Dark Star Orchestra on Tour

More than just a tribute band, the seven members of the Dark Star Orchestra are dedicated to the Grateful Dead live experience, best known for playing full setlists picked from their 2,000+ concerts. The Grateful Dead's live show is legendary, a catalog of improvisation traded and celebrated across decades. The Dark Star Orchestra re-creates the Dead's intra-band interplay and pastoral guitar soloing. Remarkably devoted and true to the source material, DSO tailors their arrangements, gear and tempos to the era of the evening. Some nights find the DSO creating original setlists, playing sets from the Jerry Garcia Band or even jamming with members of the Dead themselves.

Dark Star Orchestra in Concert

Formed in Chicago in 1997, Dark Star Orchestra provides generations of fans with the chance to experience entire Grateful Dead sets, song by song. Named after "Dark Star," a part of the Dead's set known for exploratory jams, DSO rose to national prominence in 1998 when Mike Gordon and John Fishman of Phish joined them for a performance of the Dead's 1983 Halloween show. DSO promptly became a touring sensation: At 2,800 shows and counting, DSO have played more shows than the Grateful Dead themselves. They ultimately enlisted keyboardist Rob Barraco of Phil Lesh and Friends, the Other Ones and the 2003 touring version of the Dead. The DSO have played Bonnaroo and Milwaukee's SummerFest, and they've been hosting their own annual fests for years - the Dark Star Jubilee in Ohio and the Jam in the Sand in Jamaica. Perhaps the most important honor for DSO, though, is enlisting actual members of the Grateful Dead, having performed on stage accompanied by Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Bill Kreutzmann, Donna Jean Godchaux, Vince Welnick and Tom Constanten. A 2018 show even found guitarist Jeff Mattson playing Jerry Garcia's custom-made guitar, "Wolf," which the Dead founder used for two decades.

  • DSO HOB HOUSTON TX

by kris66 on 3/6/10House of Blues Houston - HoustonRating: 5 out of 5

Nice to see them swing through Houston again bringing Jeff Matson in the Garcia role. Interesting Terrapin opener into Let it Grow on to Cold Rain and Snow.. The sound was good overall, however, the bass took over the entire room and distorted when really pushed. There was a reasonable turnout for a Thursday night. It took me a while to get accustomed to the mix and subtle differences in styles and vocal tones. Rob was very strong vocally most notably on some of the complex Dylan material such as Queen Jane Approximately, Lost Sailor, Lazy Lightning, Samson and Delilah, Sugar Magnolia w/2nd set Sunshine Daydream closer. Could use a little more Leslie volume when deploying the Hammond. It was nice hearing some of the older material and typical JGB songs like Cats Down Under The Stars and Tangled up in Blue especially with Lisa. Darkstar Orchestra creates their own history and legacy as each year passes and provide an awesome opportunity to be exposed to the music of the original Grateful Dead in a live setting for those who missed out andthose who can never get enough.

  • The New Guy Rocks!

by ststephen on 2/15/10House of Blues Cleveland - ClevelandRating: 5 out of 5

Jeff contributes very creative lead guitar, fully engaged with the material, and not afraid to refer to sheet music to keep on track while running through a lyrically challenging song (the Touch of Grey encore). This was a rockin', get-up-and-dance workout of a show.

  • One More Saturday Night

by DrFritz on 2/14/10Newport Music Hall - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

The place was cold (when we got there). There was no coat check. The upstairs was locked (until the second set). It's a beautiful place. We traveled from Cleveland because Newport is nicer than Cleveland H.O.B. The band is great with the new Jerry. A better jammin' Jerry, I guess. But the old, original Jerry was great and will be missed. The rest of the band stepped up, not that they ever didn't. When they opened the upstairs, there were people everywhere, and the karma bounced to the ceiling (or was that the big yellow ball?). And it got warmer. Definitely got warmer.

  • Dark Star is even better

by gratefuljoe on 2/14/10Newport Music Hall - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

Awesome sound - more energy and fantastic guitar playing! So glad to see that they are not just the same fantastic band but even better with vocals that match Jerry's sound and guitar style --- can see that the whole band has stepped-up playing to make this truly a fantastic experience!

  • great show

    by den14fun on 2/12/10The Pageant - St LouisRating: 5 out of 5

I think time has come to stop going to shows in Saint Louis. I'm tired of fans talking during shows, walking and then dancing in front of me and my group of friends when they know we have been there the entire show. The kids here are just plain rude and ill mannered. The music was great. I may be mistaken but the new lead looks alot like a guy who played with Donna and the Zen Tricksters. The jams were hot and tight especially during Lazy Lightening and Supplication during the first set.

Excellent show. I have never before seen DSO, but I am now a big fan. Highlight songs for me included Cassidy, Jack Straw, Estimated Prophet, and Eyes of the World. I expect to see them again next time they come to town.

  • DSO Tore it up

by tealoki on 2/5/10Varsity Theater - MinneapolisRating: 5 out of 5

It was an amazing night, an amazing show and the band was in top form. Jeff Mattson is an amazing guitarist... he fit the mix quite well. The show they picked was perfect and for the first show of the tour with a new guitar player was spot on!! HIGHly recommended.

  • DSO rocked Varsity

by RosevilleRocker on 2/5/10Varsity Theater - MinneapolisRating: 4 out of 5

DSO rocked it last night. Their new "Jerry" fit in seamlessly. The show was an exact re-creation of the Dead’s April 24, 1972 show at the Rheinhalle in Dusseldorf: This was my first DSO show but I saw the Dead play many times back in the day. Unlike some robotic cover bands (Aussie Pink Floyd) these guys jam with feeling and manage to bring back the authentic GD magic. Highly recommended.

  • DSO - Varsity Theater

    by DC2COMarty on 2/4/10Varsity Theater - MinneapolisRating: 4 out of 5

Fabulous entertainment as is the norm - although Lisa singin a good bluzey tune exceeds that in m h opinion. Really enjoyed the venue, accept how many show-lovin fools fell all over the floor risers?! I felt lucky to stay upright all nite! John is off doing Further, but Jeff is just an unbelievable Jerry; in play and appearance, he's like a doppelganger who's alive and well. Sounded fantastic. Rob - great drummin, especially in music typically enhanced w/ two guys doing the beats. Rob B - beautiful music. Rob's amps appeared to be acting up at one point, but I never heard any problem with the output as he played... simply marvelous. Kevin kickin the energy high, especially at wrap-ups, and makin' a variety of facial expressions throughout the evening!

  • Bad Vocals

    by scotty1234 on 2/4/10Varsity Theater - MinneapolisRating: 1 out of 5

I was disappointed. After seeing them two years ago at the Zoo I could hardly wait to see them again. The music was fine but the vocals were very very weak!!!! I could hear the crowd sing the words better than the group. I almost thought the mixing was bad but it was never corrected. I left after the first set.

great energy; new guitarist was good ; crowd really into it

  • DSO opening show of the tour - GREAT!

by Dhaivyd on 2/4/10Varsity Theater - MinneapolisRating: 5 out of 5

Jeff Matson did a great job on the Jerry parts. Though you can't expect anyone to pull off the guitar pyrotechnics of Jerry, he did a great job. He even looks a lot like Jerry. The keyboardist has a very positive energy. Tight vocal parts all around. Mesmerizing light show. They re-enacted the show from Dusseldorf, Germany, on April 24, 1972, but added Ripple at the end and seemed to insert some non-Dead song somewhere in there, too. Kind of a slow set list, but that seemed to work for the crowd.
