Dallas Mavericks History

The Mavericks joined the NBA as an expansion franchise in the 1980–81 season, becoming the league’s third team in Texas, joining the San Antonio Spurs and Houston Rockets. The Mavericks struggled in their inaugural season, but quickly improved with Mark Aguirre, who became the franchise's first All-Star and took the team to their first playoff series in the 1983–84 season. The Mavericks went on to qualify for the playoffs for four more consecutive seasons, culminating in a trip to the Western Conference Finals in 1987–88. They came within one win of the NBA Finals, losing to the Lakers in seven games.

Dallas struggled throughout the '90s, but a new era began when the Mavericks acquired Dirk Nowitzki in 1998. Ownership of the team was sold to Mark Cuban in January of 2000. Cuban immediately began to revitalize the franchise, building around a central trio of Nowitzki, point guard Steve Nash and wing Michael Finley. In Cuban's inaugural year owning the Mavericks, they made the playoffs for the first time in 11 years. This began a streak in which they qualified for the playoffs for 12 consecutive seasons. In the 2011 NBA Finals, they defeated the HEAT in six games to win the only championship in franchise history.

Nowitzki retired in 2019 and passed the torch to Luka Dončić, who led the Mavericks to four straight playoff berths, including the 2022 Western Conference Finals and 2024 NBA Finals.

  • Game was great BUT!!!!

If you have the extra bucks to buy a better seat . Spend the money to maximize your experience. The 300's was too tight I'm 6'2 and my legs were killing me the whole time. No elbow room no excuse me let me go to the restroom space to walk by without making the whole row get up. Been to plenty of mav games and this was the first time up there and the LAST

  • Mavericks Game Was AMAZING!!

    by Justice77 on 1/6/18American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

I am a Golden State Warrior fan that attended the game Jan. 3, with my son. We both had a time we will NEVER forget. The Mavericks mascot made SEVERAL visits to our seats to mess around with us, interacting with the crowd. We felt like we were part of the show, we almost forgot we were at a game! Bottom line, an AMAZING experience and we will most DEFINITELY be returning!

Great game atmosphere. Great view of game and what a great game it was. 125-122 Final with Golden State pulling out a win with 3 pointer in the last 5 seconds.

  • Mavs game was a blast!

    by Rachel0709 on 12/23/17American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

I took my 10 year old daughter who had been bugging me for months to take her to a game, but I was reluctant to get “nosebleed” seats which as a single mom it’s all I could afford. I finally gave in, and we had the best time! Even when you sit up high you have a good view of the action. I highly recommend the more affordable seats! The Mavs played a great game and we had a fantastic night.

I had a great time at the Mavericks game on my vacation. It was my first time going to a Mavs game and I got to see Dirk play for in person for the first time ever. I had good seats so I did not miss anything on the court. It was a great experience for me and I plan to be back in the future.

  • Dirk was on Fire!!!!!

    by Luno806 on 11/28/17American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

Its always a great experience....win or lose in this case it was a win....it was a great time and it's something I don't get to do on all the time. I can not express enough how awesome it is to see your favorite players up close and watch them live. It is a must go if you haven't yet.

  • Celtics win 16th in a row

by CaneMaximus on 11/23/17American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 3 out of 5

The game was great. Mavs fought hard however the AA seats were too close to each other (poor leg room) and at an odd angle. Toyota Center (Rockets) & AT&T Center (Spurs) are more comfortable.

  • Great Night with The MAVS

Really fun to attend the Mavs game. This is a very nice facility. It's easy to access by DART, which makes it convenient for a person who is from out of town.
