Dallas Mavericks History

The Mavericks joined the NBA as an expansion franchise in the 1980–81 season, becoming the league’s third team in Texas, joining the San Antonio Spurs and Houston Rockets. The Mavericks struggled in their inaugural season, but quickly improved with Mark Aguirre, who became the franchise's first All-Star and took the team to their first playoff series in the 1983–84 season. The Mavericks went on to qualify for the playoffs for four more consecutive seasons, culminating in a trip to the Western Conference Finals in 1987–88. They came within one win of the NBA Finals, losing to the Lakers in seven games.

Dallas struggled throughout the '90s, but a new era began when the Mavericks acquired Dirk Nowitzki in 1998. Ownership of the team was sold to Mark Cuban in January of 2000. Cuban immediately began to revitalize the franchise, building around a central trio of Nowitzki, point guard Steve Nash and wing Michael Finley. In Cuban's inaugural year owning the Mavericks, they made the playoffs for the first time in 11 years. This began a streak in which they qualified for the playoffs for 12 consecutive seasons. In the 2011 NBA Finals, they defeated the HEAT in six games to win the only championship in franchise history.

Nowitzki retired in 2019 and passed the torch to Luka Dončić, who led the Mavericks to four straight playoff berths, including the 2022 Western Conference Finals and 2024 NBA Finals.

  • Disappointed

by Tanya on 4/10/23American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 1 out of 5

I did not like I paid over $200 and did not see star players on roster play in game.

  • We had fun, atmosphere was great, Mavs played badly and lost

    by H. C. on 3/28/23American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 3 out of 5

The crowd was enthusiastic, the entertainment was great, the Hispanic Heritage theme night was fun, concession lines not too long, everything was great except the game. The Mavericks played poorly on defense , didn't hustle enough and they lost to a lesser team (Hornets). For the high price we pay for these tickets, the fans deserve to see the home team paly hard and do their best.

  • First Game, Best Game

by Micaela on 3/10/23American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

From the beginning of us purchasing tickets to walking out of the door- every staff member was friendly and super helpful. It was difficult finding accessible tickets for certain games, we called and spoke to Ernest, and he helped us find the best tickets in our price range. My husband found the app to be super helpful. I loved the energy every staff member brought to the arena. I was so shocked to see how fast the arena emptied, and traffic flowed perfectly. The only hiccup we encountered was the accessible bathroom stalls and the lines and trying to be respectful to other patrons. But we managed, and it will not keep us from returning. Hubby will need to just use his horn more. Thank you.

  • It was great. Except the seats are tight.

by Dune on 3/10/23American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 3 out of 5

It went well. The seat kind of small of what i would like, but it was worth the price i paid for.

  • Awesome Experience!

by HM on 3/3/23American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

First time going to a NBA game and it was great! easy process with the electronic tickets, food in the stadium was very affordable, had some tenders with fries bottomless pop corn and soda, not expensive at all, there are many options with all the different restaurants inside the arena. would strongly recomend to get you tickets right from ticketmaster so you can avoid any issues.

  • Dallas Mav's High End

by JG on 1/7/23American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

  • Amazing

by Jo on 1/1/23American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

It was amazing!!! Our first time there, hope we repeat.

  • The parking ticket didn’t show location or have instructions

by TomFlight on 1/1/23American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 2 out of 5

The parking ticket on the app did not give me a location or instructions of where to park. It just said ParkWhiz. When I went on the website it said just “having problems connecting to this page.” I had no clue where I was allowed to park. I tried multiple parking lots and eventually found one which said they accepted ParkWhiz but even they were confused. Very frustrating when you don’t know where you are allowed/supposed to park. I think this is unacceptable.

  • Great game!

by Huskergal on 12/30/22American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

The Mavericks put on a great show! The music and hype was awesome. The only real complaint was the seats are very tight and not very comfortable.

  • Better than I expected

by Kean on 12/28/22American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

  • Fantastic Day

by LadyT on 12/28/22American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

The seating was perfect and thanks to the Christmas special we were able to purchase the tickets at a very reasonable price! This was the second best way (worshipping together at church being the first) that our family spent time together enjoying Christmas. We enjoyed the spirit and comradery of the fans and what better way to seal the day than with the Mavericks winning!! So glad we decided to make attending the game a part of our plans for spending time together!
