D.C. United History

D.C. United dominated the early days of MLS. They appeared in the league’s first four championship games, winning three of them, and added a fourth title in 2004, all before the league was even a decade old. They were dominant under the leadership of their first coach, Bruce Arena, from 1996 until 1998. He won 56 percent of his games in D.C., by far the best mark of any coach in team history.

Between 1997 and 2007, the United earned four Supporters’ Shields for best regular season record and claimed three U.S. Open Cup trophies in 1996, 2008 and 2013. The team’s alumni include a league-best four MVP recipients: Marco Etcheverry in 1998, Christian Gomez in 2006, Luciano Emilio in 2007 and Dwayne De Rosario in 2011. D.C. entered a new era with the arrival of English star Wayne Rooney in 2018. United's 2018 debut season in Audi Field was a success thanks in large part to Rooney.

A great game on a warm afternoon

by Belgaboy on 10/19/16RFK Stadium - Washington

DC United's first half was arguably the best of the season. The team outclassed NYFC and played very well collectively. Acosta proved once more to be an outstanding play-maker with superior technical abilities. He made all the difference in midfield. The team slowed down in the second half but never looked like it was going to let the victory slip away. DC United is now play off-bound and given the quality of this afternoon's performance, it can legitimately have high hopes for the rest of the competition. Only the Red Bulls seem to be a better team in the East right now, but not by much.

    great game

    by clkva1 on 10/19/16RFK Stadium - Washington

Fun game; happy of course that DCU won. Watching a friend on the team makes it special too. And I'm kind of glad they haven't upgraded the stadium as that's probably helping keep ticket prices lower. Always a good thing. Good food at the concession stands too.

    Good Game, but Mediocre Service

by BTWily on 10/19/16RFK Stadium - Washington

Went to this game with my father. I was frustrated first by the pace with which the security staff worked. I do not begrudge their presence; I completely agree they need to be there, -!: I'm thankful they are. However, the staff in our line seemed more focused on socializing amongst themselves then moving people through the lines and into the park. After that, I headed into the park, and we wanted to get some food. After waiting in two different lines, we got to the front of the line only to find find that the stand did not have the food we wanted due to the fact that their fryers were broken. This happened at two different stands, but the staff at the stand did not make an attempt to put up signs along the lines to let people know. We wasted a lot of time standing in line, and we missed the first 15mins of the game. Overall, it was a nice day out, but the food service left something to be desired.

    Interesting Experience!

    by Deckie67 on 10/2/16RFK Stadium - Washington

I have attended many football matches across Europe over the years, but this was my first football match in the US - or soccer game - as the Americans call it. It was all razzamatazz from the start. The parachute drop, the ceremonial kick off, the half time entertainment and so on. One thing that surprised me was that a large portion of the fans seemed to have no interest in the actual match. Many arrived in half way through the first half, but still had plenty of time to buy enormous quantities of match food before taking their seats. Others seemed to be more interested in waving to their friends and seeing who was there. And then they left before the end of the match! At times there seemed to be as many out in the food vending areas as in watching the game. However it was a very interesting & enjoyable experience and felt extremely safe, with no tension at all

    DC United is a miss

by Anonymous on 9/29/16RFK Stadium - Washington

Stadium is poor, but I believe they are building a new one, food was awful, lots of staff wandering around looking as if they dont know what to do, stood at a gate after asking if we were at the right one just to be held up for 25 mins until the home support got in then advised to go to another gate to get in quicker? Excessive amount of staff walking around in view of game, lots of supporters walking around meeting friends like they were at a mall, also in view of the game, not a great promotion for soccer, sorry.

    DC United

by Kcdonya on 9/27/16RFK Stadium - Washington

This game was awesome, but RFK sucks. No real food vendors either. The DC United players deserve to play in an awesome arena. The seats were good and the game was an exciting experience.

