Dallas Mavericks History

The Mavericks joined the NBA as an expansion franchise in the 1980–81 season, becoming the league’s third team in Texas, joining the San Antonio Spurs and Houston Rockets. The Mavericks struggled in their inaugural season, but quickly improved with Mark Aguirre, who became the franchise's first All-Star and took the team to their first playoff series in the 1983–84 season. The Mavericks went on to qualify for the playoffs for four more consecutive seasons, culminating in a trip to the Western Conference Finals in 1987–88. They came within one win of the NBA Finals, losing to the Lakers in seven games.

Dallas struggled throughout the '90s, but a new era began when the Mavericks acquired Dirk Nowitzki in 1998. Ownership of the team was sold to Mark Cuban in January of 2000. Cuban immediately began to revitalize the franchise, building around a central trio of Nowitzki, point guard Steve Nash and wing Michael Finley. In Cuban's inaugural year owning the Mavericks, they made the playoffs for the first time in 11 years. This began a streak in which they qualified for the playoffs for 12 consecutive seasons. In the 2011 NBA Finals, they defeated the HEAT in six games to win the only championship in franchise history.

Nowitzki retired in 2019 and passed the torch to Luka Dončić, who led the Mavericks to four straight playoff berths, including the 2022 Western Conference Finals and 2024 NBA Finals.

The American Airlines Arena experience was great! I was actually rooting for the opposing team (Go Knicks!), but the concessions, seats, and atmosphere in the arena helped make it a great experience.

Amazing experience from start to finish, did not want to leave even better the Mavs won.... 100% need to do it again, the ease of buying tickets and then the match it's self will live in my memory for a long time, The NBA know how to put in a show.

I like the experience there, but still don't want Nico to make that decision.

  • Just ok

by Dee on 10/9/25Dickies Arena - Fort WorthRating: 3 out of 5

Game was okay, venue nice. You could tell 1st preseason game, fans and players not into it at beginning. But regular season individual game tickets are too expensive, so this is all I could afford.
