Dallas Mavericks History

The Mavericks joined the NBA as an expansion franchise in the 1980–81 season, becoming the league’s third team in Texas, joining the San Antonio Spurs and Houston Rockets. The Mavericks struggled in their inaugural season, but quickly improved.

Their win totals increased in each of their first four seasons. Led by Mark Aguirre, who became the franchise's first All-Star, they reached the playoffs for the first time in the 1983–84 season. The Mavericks went on to qualify for the playoffs for five consecutive seasons, culminating in a trip to the Western Conference Finals in 1987–88. They came within one win of the NBA Finals, losing to the Lakers in seven games.

Dallas struggled throughout the '90s, but a new era began when the Mavericks acquired Dirk Nowitzki in 1998. Ownership of the team was sold to Mark Cuban in January of 2000. Cuban immediately began to revitalize the franchise, building around a central trio of Nowitzki, point guard Steve Nash and wing Michael Finley. In Cuban's inaugural year owning the Mavericks, they made the playoffs for the first time in 11 years. This began a streak in which they qualified for the playoffs for 12 consecutive seasons. In the 2011 NBA Finals, they defeated the Miami HEAT in six games to win the only championship in franchise history.

Nowitzki retired in 2019 and passed the torch to Luka Dončić, who led the Mavericks to three straight playoff berths, including the 2022 Western Conference Finals.

    Amazing experience!

by Veronica Villarreal on 4/8/24American Airlines Center - Dallas

As we entered the American Airlines Center the experience began wonderfully. The music, the advertisements all lighting up around, and the people just made it a hit. We walked in, check in was a breeze. Right when we entered we got Pizza Hut, beer, and some bomb brisket nachos. We then were right by our seating area which took 5 minutes to get to. We will be sitting courtside again. My son also got to speak to Steph curry and Chris Paul. What a great overall night! Anything to see my son smile

    Enjoyable Experience

by Chips10 on 3/11/24American Airlines Center - Dallas

Other than the rain (which neither Ticketmaster nor the Dallas Mavericks can control), the venue and the game were very enjoyable. Went with my two daughters and were able to watch the game and get excited about cheering for the Mavericks. To top it off, the Mavericks won! The American Airlines Center is awesome and even from the 300 level, our view of the game was great. Will definitely go again.

    Amazing experience

by Pef on 2/18/24American Airlines Center - Dallas

Was my first time experience of a nba game and it was an absolute mindblow. Everything was set up for a great night. If I had to say something special, as an European, I would have liked that players stay longer on the field at the end. We often have the chance to see players thank warmly spectators.

    Really great!

by Brett W. on 1/30/24American Airlines Center - Dallas

The experience was excellent! One thing I really liked was they have mics embedded into the rims to pick up vibrations that would broadcast over the PA so those of us in the 300s could have some more "texture"to the experience whenever someone went for a dunk, or made a basket, or made contact with the rim. Just note that they don't allow those with an upper bowl ticket into the lower bowl for warmups. They were much nicer about it than other places have been on the sort, however.

    very good

by Genevieve on 1/30/24American Airlines Center - Dallas

I liked the game. The people were buzzing and worried about their team

    Too far from the action.

by Cowboy on 1/17/24American Airlines Center - Dallas

The arena is poorly designed. Too many lower level seats which creates fans being too far from the floor at the back of the Lower level and in the upper levels.

    Thoroughly enjoyable

by Wendy on 1/14/24American Airlines Center - Dallas

Extremely friendly and professional staff from the moment of walking through the door. Platinum level ticket Seating gave us access to uncrowded hallways, product taste testing and a beautiful, comfortable restaurant setting. Game breakers dancing and music and half time entertainment added to the enjoyment. Announcer kept up with the game action. And parking directly across the street made for easy in/out and very short walk.

The experience of a Mav game is great - but the team can be considered the Cowboys of Basketball following the game against the Cavaliers!!

    NBA Basketball

by Mavericks on 12/26/23American Airlines Center - Dallas

Luka Doncic of the Dallas Mavericks has been incredibly exciting to watch. His skills and basketball IQ are beyond his years. It will indeed be thrilling to see him team up with Kyrie Irving when he returns from injury. Both players bring a unique style of play to the game, and their chemistry on the court will certainly make for an amazing season. The NBA is always full of surprises, and this duo has the potential to create some memorable moments.