    Great match!

    by DCUfan25 on 9/27/16RFK Stadium - Washington

The match itself was fantastic, winning 4-1 to get above the red line. The seats were super close to the field with players walking by from the opposing team. Hard to see what was going on at the other end of the field, but the action on the near side was great. I do not suggest these sits if you have kids though. Since it is so close the field, the view is blocked by the people in the one row in front of you. When they stood up, the kids could not see. Would have been good to know there are a lot of photographers that stand on the end line blocking the view. It's also annoying when security has a group meeting right in front of you.

    Six goals on Saturday night

by Belgaboy on 8/30/16RFK Stadium - Washington

The game was fun and exciting, due mainly to a high-scoring performance by DC United. Acosta proved to be the real play-maker that the team was looking for. The red card given to a Chicago player obviously destabilized the visitor's collective organization. The momentum is now on DC United side for the end of the season and hopefully the play-offs.

    A rainy day at RFK

by Belgaboy on 8/24/16RFK Stadium - Washington

The game was interrupted for more than one hour due to a summer rain storm. The playing conditions were therefore not optimal. Nevertheless, both teams delivered a strong performance, especially in the second half. DC United managed a come back from two goals down in just a few minutes. The team looks better than earlier in the regular season, with more passing accuracy in the midfield and more speed and striking power upfront. If they continue this positive trend, they should clinch a play-off spot.

    Well Done

by DBDJR on 8/24/16RFK Stadium - Washington

A significant delay in the match due to storms was handled very well by management. Hope new stadium will be able to accommodate such a problem. RFK excess space is huge so it was easy.

    SKC Fan Visiting the Area

    by CB87 on 8/16/16RFK Stadium - Washington

I was in the area visiting a friend and thought this would be fun. Overall it was fun. The stadium and vendor options need work. A fun way to enjoy DC sports.

It was a fantastic night on the town. DC United puts on a great show and the game was intense.

I would recommend a soccer game to friends but not at RFK! The stadium looks like it may fall down at any minute, when I sat down in my seat I thought for sure it would break. A coat of paint over EVERYTHING would go a long way what a dump! The game over all was great and the halftime was cute though.

    DC v Philly

by SteveSh on 8/9/16RFK Stadium - Washington

My first game of 'proper' football in America. By no means the English Premier League, but an enjoyable experience. Disappointing crowd, and most fans seemed fairly oblivious about what was going on until someone actually scored. 2-2 was probably about right on the night. If I was DC Manager i'd have been asking (in the dressing room obvs) why they couldn't play at the tempo of the last 10 minutes for longer; especially when they went behind.

    What a Game!!

by joelisacoolkid on 8/9/16RFK Stadium - Washington

So this was my first D.C. United experience. I recently moved and my family came to visit so I decided to take them to the game. I love that people call to make sure you are ready for the game and also follow up with you to see if you enjoyed your experience. The stadium wasn't crazy packed and there was no traffic leading into the game. The game itself was AMAZING!! We ended up tieing in the last 5 extra minutes! The atmosphere of the fans is awesome as well. If you have yet to experience a game, you must!

    Nice to see Didier Drogba

by Gazdouk on 8/3/16RFK Stadium - Washington

The seats were near the field so you had a close look to the players but too many angles were obstructed by the security staff so when they were some action plays near our side of the field by the goalie we could not see anything and the security team would not move. Hopefully the new stadium will be better designed.

First time at a game, more to come!

by thefaceofbeau on 6/4/16RFK Stadium - Washington

This was my first time at a DC United game; I brought my boyfriend along 'cause it was going to be his first time too, and we really enjoyed the game! Definitely planning on coming to more games in the future! It's a fun way to spend a weekday evening

    Great Game

by GrumpySentinel on 5/17/16RFK Stadium - Washington

The game was great. No issues with the two teams or seeing anything. The seat location was great, but three of the four seats were broken and the front edge dipped forward on all three making them uncomfortable.
