Dark Star Orchestra on Tour

More than just a tribute band, the seven members of the Dark Star Orchestra are dedicated to the Grateful Dead live experience, best known for playing full setlists picked from their 2,000+ concerts. The Grateful Dead's live show is legendary, a catalog of improvisation traded and celebrated across decades. The Dark Star Orchestra re-creates the Dead's intra-band interplay and pastoral guitar soloing. Remarkably devoted and true to the source material, DSO tailors their arrangements, gear and tempos to the era of the evening. Some nights find the DSO creating original setlists, playing sets from the Jerry Garcia Band or even jamming with members of the Dead themselves.

Dark Star Orchestra in Concert

Formed in Chicago in 1997, Dark Star Orchestra provides generations of fans with the chance to experience entire Grateful Dead sets, song by song. Named after "Dark Star," a part of the Dead's set known for exploratory jams, DSO rose to national prominence in 1998 when Mike Gordon and John Fishman of Phish joined them for a performance of the Dead's 1983 Halloween show. DSO promptly became a touring sensation: At 2,800 shows and counting, DSO have played more shows than the Grateful Dead themselves. They ultimately enlisted keyboardist Rob Barraco of Phil Lesh and Friends, the Other Ones and the 2003 touring version of the Dead. The DSO have played Bonnaroo and Milwaukee's SummerFest, and they've been hosting their own annual fests for years - the Dark Star Jubilee in Ohio and the Jam in the Sand in Jamaica. Perhaps the most important honor for DSO, though, is enlisting actual members of the Grateful Dead, having performed on stage accompanied by Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Bill Kreutzmann, Donna Jean Godchaux, Vince Welnick and Tom Constanten. A 2018 show even found guitarist Jeff Mattson playing Jerry Garcia's custom-made guitar, "Wolf," which the Dead founder used for two decades.

  • Jeff fits in perfectly!!!

by Larriot on 1/2/10Rams Head Live! - BaltimoreRating: 5 out of 5

I have seen Dark Star over 15 times. This was probably the best show I've seen. My friends and I didn't know what to expect from the new Jeff Mattson to replace John (in Jerry's spot). He did not only fit in well, but brought a new presence and energy to the stage. This was shocking because John was not an easy spot to fill, and will surely be missed by many. Great energy; the band had a ball and so did everyone else! Must have played 5+ hours of music.

  • Great Show.

This show was much more then we expected. Not just a 2 hour regular concert. These guys jamed for 3 and a half hours and just would not stop. Several of the artist may of been better then their mentors...MT

  • Dark Star is on point

by Denverallover on 12/31/09Rams Head Live! - BaltimoreRating: 5 out of 5

The show was right on, the energy they brought to the room was felt by all! It seemed that it went on and on they put on an excelant play list. It's nice to find a band that you can dance all night long to and be satisfied when it's all said and done! I would shurely see them any time that they pop up on the grid.

I was a little nervous that John was leaving, but I really loved the new guitar player. It was an intense show. The energy in that room was amazing!

by AnnaCate on 12/1/09Nokia Theatre Times Square - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

Dark Star Orchestra is definately the best Grateful Dead cover band out there, and i look forward to seeing them again many more times. The setlist was amazing...Nokia theatre is amazing and its easy to find from Grand Central Station...the lights were great...the security was respectable....everything was absolutely fantastic.

  • At $29 its an absolute bargain

by NotTakenID on 11/30/09Nokia Theatre Times Square - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

Great music, great people, it was a great memory. Normally I wouldn't bother writing a review but I think this band really deserves more fans then they have. They do an amazing job of recreating all the good feelings of the Grateful Dead in a setting that is still intimate.

  • DSO Nokia Theatre - 11/28/09

by njtopher on 11/30/09Nokia Theatre Times Square - New YorkRating: 3 out of 5

The show by DSO was energetic and well played, 1988 was not the best year for the Dead, in my oprinion, but this re-creation of 7/15/88 was fun. However, I found the Nokia Theatre to be a strange place... the room had three tiers, with plenty of space open for dancing, but the sight lines were terrible. Maybe that is why they have video monitors in the theatre. Also, I was put off by the number of people for whom the band seemed like a backdrop, and many were involved in cocktail party-like conversations within small groups. I am all for socializing with friends in the right setting, but it was odd to see so many "fans" not paying attention to the band or the music.
