Dark Star Orchestra on Tour

More than just a tribute band, the seven members of the Dark Star Orchestra are dedicated to the Grateful Dead live experience, best known for playing full setlists picked from their 2,000+ concerts. The Grateful Dead's live show is legendary, a catalog of improvisation traded and celebrated across decades. The Dark Star Orchestra re-creates the Dead's intra-band interplay and pastoral guitar soloing. Remarkably devoted and true to the source material, DSO tailors their arrangements, gear and tempos to the era of the evening. Some nights find the DSO creating original setlists, playing sets from the Jerry Garcia Band or even jamming with members of the Dead themselves.

Dark Star Orchestra in Concert

Formed in Chicago in 1997, Dark Star Orchestra provides generations of fans with the chance to experience entire Grateful Dead sets, song by song. Named after "Dark Star," a part of the Dead's set known for exploratory jams, DSO rose to national prominence in 1998 when Mike Gordon and John Fishman of Phish joined them for a performance of the Dead's 1983 Halloween show. DSO promptly became a touring sensation: At 2,800 shows and counting, DSO have played more shows than the Grateful Dead themselves. They ultimately enlisted keyboardist Rob Barraco of Phil Lesh and Friends, the Other Ones and the 2003 touring version of the Dead. The DSO have played Bonnaroo and Milwaukee's SummerFest, and they've been hosting their own annual fests for years - the Dark Star Jubilee in Ohio and the Jam in the Sand in Jamaica. Perhaps the most important honor for DSO, though, is enlisting actual members of the Grateful Dead, having performed on stage accompanied by Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Bill Kreutzmann, Donna Jean Godchaux, Vince Welnick and Tom Constanten. A 2018 show even found guitarist Jeff Mattson playing Jerry Garcia's custom-made guitar, "Wolf," which the Dead founder used for two decades.

  • Too much too little

by Lindamosk2 on 11/18/24The Capitol Theatre - Port ChesterRating: 4 out of 5

I thought the first half was excellent and if you want a copy band that sounds exactly like the GD, this is it. The second half was a waste of my time and money. At least when the GD played drums it was interesting. This didn't come close. The other songs were just OK except for the Traffic cover. Was disappointed and wouldn't do this again. I have been to over 100 GD shows but rather listen to Sirius or my collection and reminis on my own. If they were a little more inventive and not trying to be an exact copy it would've been better. Disappointed.

  • The crowds at Capitol are just plain rude

by John on 11/18/24The Capitol Theatre - Port ChesterRating: 4 out of 5

Dark Star Orchestra is the premier GD tribute band. The music is just incredible - truly like being at a Dead show. They always bring the fire. Problem is, the crowds at the shows in Portchester have lost the spirit of the scene. Instead of being a community, the floor now consists of a bunch of jerks protecting their own territory. "Don't stand in front of me!" "There's no room for you here!" "I can't stand next to that guy, he dances too much." I don't know about you, but in the future, I think I'll catch DSO in friendlier places than New York.

  • Te show was fun, and the sound was excellent.

  • LIVE 1985 DEAD

by Tennessee Jed on 9/17/24South Side Stage - HarrisburgRating: 5 out of 5

    Awesome concert recreation from 1985. Couldn’t have been more authentic. I thought Bob Weir was actually on stage! Phil’s bass bombs everywhere! Brent on keys! Only one problem, it was a Saturday night with no One More Saturday Night?? Great job DSO. Loved the hippy tunes at the end. (~);-}

  • Best way to toast a lost relative

by JD on 9/17/24South Side Stage - HarrisburgRating: 5 out of 5

What a beautiful night to hear DSO jam by the stars in Harrisburg. It was particularly meaningful to hear ‘He’s gone’ and ‘Black Peter’ to honor a deceased relative who passed earlier that day. Thanks for a great show and a memorable night!

  • Best Dead experience going

by Jimbo on 9/17/24South Side Stage - HarrisburgRating: 5 out of 5

I saw Dead and Company at Sphere about a month ago and Darkstar Orchestra is so much closer to what the Dead was than what Dead and Company is today.

  • 40 year flashback

    by D1 on 8/28/24Thompson's Point - PortlandRating: 5 out of 5

Awesome performance of a show I actually attended 40 year prior at the Philly Spectrum. Flashbacked when they played Morning Dew and Deal...Nothing left to do but Smile, Smile Smile...

  • Awesome venue and show !

by KatyR on 8/27/24Thompson's Point - PortlandRating: 5 out of 5

The band was on, the crowd was chill, the venue was in a beautiful spot on the water, & the only bad part was having my weed confiscated upon entry. That’s different than concerts in Mass. Where they let us keep that.

  • Great time, Great Venue, Great Music

by StevefromMaine on 8/27/24Thompson's Point - PortlandRating: 5 out of 5

DSO brings it again! Love these guys. They had a few minutes left at the end of the show and did some awsome (non-dead) songs (Take a letter maria, Woodstock) it was great!

  • DSO is a not miss show

by Axilla the Hun on 8/26/24Thompson's Point - PortlandRating: 5 out of 5

DSO came to Portland Maine and basically blew most of heads off for 3 hours. Great Half Step, Birdsong in the first set and the Shakedown Morning Dew Sugar Mag 2nd set was off the charts. They are the real deal and then entire evening was so phenomenal words can't express how good the show was. I said to my friend as we left the venue, DSO is a not miss show.

  • The DSO show was spectacular.

by Vern on 8/26/24Thompson's Point - PortlandRating: 5 out of 5

The DSO show was spectacular. The players are all at the top of their game, the sound was perfectly mixed and the set list was phenomenal. The biggest surprise of the evening being the "Take a Letter Maria"and "Woodstock"encore. Loved every minute of the show.

  • Exceptional Evening of Music

by Martimus on 8/26/24Thompson's Point - PortlandRating: 5 out of 5

Thompson's Point can be hit or miss, depending on the weather, the crowd, and the food lines. On Friday, August 23, we saw Dark Star Orchestra perform a 1985 Grateful Dead show, and it was exquisite. Everything about this show was on point, including the music, the atmosphere, the food, and the beer selection. The sunsets at Thompson's Point are poetic, and on this night, it reminded us all of why summer in New England is THE place to be.
