Dallas Mavericks History

The Mavericks joined the NBA as an expansion franchise in the 1980–81 season, becoming the league’s third team in Texas, joining the San Antonio Spurs and Houston Rockets. The Mavericks struggled in their inaugural season, but quickly improved with Mark Aguirre, who became the franchise's first All-Star and took the team to their first playoff series in the 1983–84 season. The Mavericks went on to qualify for the playoffs for four more consecutive seasons, culminating in a trip to the Western Conference Finals in 1987–88. They came within one win of the NBA Finals, losing to the Lakers in seven games.

Dallas struggled throughout the '90s, but a new era began when the Mavericks acquired Dirk Nowitzki in 1998. Ownership of the team was sold to Mark Cuban in January of 2000. Cuban immediately began to revitalize the franchise, building around a central trio of Nowitzki, point guard Steve Nash and wing Michael Finley. In Cuban's inaugural year owning the Mavericks, they made the playoffs for the first time in 11 years. This began a streak in which they qualified for the playoffs for 12 consecutive seasons. In the 2011 NBA Finals, they defeated the HEAT in six games to win the only championship in franchise history.

Nowitzki retired in 2019 and passed the torch to Luka Dončić, who led the Mavericks to four straight playoff berths, including the 2022 Western Conference Finals and 2024 NBA Finals.

American Airlines Center(Opens in new tab) (also known as "the AAC") has been the home of the Dallas Mavericks since it opened in 2001. The Mavs share the arena with the Dallas Stars of the NHL.     The March 11 Rockets Vs. Mavericks in Dallas was a good game and nice experience. The employees were very helpful and we got to our seats quickly in section 312. The food was fine and we did not have to wait too long in line. Overall my family and I had a great time and the Rockets won! Getting to the Silver parking garage was a bit of a head ache and I would park further away next time. We just missed the start of the game because of the slow traffic while getting to the Silver lot. I thought the police did a great job with the traffic and leaving the Silver lot was not much of an issue.

    So when we get to our seats there are these Go Mav's Signs which seem harmless. What we didn't know is that the fold up and become noise makers. So for the entire game we have to listen to these noise makers making a loud snapping sound all around us. Gave my wife and son a headache. Ruined the experience at such a great Arena.

    My daughter and I had such a great time we are going back at the end of the month! There really are no bad seats in the American Airlines Center! We lost the game but great day out!!

    Clean, fun venue. Great seats even at highest level. I was unprepared for the outrageous food prices and lack of heathier options. $11 beers?!! Even shrimp was fried. Quality of food was fine but makes for a very expensive family outing.

    My first time in dallas and at the AAC! Great seats in sec 113 saw all the action! Close to everything, clean, just an overall good time minus the lady who knocked over my beer but still had a great time, game went into ot!
