Dallas Mavericks History

The Mavericks joined the NBA as an expansion franchise in the 1980–81 season, becoming the league’s third team in Texas, joining the San Antonio Spurs and Houston Rockets. The Mavericks struggled in their inaugural season, but quickly improved with Mark Aguirre, who became the franchise's first All-Star and took the team to their first playoff series in the 1983–84 season. The Mavericks went on to qualify for the playoffs for four more consecutive seasons, culminating in a trip to the Western Conference Finals in 1987–88. They came within one win of the NBA Finals, losing to the Lakers in seven games.

Dallas struggled throughout the '90s, but a new era began when the Mavericks acquired Dirk Nowitzki in 1998. Ownership of the team was sold to Mark Cuban in January of 2000. Cuban immediately began to revitalize the franchise, building around a central trio of Nowitzki, point guard Steve Nash and wing Michael Finley. In Cuban's inaugural year owning the Mavericks, they made the playoffs for the first time in 11 years. This began a streak in which they qualified for the playoffs for 12 consecutive seasons. In the 2011 NBA Finals, they defeated the HEAT in six games to win the only championship in franchise history.

Nowitzki retired in 2019 and passed the torch to Luka Dončić, who led the Mavericks to four straight playoff berths, including the 2022 Western Conference Finals and 2024 NBA Finals.

  • Parking terrible

by Visiting on 4/1/22American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 3 out of 5

Despite being an hour early to the event we missed the entire first quarter. We spend that time in the parking area in and around the stadium. The parking was awful. The traffic support was terrible

  • Floor seats for lifelong memory with our nephews

    by Greg t 86 on 3/30/22American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

We wanted to create a lifelong memory with our nephews who play on their HS BB team. Mavs vs. Jazz, floor seats. Just the ticket. Luka hitting a a halftime buzzer beater while our godson video’d it, watching Cuban meet and greet everyone. 12 point win during the playoff chase. We got the memory we wanted!

  • Fantastic evening!

by Sarah on 3/12/22American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

I bought “Black Friday” seats as a Christmas gift to my husband and son-in-law and they couldn’t have been more pleased. I never knew you could buy Maverick’s tickets during Black Friday (which was more than just one day). Being able to transfer tickets to the others in my group was convenient and the email updates/reminders were great. I’ll be buying seats again next year!

  • Great

    by Moodyfamily55 on 3/10/22American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

We took our son for his Christmas gift to see the mavs be Golden state. We had an amazing time. I felt the concessions were very affordable. Ticket prices were expensive but we knew that which is why it was his Christmas gift. We were headed home talking about how we can’t wait to go again!

  • A SAC of meh

by Daddy Bob on 3/7/22American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 3 out of 5

Map of arena on ticketmaster made it look like I was on the first row sec 301. Actually row A was the sixth row behind rows AA-EE. That’s misleading at best. Scanner had problems validating my ticket in Apple wallet. Think I’ll have it mailed in the future. Halftime dunk show was great! Mavericks without Luka gave a good effort and came back to win it! Final fiasco - tried to buy a drink with cash, they wouldn’t take my money. Salesperson was nice enough to give me a soft drink, but why on earth not take my money? I don’t bring my credit cards for security reasons. This has not been a problem in the past.

It was my birthday, and it was displayed on the big screen, and verbally announced; i only wish i could see luca play, therefore i have to come back. Parking was good, the food was good. I would like to sit close to mavs bench nxt time, and hopefully get luca autograph, and dirk, if he's there. Thanks for the experience,i was able to share the experience with one of my sons, and a church member also. Looking to come back soon. Thanks for the memories.it made my birthday memorable...larone

  • Good Experience

    by K. C. on 3/7/22American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

Easy access, friendly customer service, my son and I had good time and enjoyed the atmosphere of the game. The only thing he was looking forward and we could not do was getting an autograph of his favorite player (we went to the game as part of his birthday celebration) and got to the arena two hours early, to see Luca, and we could not get close to the court. But that did not stop us to have a great time and everyone (staff) was super nice. Looking forward to go again. GO MAVS!
