Summer Stage. Other venues set it up so at least 1 person can stay with whoever is in the disabled area. Also the view was literally the side of the stage which was blocked by equipment so you really couldn't see anything worthy. This was his first time experiencing DSO and I would have loved to been with him. I do not foresee us returning to this venue.
Love this band . Have seen this band at this venue before and had a blast. Unfortunately this time it was completely oversold and so crowded we left .
Band great! Stony Pony way overcrowded strong urine smell throughout. Food stand next to port a John disgusting. Forced to leave after 1st set. Could not move
Except. For the place being overpacked and no way to move around The show is great. The band rocked out as usual Shout out to the band and especially skippppppyyyy
Like a herd of cattle in a pen!!!..........REDICULOUS!!!
Inside the venue it was insane. Ticketmaster sold too many tickets. It was wall to wall people. I left at intermission and listened from outside. Wasted my money on purchasing tickets.
The show was over sold there was no room anywhere. Some of the staff (Rich) were very polite and helpful and they would be the only reason I’d ever go again. I’m diabetic and there’s no way I could ever eat anything that was offered plus I don’t drink and there’s nothing drawing me back unless Jerry returns. The most disappointing aspect about the show was that I didn’t get in until the third song because of the line and there was nowhere to stand. If I ever return I will sit outside and enjoy the show with proper food and drink.
Covered the Englishtown 77 show splendidly!! Made everybody smile on a hot night on the Jersey shore!! Dark Star consistently brings authentic Grateful Dead sound and vibe. Thank you for a real good time!!
The first time I saw Dark Star Orchestra it was a much smaller indoor venue and didn’t have that festival feel or great sound. This show at The Greek was truly amazing, like Dead shows of old. The sound quality and the overall vibe exceeded all expectations.
Each time I see DSO they blow me away. They are really great at what they do. Every single member of this band is so talented. The crowd is really great too. It’s always a beautiful experience.
I don't know where to start. The entire experience was fabulous, JGB to DSO, and the REX'S foundation Marching band !!! It's absolutely incredible !! It was a blast to see each band and then end the day with the beautiful Ms. Lisa Mackey. I left feeling like I owe more money for my ticket, entertainment value above and beyond !! Thanks REX !!
What to say? The Dark Star Orchestra brings the Dead to Life :-)))))
I really fine rendition the grateful dead experience Best Grateful Dead cover band. Great anchors
I had the tape from 7/13/84 In my collection during the 80s, it was one of my favorites and I listened to it countless times. The DSO recreation from that show was spectacular
The intoxicating sound of Grateful Dead was relived 40 years later at the historical Greek Theatre. Wholesome sounds and gentle vibrations reverberating between Dark Star Orchestra, Melvin Seals & Special Guests and a sea of enchanting Deadheads was more than magical. The Greek played her part in supporting perfect sound and lighting, warmth and cool fog rolling in from The City contributed to the mysticism. Kudos to Cameron Sears & The Rex Foundation for putting on the sweetness we all felt. I imagine Jerry was quite proud…& Bill Walton too.
Geez...should I be on DSO tour? They put on another fantastic show. I was in the "Phil"Zone and the sound was mostly great. Occasionally, I would have wanted more guitar and less keys in the mix. It happened a couple of times throughout the show, but 90% fantastic! The playing was 100% fantastic!
We’ve seen several shows this summer at The Greek Theatre. The venue is the best for enjoying your summer shows! Plenty of staff and security. As I woman walking around I always felt safe. The bathrooms are spotless. Really no bad view. I’ve been on either side and never had any obstructed views. I prefer the sides on the 1 side because the sun isn’t in your eyes. The whole stadium is stone steps and seats. The seats are just numbered but it’s just one long row of concrete. I bring a cushion to sit in and it’s awesome not sitting on hard rock.
